Greensborough Historical Society Victoria

The European settlement of Greensborough was from 1839 onward. The Society's aim is to collect, catalogue and preserve the history and heritage of Greensborough and its environs from the earliest records to the present time. Whilst called Greensborough Historical Society, its coverage is not limited to that area alone and includes Greensborough, Watsonia, Macleod, Montmorency, Briar Hill, Lower Plenty and Bundoora.

The Greensborough Historical Society Inc collection focuses on historical and current information relating to Greensborough and surrounding areas, including the former Shire of Diamond Valley. Information is from mid-1840 to the current time. Items include artifacts, photographs, documents, oral histories, maps, school yearbooks and uniforms, books and collected current newspaperr clippings relevant to the area. There is a large digital collection of photographs.

Significance

The collection has historical significance in that it brings together information relating to the settlement of Greensborough and district from the mid 1840s. The Greensborough Historical Society Inc was formed in 2010 to collect, preserve and catalogue the history and heritage of the area from earliest records.

View of Greensborough from Willis Vale. The people in the photograph were visitors and not identified. Willis Vale: House built by Edward Maygar, Robert Whatmough lived there mid 19th century and later sold to Partington family. It was located on the Plenty River at Partington's Flat Greensborough. Land use included farming and orchards. The derelict Willis Vale house was destroyed c1966 when a fire originating from North Plenty Gorge - Kurrak Road - was lit by two teenage boys and made its way several kilometres down to Partington's Flat Greensborough. [Ellen died on 13/10/1903 - Some think this photo is thought to have been taken shortly after, at her funeral.]

These pages are an extract from "Memoirs History 1808-1883" pages 345-350. This is John Lindsay Beale's account of the formation of the Greensborough Roads Board and Robert William Whatmough's participation on that Board.

Significance

The Whatmough and Beale families were pioneers in the Greensborough district. This primary source discusses the difficulties of finding a compromise between those living adjacent to the Plenty River and building and maintaining a roadway between Greensborough and Melbourne.

Born in 1863, he was 15 when the family moved to Willis Vale. Charles married Emma Britnell and moved to Gisborne where 4 of their 5 daughters were born. They built a house in Hailes Street and move back to Greensborough. Charles was a farmer and orchardist.

Significance

A pioneer Greensborough family.

The Blackjack property, house and acres of fruit orchards ran down to the Plenty River off Hume Street Greensborough and was the home of the Robinson family to late 1956. The photographs were taken as slides by Frank Robinson and digitised by his son James in 2015.

Maria Partington was born in 1860 at a cottage at the Watsonia Toll Gate operated by her father Charles. The family later moved to Willis Vale. After their parent’s deaths, Maria and Prudence moved to a house in Sellars Street Watsonia in 1890. They lived together until their deaths in 1930, just two months apart.

Significance

A pioneer Greensborough family.
