Greensborough Historical Society Victoria

The European settlement of Greensborough was from 1839 onward. The Society's aim is to collect, catalogue and preserve the history and heritage of Greensborough and its environs from the earliest records to the present time. Whilst called Greensborough Historical Society, its coverage is not limited to that area alone and includes Greensborough, Watsonia, Macleod, Montmorency, Briar Hill, Lower Plenty and Bundoora.

The Greensborough Historical Society Inc collection focuses on historical and current information relating to Greensborough and surrounding areas, including the former Shire of Diamond Valley. Information is from mid-1840 to the current time. Items include artifacts, photographs, documents, oral histories, maps, school yearbooks and uniforms, books and collected current newspaperr clippings relevant to the area. There is a large digital collection of photographs.

Significance

The collection has historical significance in that it brings together information relating to the settlement of Greensborough and district from the mid 1840s. The Greensborough Historical Society Inc was formed in 2010 to collect, preserve and catalogue the history and heritage of the area from earliest records.

Historical information

Bundoora Primary School No.1915 was constructed in 1877 of brick on a bluestone base with an iron roof and small porch. The school consisted of a single room with the dimensions 30 feet by 18 feet. It was a small rural school and in use for over 100 years. Today it sits abandoned at the intersection of Plenty Road and the Metropolitan Ring Road. Hammer Pliers used for removing horse-shoe nails. Found along Plenty River in Lower Plenty. Commonly advertised and available during the century spanning 1845-1945.

The Grave of Jemima Fielding (died 24/03/1926), St Helena Cemetery.

Significance

St Helena Cemetery was originally the burial place of the Beale family and friends. The first burials took place in the 1850s. There are now over 200 burials.

This collection of knitting books date from 1947 to the late 1970s and were donated by Helen Bryant. Titles: Patons knitting book no 570, Patons knitting book no 209, Olive Ketel's exclusive knitwear for young folk (1947),Patons Woolcraft, Paragon knitting book number 70.

Significance

These knitting books are from a time when knitting was a favourite pastime and an essential method of clothing the family.

Historical information

In 2013, Gary Partington generously donated farm implements to Greensborough Historical Society. These implements had been used at the family property "Willis Vale" up to the 1960s. Members of the Partington family farmed the area from the 1840s. In this photo, Elinor, Gary and Faye stand behind the plaque that explained the provenance of the displayed implements. Unfortunately, one of these items was stolen in December 2016. More photos of this event can be found at the GHS Resource Centre.

Janefield Precinct: Basalt rubble. The remains of this site are between Greensborough and Janefield. A RAAF Hygiene Training Camp was located on the Plenty River, just south of the Janefield community. It was in use from 1944 to 1946. The Camp was constructed from salvaged materials. Instruction included building and maintenance of grease traps, latrines, elementary plumbing and carpentry.

Historical information

Details some versions of the history of the 'Batman Apple Tree'. Also the condition and lack of maintenance of the tree in 2002. Highlights Nillumbik Shire's ignorance of the existence of the tree; which is within one kilometre of the Nillumbik Shire Offices.

Significance

It is possibly the oldest European planted tree in Victoria. It was planted as a young tree in 1841.
