The Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum houses a wonderful display of vintage machinery from the region and further afield, including agricultural, pastoral, forestry, mining, printing, industrial and fire-fighting equipment.

Opening Hours

The building is staffed by volunteers, and aims to be open Wednesdays from 11.00 to 3.00 and Saturdays from 10.00 to 4.00, and some Public Holidays. Please note that the Museum will NOT open when the North Central Fire Danger Ratings District has ratings of Code Red (Catastrophic) or Extreme. See the Fire Danger Ratings map at http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/

Steam Engine

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Large 4 wheeled 9 HP single cylinder (horizontal) steam engine, designed to be towed. Front wheels smaller than rear. Folding smoke stack with spark arrestor. Fire box and smoke stack painted black, boiler and steam cylinder green, wheels grey. In working order but engine is connected to an independent steam/air source to be operated for display purposes. 150 cm flywheel on LHS looking forward toward the front. Timber front turntable and back brake pad assembly. Brass water drain tap on firebox. Also other brass fittings on firebox.

Historical information

Restored by Maldon Flywheelers Association. Originally owned and used by Zemster Brothers of "Brook Mount" Shellbourne.

Known as "Aunty Jack"

On brass ring near top of firebox:- "Serial No. 5672, Marshal Sons & Co. / Limited / Engineers / Gainsborough England". Metal plate on front turntable:- "Restoration of the Front Undercarriage / and retubing of the boiler by / Castlemaine Technical School / 1979". Cast in relief on wheel hubs:- "Marshal Sons & Co. Gainsborough".

.1) Heritage award,bronze male figure of a stonemason standing behind a slab of stone engraved, "Mt. Alexander Branch of National Trust Heritage Award for Excellence" presented to "Thompsons Foundry Drawing Office Interest Group". .2) Framed citation explaining the award. Black plastic frame, glass front, featuring an historic photo of Thompsons drawing office.

Petrol Engine

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Single cylinder horizontal petrol engine mounted on a 4 wheeled trolley. Two flywheels, one either side, no pulley. Galvanised cylindrical fuel tank mounted on a wooden box in front. Box contains a battery and ignition coil. Trolley has cast iron wheels and is designed for pulling by hand. Painted red and grey. Probably a power source for farm machinery.

Inscriptions & Markings

On a brass plate fixed to the cylinder. "Waterloo Boy Gasoline Engine / No. 81491, HP 4 / Waterloo Gasoline Engine Co. / Waterloo Iowa / Patented / August 7 1900, Dec 3 1901, Oct 7 1907 / Other patents pending / Sold by Waterloo Gasoline Engine Co." On each side of the water tank is an oval white transfer with "Waterloo Boy" above an illustration of a small boy wearing a wide brimmed hat.

Blower - Centrifugal

Centrifugal blower direct coupled to an electric motor. Painted dark blue with an anti-clockwise direction arrow picked out in white on the front.

Pressure Testing Pump

Hand operated pressure pump with water reservoir. High and low pressure hoses. Low pressure for filling reservoir, high pressure reinforced hose for delivering water to item to be pressurised. Brass fittings. Reservoir painted pale green and operating handle yellow & red.

PRINT-TYPE CABINET

Wooden cabinet for holding print type. Made of pine with pale grey/white laminated top. Contains 16 trays in two blocks of 8 for storing metal type. Each tray is divided into sections Trays are wooden with some painted on front .

DC Generator - Steam Powered

Siemens DC generator driven by a Thompsons two cylinder steam engine. The engine has vertical cylinders and there is a flywheel between the generator and engine. Generator painted grey, engine painted red. The system is connected to low pressure steam and can be run very slowly.

Brass plate on generator "Siemens Brothers / Dynamo Works Ltd. / London Stafford / Direct Current Generator", followed by specifications. Thompsons Engineering in relief on steam engine side plates. "60" on base of engine.

Type Cabinet

Galleys print type cabinet holding type which has been set to print. Each tray has letters of alphabet on right hand side. Green painted metal cabinet.

Pump - Centrifugal

Part of the evolution of Kelly & Lewis pumps.

Horizontal Oil Engine

Horizontal cylinder oil engine in working order. Mounted on a steel chassis with 4 cast iron wheels. Two flywheels and one flat belt pulley. Cylindrical cooling water tank and exhaust vertical exhaust pipe mounted at crankshaft end. Engine painted green with red wheels and red crankshaft balance weights.

Oval brass plate on cylinder - "The Austral Oil Engine / Ronaldson Bros. / Makers / No. 1113 ? & Tippett / Ballarat Victoria" Thin oval metal transfer on cooling water tank with makers name and place of manufacture around Australian coat of arms.

Pump - Centrifugal

Painted light green with moving parts and bolts picked out in black. End suction, overshot discharge Bolted to a wooden base. V belt driven.

Perforating Machine

Metal and timber perforator with multiple metal pins. Operated by a hand lever on RHS. Four metal feet with holes for screwing to bench top.

One Ton Truck

Graham Brothers flat bed one ton truck. In-line four cylinder engine. Blue body with white engine housing, red engine block, cream wheel trim and upholstery maroon chasis. Natural timber seat frame, tray and running boards. Chrome radiator housing and headlights. Retrofitted electric turning indicators.

Significance

Used in annual Maldon Easter parade.

Guillotine

Free standing large guillotine operated by a hand lever, patented 14-12-1909. Melbourne agents S. Cooke Proprietary Limited. Large hand wheel on top small one in front under plate, etched with parallel lines and ruler (brass) in inches. Made of metal, painted black.
