What are your opening hours and days, please? My wife and I are travelling to SA to meet up with family on Thursday and my brother-in-law is hoping I may call in to obtain some more info' and take some photo's in Lake Bolac. Our family connections that he has been researching are, James McDonald and Margaret Blanche Hayhoe (maiden name Margaret Blanche Ward) also known as Blanche Mary Hayhoe. Thank you

Historical books and photo displays available daily at the Lake Bolac Information Centre 2110 Glenelg Highway, Lake Bolac. Open 10am-5pm weekdays, 10am-4pm weekends.

You had a soft cover book on the history of the district. Please - a. is it still available? b. does it mention David Aitken and his wife and children? I am a genealogist and trying to confirm David's place in Aitken Family.

Lake Bolac Memorial Hall built in 1922 in memory of the local men who served in the First World War. The original hall was moved from across the street to form the supper room of this hall.

Historical information

Lake Bolac's eastern lake-bed and beach during the 19987-2010 drought, looking south. The lake bank exposed in this photograph is an aboriginal midden about a likometer across excavated by Dr Peter Coutts in the 1970's. Radio carbon dates of charcoal from the base levels date the midden at 12,000 years old, making this one of two middens with this very early date, the other being on the coast near Warrnambool.

Historical information

When 'Bolac Plains' was subdivided in 1846 Henry Gibb took up the northern end and he named the property 'Eilyer'. 'Eilyer' was bought from the estate of Henry Gibb in 1864 by Josiah and Thomas Austin. Gibb had been killed the year before when he fell from a horse. At the time of purchase, 'Eilyer' was 30,000 acres in size. It was later divided up and the second section become known as "Myuna". Ownership of 'Eilyer' has remained in the same family for over 150 years: Thomas and Josiah, Albert, Ronald, Derrick, Kate (Blackburn), Michael (Blackburn).

Historical information

Pictured are wool wagons outside the Veale Brother's store in Lake Bolac. The Veale Family ran this store from 1874 through to 1938 when it was bought by Harold Dixon. It was constructed of locally quarried bluestone and still stands in 2016.

James Wills of "Fintry" Lake Bolac carting bags of wheat with his International truck which was purchased for Goodall's, Mortlake. The truck was able to carry 35 bags of wheat.

Lake Bolac. The concrete weir and water-level adjusted overflow into the man-made channel into Salt Creek on the south side of the lake, circa 1949. The Moreton family is playing in the shallow trickle of water. Malin's windmill and pump can be seen on the bank in the background.

Photograph of the first Lake Bolac Hall built in 1896. It was located in Montgomery Street between the Hotel and Park's Blacksmith Shop. It was later re-located across the street to form the supper room of the Lake Bolac Memorial Hall built in 1922.

The Lake Bolac Music Club was begun in 1950. The first meeting was held on 12/10/1950, 30 members being present. Office Bearers were Henry Clarke (Pres.), Mrs R Critten (Sec.), Mrs L Hucker (Treas.), Committee: Mr G Rance, Mrs L Wills, Mrs Leitman, Mr J Moreton, Mr AE McIntyre (Auditor). The 21st birthday of the club was celebrated with a performance of "My Fair Lady" on 1st & 2nd Oct., 1971. Shown in the Ascot scene, L-R: Joan Moreton, Christina Peters, Jan Facey and Amy Wills (Mrs Eynesford-Hill, Freddy's mother).

Lake Bolac Public Hall, Mongomery Street in 1896. Weatherboard construction by Mr Ollie Anderson of Ararat. Opened by district MP Mr McLellan. In 1922 this building was relocated across Montgomery Street to become the supper room for the newly erected Memorial Hall honouring World War 1 soldiers.

Historical information

Scots Presbyterian Church, Lake Bolac. The architect was Mr George Harriot and it was built of local bluestone by stonemason Mr Helme and completed in 1878. The Rev. Mr J S Muir took the opening service. Mrs John Moffat and Mrs William Veale laid the foundation stone. It was furnished by the existing Kauri pews but the present pulpit is not the original. Both Methodist and Anglican services were held in the building in the early years.

Historical information

Photograph of Lake Bolac Flax Mill boiler house and pits in full production. The mill operated between 1942 and 1959 and was located on the shores of Lake Bolac. Local farmers grew flax which was transported into the factory to be processed. The mill employed Land Army girls, locals and migrant workers.

Crossroads at Lake Bolac, 1963. Junction of the Ballarat/Hamilton and Ararat/Mortlake roads. Starting centre left, the large building on the south-east side of the Ballarat road is Goodall's garage. Next door is the original Bush Nursing centre, then Dalgety's, the Bakery, the Milkbar and on the corner is the Bank of New South Wales building, Elder's, Green's drapery shop and the Lake Bolac Memorial Hall. On the traffic island in front of the Hall is the War Memorial and across the Woorndoo road is the Hotel (with the maroon roof) with stables behind. Across the road again is the Stanbury's General Store with their large warehouse behind.
