The Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum houses a wonderful display of vintage machinery from the region and further afield, including agricultural, pastoral, forestry, mining, printing, industrial and fire-fighting equipment.

Opening Hours

The building is staffed by volunteers, and aims to be open Wednesdays from 11.00 to 3.00 and Saturdays from 10.00 to 4.00, and some Public Holidays. Please note that the Museum will NOT open when the North Central Fire Danger Ratings District has ratings of Code Red (Catastrophic) or Extreme. See the Fire Danger Ratings map at http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/

"Ray & Gilbert" articulated arm type manual drawing machine as used in a drawing office. Fitted with "W & G" scale rulers. Rulers are plastic coated timber. Black arms and handle, white rulers. Mounted on a wooden drawing board. Almost identical to VMVM 113.3 but in better condition. .4) Metal adjusting spanner

Horizontal Oil Engine

Horizontal cylinder oil engine in working order. Mounted on a steel chassis with 4 cast iron wheels. Two flywheels and one flat belt pulley. Cylindrical cooling water tank and exhaust vertical exhaust pipe mounted at crankshaft end. Engine painted green with red wheels and red crankshaft balance weights.

Oval brass plate on cylinder - "The Austral Oil Engine / Ronaldson Bros. / Makers / No. 1113 ? & Tippett / Ballarat Victoria" Thin oval metal transfer on cooling water tank with makers name and place of manufacture around Australian coat of arms.

Condenser Air Pump

Vertical cylinder reciprocating condenser air pump with two 107 cm diameter flywheels (one on each end of crankshaft). The operating cylinder at at top of the machine has a centrifugal governor. Access ladder to platform at front. Painted black and red.

Single horse drawn tip dray, restored by G & S Little in 1999. Made of timber with metal fittings and wheel rims. Enclosed sides with hinged front and rear panels. Chassis and wheels painted dark red, body in dark blue.

Historical information

Used for carting rock to crushing batteries, road making, railway track building.

Galleys print type cabinet holding type which has been set to print. Each tray has letters of alphabet on right hand side. Green painted metal cabinet.

Pump - Centrifugal

Single stage double suction pump with side suction and discharge branches. 300 mm suction branch, 250 mm discharge branch, 500 mm impeller. Painted yellow with name and direction arrow picked out in black. Top half of casing fixed in an open position (hinged) to reveal the pump's interior. Mounted on a wooden pallet.

Treadle Lathe

Treadle lath for metal turning. Some brass accessories for metal working are laid out on a timber bench attached to the back of the lathe. Painted gunmetal grey and mounted on a black wooden platform for display purposes.

Historical information

The first metal working machine used by David & James Thompson in 1878. Brought by ship by David Thompson who used it on the journey to make working models.
