Historical information

Straw effigies of the enemy strung up at Seymour Army Camp for use in bayonet drill. It was this sight and the compulsory instruction in the art of killing other men that so repulsed Les Chandler that he requested a transfer to an ambulance unit where he sought to save lives rather than take them.

Historical information

Stretcher bearers (possibly some of Les Chandler’s own unit) carry a wounded soldier along ‘duck boards,’ wooden planking that allowed them to traverse the shell-holes and hellish mud of the Western Front.

Historical information

Troop horses stabled below deck on the “Star of Victoria.” Stan Mountjoy enlisted at age 25 in November 1914 and sailed on that ship in February 1915. The soldier in the middle is Tom Austin of Willaura, Western Victoria.
