The Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum houses a wonderful display of vintage machinery from the region and further afield, including agricultural, pastoral, forestry, mining, printing, industrial and fire-fighting equipment.

Opening Hours

The building is staffed by volunteers, and aims to be open Wednesdays from 11.00 to 3.00 and Saturdays from 10.00 to 4.00, and some Public Holidays. Please note that the Museum will NOT open when the North Central Fire Danger Ratings District has ratings of Code Red (Catastrophic) or Extreme. See the Fire Danger Ratings map at http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/

Digital Plotter

Early model A4 single pen computer controlled digital plotter. Cream coloured plastic outer case with clear tinted hinged plastic cover over pen compartment.

On the back panel various inscription panels indicating it is a Hewlett Packard machine Model 7470A Serial No. 2210A 12562.

Fergie Tractor

Grey Ferguson tractor restored to working order with a detachable grader blade. A rollover protection bar has been added to comply with modern regulations for safety. Three point linkage and 3 new tyres. Club permit registration.

Motor Mower

OGDEN early model cylindrical lawn mower. Small back roller, no catcher, rope start. Small gold painted petrol tank mounted between handles for gravity feed. Belt driven cylinder blades, aluminium engine cowl, rubber rimmed wheels, engine control on RHS handle.

Rope Making Machine

Hand operated rope making machine with hooks for 5 strands. Mounted on a steel angle bracket bolted to a piece of timber. Handle painted green, remainder unpainted.

Pendulum Clock

Mechanical pendulum clock mounted in a glass fronted caabinet. Constructed to time when workers start (clock on) and finish (clock off) work each day.

Inscriptions & Markings

On the clock face, "ITR logo with International across it / INGRAM Bros. / Sole Agents / Melbourne / International / Time Recording Co. / London". On a metal plate fixed to the back panel of the cabinet, instructions on maintenance of the clock.

Baker's Cart

Two wheeled horse drawn cart that belonged to John Sexton, Maldon baker c 1940. Painted pale yellow with "Hudson Terraplane" wheel hubcaps. Flat bed with a full width step across the back. Leaf springs.

Brass cast plate at the back end of the bed with "Maldon" cast in. Brass engraved plate on the side "The Baker's cart is known to have been used / in Maldon between 1930 and 1950 by bakers / "Doughy" Wells 30/40 and John Sexton 40/50" followed by restoration details.

Motor Mower

Cylindrical lawn mower with grass catcher. Green painted catcher and engine cover, orange petrol tank and handles. Pull start with engine control on RHS handle.

Name prominantly printed on front of catcher "Qualcast / four stroke / Super 12". Sticker on engine "Stowmarket, SIP (in a red diamond background) Suffolk / Engine type 75G14 Model No. 25A / Made in Englsnd / Recommended Lubricants" followed by a table of lubricant makers and oil specification.

Lathe

Small metal lathe mounted on a metal stand. Driven by a 1/4 HP 1425 RPM electric motor. Comes with a box of assorted chucks and fittings.

.1) Heritage award,bronze male figure of a stonemason standing behind a slab of stone engraved, "Mt. Alexander Branch of National Trust Heritage Award for Excellence" presented to "Thompsons Foundry Drawing Office Interest Group". .2) Framed citation explaining the award. Black plastic frame, glass front, featuring an historic photo of Thompsons drawing office.

Horizontal Oil Engine

Austral 8 HP oil engine on 4 wheeled steel chassis with wrought iron wheels. Two double flywheels and flat belt pulley. Water cooled exhaust system at the crank end of the engine. Galvanised iron fuel tank slung under the engine. Painted green and black with red wheels.

Steam Engine

Vertical cylinder steam engine painted black, red and grey. In working order. Large flywheel and pulley on RHS and mounted on a raised concrete base. Belt drive overhead governor.

Drafting Sets

Seven boxed drafting sets containing compasses, pens and dividers. Padded lids, interiors lined with velvet, blue, black or green. .1) Belonged to Peter Fraser. .2) Belonged to Ian Hooper. .6) Belonged to Noel Cawthorn.

Chainsaw

"Pioneer" chainsaw with green housing. Pull start, no chain. Compliance plate on back (see Below) second plate on top.

Compliance plate on back "Pioneer Saws / Model / 450 / Serial No. A10778 / Division of Outboard Marine Australia Pty. Ltd. / Bankstown NSW". Cast in relief on side "Pioneer & Pine Trees".

Bandsaw

Large belt driven bandsaw with wooden frame. Metal upper and lower driving wheels for bandsaw. Upper brass and lower cast iron. Wooden work table and saw guard. In poor working order and blade not fitted.

Rock Drill

Oswald pneumatic rock drill. What appears to be an operating lever extending to one side. Body only, no drill bits. Unpainted.

Significance

This was the first rock drill to be made in Australia and was made in Maldon. It was used in the Carmen's Tunnel mine Maldon.

Presentation Cup

Guilded presentation cup mounted on a moulded bakelite base. No details of presentation.

Motor Mower

Green painted cylindrical lawn mower with rear roller, pull start and no catcher. Regal coat of arms on front housing signifying maker is official motor mower supplier to the Queen. Rectangular petrol tank mounted between the handles above the engine. Small wooden roller in two parts on front. Pale grey plastic cover on starter mechanism. Height adjustment on front roller. Engine controls on right handle.

Car Jack

Mechanical mobile car jack made by the TREWELLAH company of Trentham for APAC Industries Ltd. Known as a "Service Jack" used for servicing cars and light vehicles. Mounted on 4 wheels, two being castors. Painted red.

Manometer

Gauge for measuring pressure. Blue anodised diecast casing. Vestige of plastic tube emerging from the top. Hand operated brass pump on the bottom.

Tip Dray

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Single horse drawn tip dray, restored by G & S Little in 1999. Made of timber with metal fittings and wheel rims. Enclosed sides with hinged front and rear panels. Chassis and wheels painted dark red, body in dark blue.

Historical information

Used for carting rock to crushing batteries, road making, railway track building.

Rectangular brass plaque on LHS looking forward detailing restoration and possible usage.

Air Flow Guage

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Comprises two calibrated cylinders mounted on a board for measuring inches of water. Gauges measure air velocity. Cylinders are of steel with calibrations on aluminium casings. Flexible tubes are connected to reservoirs at the back of the mounting board, one black rubber the other red plastic. A reference barometer is mounted at the bottom right hand corner of the backing board. Reservoirs at the rear are of metal, coloured blue.

Drill Press

Wall mounted drill press, flat belt pulley driven. Flat belt pulley and flywheel on LHS, hand operated drill lowering mechanism on RHS. Unpainted.

Motor Mower

"Victa" 2-stroke lawn mower with rope start. Coloured green with plastic and rubber wheels. Height adjustment on each wheel. Early model with circular base, snorkel air intake and two blades.

Early model VICTA lawn mower.

"Romulus" Costume

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Leather helmet, cream shirt, charcoal grey trousers with button fly. Leather belt and pair of leather boots. Helmet lining is 100% black ribbed cotton. .1) & .2) shirt & trousers; .3) helmet; .4) belt; .5) & .6) boots. Right boot has hole drilled through sole to accommodate spike at base of display mannequin's leg. Belt is marked on inside near the buckle "Hero / 38"".

Inscriptions & Markings

Left boot has a white sticker "hora" painted in black. Right boot has black "X" on outside top. Both boots have "ooDED (?) / HURRAY 42" moulded into leather on outer surface of inside edge of tops. Trousers have stick on label "ROM 4" inside back of waistband.
