The Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum houses a wonderful display of vintage machinery from the region and further afield, including agricultural, pastoral, forestry, mining, printing, industrial and fire-fighting equipment.

Opening Hours

The building is staffed by volunteers, and aims to be open Wednesdays from 11.00 to 3.00 and Saturdays from 10.00 to 4.00, and some Public Holidays. Please note that the Museum will NOT open when the North Central Fire Danger Ratings District has ratings of Code Red (Catastrophic) or Extreme. Sewing Machine

Singer sewing machine with electric motor and maroon hard cover. Instruction book for No. 66 Singer Sewing Machine - greenpaper cover with red logo on front, 32 pages. Hinged wooden flap forms table when lowered. Machine housing is metal painted fawn with brown drive wheel & foot pedal. Motor is also brown. Base is cream. Cover has cream handle & brass catches. Accessories box R.N. 31.10.

Model Truck

"Tarrengower Times" model truck registration plate TLJ 10. Flat tray, spoked wheels with pneumatic tyres, leaf springs front and rear, leather upholstery. "Century" battery behind cabin with" Century" in black on gold. Painted maroon with gold trim, gold painted headlights and radiator frame.

On driver's door in gold lettering "The / Tarrengower / Times /High St. / Maldon / Est. 1858" Logo on oval plate at top of radiator.

Steam Engine

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Horizontal steam engine driving a flat belt pulley. Pulley shaft at right angles to engine shaft also carries a large flywheel. A mechanical oiler mounted on the engine base is activated by the engine valve shaft. Engine cylinder and valve housing painted dark green. Engine base, pulley and flywheel painted maroon. Oiler painted mid green.

Historical information

Thought to be the world's only working example of this engine. Used for driving overhead shafts in workshops, sawmills etc. Restored by members of the MVMM. Found at the Demsters property Shelbourne.

Significance

Thought to be the only one of its kind in the world.

'Romulus ' Costume

.1) Cream Shirt &.2) Charcoal grey trousers with button fly and rayon? lining down to knee level. .3) Brown leather helmet with black, cotton lining, ear flaps and chin strap with buckle fastening. Makers name indicates helmet is of German origin. .4) Brown leather belt with buckle. .5 & .6) Pair brown leather boots. Right boot has hole drilled through the sole to accommodate a supporting spike on the display manequin's base.

Historical information

The costume was worn by the character of Romulus in the movie "Romulus My Father" which was filmed in Central Victoria and used a motor bike in the Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum's collection. the film company subsequently donated the entire outfit to the museum.

.4) is marked on inside surface near the buckle : "HERO/38" Left boot sports a white sticker with "hora" printed in black. Right boot has black "X" on outside top edge. Both boots have "ooded(?) /MURRAY42" moulded into leather on inner top edges.. .2) bear a stick-on label printed with "ROM 4" on inside back waistband.

Clock

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Battery operated clock with a highly lacquered face with an image of half of a split casing pump casing. The image is in blue and black on a white ground centred on a circular wooden clock face. Numbers are imitation chrome plastic covered with lacquer. The second hand is red. The backing board is rectangular. The operating mechanism is centred in a housing on the back.

Maker's name ("Chris Shaw") on a gold sticker at the bottom centre of the back.

Chainsaw

"Pioneer" chainsaw with green housing. Pull start, no chain. Compliance plate on back (see Below) second plate on top.

LINO TYPE MACHINE

Lino-type casting machine with furnace for casting lead plates. Makes type used in printing. Motor made by Crompton Patison. Keyboard to select letters to be cast.

Miniature Water Turbine.

Miniature water turbine (pelton wheel, single jet) mounted on a wooden frame. Undershot wheel driving a pulley at one end of the shaft. Flywheel at the other end of the shaft. Small die-cast buckets, some broken and missing. Pelton wheel and flywheel painted red, wooden frame unpainted.

Ten slide rules, various makers. All cased. Materials vary from cases in cardboard, vinyl, leather, plastic and slide rules in wood, plastic, metal. .23) Instruction book for E. Green's Hemmi's slide rule printed in Japan in 1934.

Steam Engine

Large 4 wheeled 9 HP single cylinder (horizontal) steam engine, designed to be towed. Front wheels smaller than rear. Folding smoke stack with spark arrestor. Fire box and smoke stack painted black, boiler and steam cylinder green, wheels grey. In working order but engine is connected to an independent steam/air source to be operated for display purposes. 150 cm flywheel on LHS looking forward toward the front. Timber front turntable and back brake pad assembly. Brass water drain tap on firebox. Also other brass fittings on firebox.

Restored by Maldon Flywheelers Association. Originally owned and used by Zemster Brothers of "Brook Mount" Shellbourne.

On brass ring near top of firebox:- "Serial No. 5672, Marshal Sons & Co. / Limited / Engineers / Gainsborough England". Metal plate on front turntable:- "Restoration of the Front Undercarriage / and retubing of the boiler by / Castlemaine Technical School / 1979". Cast in relief on wheel hubs:- "Marshal Sons & Co. Gainsborough".

Drawing Machine

"Ray & Gilbert" articulated arm type manual drawing machine as used in a drawing office. Fitted with "W & G" scale rulers. Rulers are plastic coated timber. Black arms and handle, white rulers. Mounted on a wooden drawing board.. .4) Metal adjusting spanner.

Perforating Machine

Metal and timber perforator with multiple metal pins. Operated by a hand lever on RHS. Four metal feet with holes for screwing to bench top.

French Curves

.1) Wooden box with hinged lid. 22 wooden and 3 plastic flat curved patterns loose in the box. Several are numbered. .2) 3 clear plastic curves in a pouch. Made in Italy. .3) 3 clear plastic curves in a pouch. Made in Italy. .3 .....31) Plastic curves. French curves are used in a drawing office to draw a smooth best fit line through a number of points.

Rock Drill

Oswald pneumatic rock drill. What appears to be an operating lever extending to one side. Body only, no drill bits. Unpainted.

Significance

This was the first rock drill to be made in Australia and was made in Maldon. It was used in the Carmen's Tunnel mine Maldon.

Petrol Engine

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Single cylinder horizontal petrol engine mounted on a 4 wheeled trolley. Two flywheels, one either side, no pulley. Galvanised cylindrical fuel tank mounted on a wooden box in front. Box contains a battery and ignition coil. Trolley has cast iron wheels and is designed for pulling by hand. Painted red and grey. Probably a power source for farm machinery.

Inscriptions & Markings

On a brass plate fixed to the cylinder. "Waterloo Boy Gasoline Engine / No. 81491, HP 4 / Waterloo Gasoline Engine Co. / Waterloo Iowa / Patented / August 7 1900, Dec 3 1901, Oct 7 1907 / Other patents pending / Sold by Waterloo Gasoline Engine Co." On each side of the water tank is an oval white transfer with "Waterloo Boy" above an illustration of a small boy wearing a wide brimmed hat.

Oil Engine

10 HP horizontal cylinder oil engine in working order. Mounted on a steel chassis with 4 wrought iron wheels. Two flywheels and one flat belt pulley. Rectangular cooling water tank and cast iron exhaust pot with vertical exhaust pipe mounted at crankshaft end. Engine painted green with pale yellow trim. Blow torch start on compression when hot bulb is of certain temperature. Mechanical water and fuel pumps.

"Victa" 2-stroke lawn mower with rope start. Coloured green with plastic and rubber wheels. Height adjustment on each wheel. Early model with circular base, snorkel air intake and two blades.

4 wheeled mostly wooden wagon with rear wheels of larger diameter than front. Painted white, red and tan with some pin striping on wheels. Multiple leaf springs, 2 rear sets in double configuration. Metal and timber overhead framework for a canopy. Wooden seats along each side.
