The Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum houses a wonderful display of vintage machinery from the region and further afield, including agricultural, pastoral, forestry, mining, printing, industrial and fire-fighting equipment.

Opening Hours

The building is staffed by volunteers, and aims to be open Wednesdays from 11.00 to 3.00 and Saturdays from 10.00 to 4.00, and some Public Holidays. Please note that the Museum will NOT open when the North Central Fire Danger Ratings District has ratings of Code Red (Catastrophic) or Extreme. See the Fire Danger Ratings map at http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/

Horizontal Oil Engine

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Horizontal cylinder oil engine in working condition. Mounted on a steel and timber chassis with 4 wrought iron wheels. Axles are fixed to timber spacer beams. Two flywheels. Cylindrical cooling water tank, cast iron exhaust system and vertical exhaust pipe mounted at crankshaft end. Engine painted dark green, crankshaft balance weights red, flywheels black, cooling water tank black.

Inscriptions & Markings

Oval brass plate on cylinder - "The "Blackstone" / Carter's Patent / 92393 / Quote This No. / When Ordering Parts / Oil Engine". Brass plate on engine frame - "British Patents / Nos. 19640-02 / 24611-03" Oval brass plate on Balance weight guard - "The "Blackstone" Oil Engine / Clutterbuck Bros / Adelaide / South Australia".

Single stage end suction centrifugal pump set up for flat belt drive. Painted grey.

Bilabong. DB85 etched into end of housing. CH12 in relief on end of circular section of housing.

Baker's Cart

Two wheeled horse drawn cart that belonged to John Sexton, Maldon baker c 1940. Painted pale yellow with "Hudson Terraplane" wheel hubcaps. Flat bed with a full width step across the back. Leaf springs.

Inscriptions & Markings

Brass cast plate at the back end of the bed with "Maldon" cast in. Brass engraved plate on the side "The Baker's cart is known to have been used / in Maldon between 1930 and 1950 by bakers / "Doughy" Wells 30/40 and John Sexton 40/50" followed by restoration details.

Drill Press

"Romulus" Costume

Leather helmet, cream shirt, charcoal grey trousers with button fly. Leather belt and pair of leather boots. Helmet lining is 100% black ribbed cotton. .1) & .2) shirt & trousers; .3) helmet; .4) belt; .5) & .6) boots. Right boot has hole drilled through sole to accommodate spike at base of display mannequin's leg. Belt is marked on inside near the buckle "Hero / 38"".

Inscriptions & Markings

Left boot has a white sticker "hora" painted in black. Right boot has black "X" on outside top. Both boots have "ooDED (?) / HURRAY 42" moulded into leather on outer surface of inside edge of tops. Trousers have stick on label "ROM 4" inside back of waistband.

French Curves

.1) Wooden box with hinged lid. 22 wooden and 3 plastic flat curved patterns loose in the box. Several are numbered. .2) 3 clear plastic curves in a pouch. Singer sewing machine without base, decorated with stylised flowers (as per VMVM 27). Hand operated with flywheel.

Drill Press

Wall mounted drill press, flat belt pulley driven. Flat belt pulley and flywheel on LHS, hand operated drill lowering mechanism on RHS. Unpainted.

Kerosene Engine

Single horizontal cylinder kerosene engine in working order. Mounted in a 4 wheeled steel chassis. Galvanised iron fuel tank mounted under engine. Water jacketed exhaust stack behind engine. Painted blue and red.

Pendulum Clock

Mechanical pendulum clock mounted in a glass fronted caabinet. Constructed to time when workers start (clock on) and finish (clock off) work each day.

On the clock face, "ITR logo with International across it / INGRAM Bros. / Sole Agents / Melbourne / International / Time Recording Co. / London". On a metal plate fixed to the back panel of the cabinet, instructions on maintenance of the clock.

Motor Mower

Atco cylinder mower with catcher and rollers. Large metal back roller, wooden small front roller. Foot operated starting mechanism. British coat of arms on catcher featuring lion and unicorn signifying royal appointment of mower manufacturer Mower painted green with green cylindrical petrol tank mounted above the engine between the handles. Engine controls on right side of handle.

Treadle Lathe

Treadle lath for metal turning. Some brass accessories for metal working are laid out on a timber bench attached to the back of the lathe. Painted gunmetal grey and mounted on a black wooden platform for display purposes.

Historical information

The first metal working machine used by David & James Thompson in 1878. Brought by ship by David Thompson who used it on the journey to make working models.

The first machine used by David & James Thompson in their engineering section.

Two cylinder shaft drive motorbike with pillion seat on back mudguard. Restored for use in the movie "Romulus my Father". Spedometer in chromed headlight housing. Springing for front and back wheels, kick start. Black leather seat, black kneepads on petrol tank, bronze / gold petrol tank and mudguards, wire spoked wheels.

4 wheeled mostly wooden wagon with rear wheels of larger diameter than front. Painted white, red and tan with some pin striping on wheels. Multiple leaf springs, 2 rear sets in double configuration. Metal and timber overhead framework for a canopy. Wooden seats along each side.

Singer sewing machine with electric motor and maroon hard cover. Instruction book for No. 66 Singer Sewing Machine - greenpaper cover with red logo on front, 32 pages. Hinged wooden flap forms table when lowered. Machine housing is metal painted fawn with brown drive wheel & foot pedal. Motor is also brown. Base is cream. Cover has cream handle & brass catches. Accessories box R.N. 31.10.

Made of timber with 20 drawers, each with a metal handle bearing manufacturers name.

Clock

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Battery operated clock with a highly lacquered face with an image of half of a split casing pump casing. The image is in blue and black on a white ground centred on a circular wooden clock face. Numbers are imitation chrome plastic covered with lacquer. The second hand is red. The backing board is rectangular. The operating mechanism is centred in a housing on the back.

Maker's name ("Chris Shaw") on a gold sticker at the bottom centre of the back.

Pump - Centrifugal

Single stage, end suction centrifugal pump cut away to reveal interior for display purposes. Painted yellow externally, green internally and red on edges of cut away. Mounted on a wooden pallet.

Significance

Part of the evolution of Kelly & Lewis pumps.

Single stage end suction pump with part of casing cut away to reveal interior. Exterior painted grey, interior blue with edges of cut away in red. Bolted to a metal edged, white painted wooden base. Suction branch 100mm, discharge branch 65mm, impeller diameter 250mm.

Petrol Pump

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Tall free standing petrol pump with glass tank at top displaying amount of petrol pumped up. This is then gravity fed via a hose into a vehicle's petrol tank. Yellow painted with Shell Petrol Co. logo and advertising in red on front and sides and on round illuminated sign at top. Selection lever on front with gallon options 1/2 to 6. Hand pumping lever on RHS.
