Greensborough Historical Society Victoria

The European settlement of Greensborough was from 1839 onward. The Society's aim is to collect, catalogue and preserve the history and heritage of Greensborough and its environs from the earliest records to the present time. Whilst called Greensborough Historical Society, its coverage is not limited to that area alone and includes Greensborough, Watsonia, Macleod, Montmorency, Briar Hill, Lower Plenty and Bundoora.

The Greensborough Historical Society Inc collection focuses on historical and current information relating to Greensborough and surrounding areas, including the former Shire of Diamond Valley. Information is from mid-1840 to the current time. Items include artifacts, photographs, documents, oral histories, maps, school yearbooks and uniforms, books and collected current newspaperr clippings relevant to the area. There is a large digital collection of photographs.

Significance

The collection has historical significance in that it brings together information relating to the settlement of Greensborough and district from the mid 1840s. The Greensborough Historical Society Inc was formed in 2010 to collect, preserve and catalogue the history and heritage of the area from earliest records.

Grave of Herbert V. Jennings (died 08/07/1931) and Ethel H. Jennings (died 23/09/1953) in Plot# E2 Greensborough Cemetery.

Significance

Greensborough Cemetery was created when land was given for the cemetery by Mr William Poulter, a local settler, about 1864. The cemetery holds the graves of many early settlers in the district.

The grave of James Young Beale (died 06/07/1905), son of Anthony and Katherine Beale, St Helena Cemetery, Greensborough. This is a replacement headstone.

Significance

St Helena Cemetery was originally the burial place of the Beale family and friends. The first burials took place in the 1850s. There are now over 200 burials.

Article one (2000) is about the Loyola College Art Show; article two (1994) deals with an attempt by Diamond valley Council to protect the former Loyola seminary building from demolition; article 3 (undated-Maybe 22/10/2010) deals with the removal of cypress trees on land at Loyola College.

Significance

Articles were collected by Shirley Fraser (nee Black) whose family once owned and farmed the land on which Loyola stands. Mrs Fraser is mentioned in two of the articles.

Historical information

Brochure issued by the Institute of Public Affairs prior to the 1949 Australian federal election criticising the Labor government policy of bank nationalisation.

Significance

The Australian Labor Party's bank nationalisation policy was strenuously opposed by conservative parties and organisations, and probably was a significant factor in its loss of the 1949 federal election.

Janefield Precinct: Old fence line, and retained earth on fence line. The remains of this site are between Greensborough and Janefield. A RAAF Hygiene Training Camp was located on the Plenty River, just south of the Janefield community. It was in use from 1944 to 1946. The Camp was constructed from salvaged materials. Instruction included building and maintenance of grease traps, latrines, elementary plumbing and carpentry.

Issued by the 1st/2nd Greensborough Group as an invitation to an award ceremony. Greig Andrew Wanless was to receive the BP Award on 29/10/1982.

Significance

The Greensborough Scout Group have had a long history with the youth of the area. The Wanless family held a large area of land to the immediate north of the township.

The Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) was an Australian aircraft manufacturer. The CAC was established in 1936, to provide Australia with the capability to produce military aircraft and engines. This staff photograph was taken circa 1942. Greensborough local Joan Petts (b1923) can be seen far right.
