Greensborough Historical Society Victoria

The European settlement of Greensborough was from 1839 onward. The Society's aim is to collect, catalogue and preserve the history and heritage of Greensborough and its environs from the earliest records to the present time. Whilst called Greensborough Historical Society, its coverage is not limited to that area alone and includes Greensborough, Watsonia, Macleod, Montmorency, Briar Hill, Lower Plenty and Bundoora.

The Greensborough Historical Society Inc collection focuses on historical and current information relating to Greensborough and surrounding areas, including the former Shire of Diamond Valley. Information is from mid-1840 to the current time. Items include artifacts, photographs, documents, oral histories, maps, school yearbooks and uniforms, books and collected current newspaperr clippings relevant to the area. There is a large digital collection of photographs.

Significance

The collection has historical significance in that it brings together information relating to the settlement of Greensborough and district from the mid 1840s. The Greensborough Historical Society Inc was formed in 2010 to collect, preserve and catalogue the history and heritage of the area from earliest records.

Jessie Partington was born at Willis Vale in 1911 and worked around the farm; when older she and her sisters had to deliver milk around the area from the farm dairy. Jessie attended Greensborough Primary School and from age 4 had piano and singing lessons. She had a beautiful voice, singing in church and choirs.

Janefield Precinct: Dug in building site. The remains of this site are between Greensborough and Janefield. A RAAF Hygiene Training Camp was located on the Plenty River, just south of the Janefield community. It was in use from 1944 to 1946. The Camp was constructed from salvaged materials. Instruction included building and maintenance of grease traps, latrines, elementary plumbing and carpentry.

Tells the story of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Diamond Valley Football League. In particular it centres on Jim Medhurst the only former player present from the Greensborough team that won the inaugural 1921 premiership.

Significance

Jim Medhurst's ancestors were a pioneering family in the district. His father played football for the Old Brittanias, a fore runner of the Collingwood Football Club.

Prudence Partington was born in 1858 at a cottage at the Watsonia Toll Gate operated by her father Charles. The family later moved to Willis Vale. After their parents’ deaths, Maria and Prudence moved to a house in Sellars Street Watsonia in 1890. They lived together until their deaths in 1930, just two months apart.

Significance

A pioneer Greensborough family.

Significance

Greensborough Cemetery was created when land was given for the cemetery by Mr William Poulter, a local settler, about 1864. The cemetery holds the graves of many early settlers in the district.

Greensborough has been a popular place for picnics This article describes the first annual Labour picnic organised by the women's committee of the Victorian branch of the Australian Labour Party in 1925. A highlight of the day was a trek to the Batman Apple Tree in Bosch's orchard.

This picnic was held at Mr Bosch's orchard and visited the "Batman" apple tree.
