A self-portrait, hand-coloured, of 9886 Private Les Chandler in France in 1916. For many Australians the arrival of snow was initially a great novelty. The appeal quickly wore off. The European winter of 1916. The coldest in decades caused further misery for front line troops.

Historical information

Stretcher bearers (possibly some of Les Chandler’s own unit) carry a wounded soldier along ‘duck boards,’ wooden planking that allowed them to traverse the shell-holes and hellish mud of the Western Front.

Historical information

Officers of the 8th Australian Imperial Force. Officers resting, while on manoeuvres, among them William T. Yates of Camperdown. Yates survived Gallipoli, went to France where he won a Distinguished Conduct Medal at Bullecourt and survived a bullet wound to the head in 1917. In 1919 he went to America to study agriculture prior to becoming a soldier settler in the Sunraysia region. The rush for water the heat of the desert among parched troops on manoeuvres.
