The Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum houses a wonderful display of vintage machinery from the region and further afield, including agricultural, pastoral, forestry, mining, printing, industrial and fire-fighting equipment.

Opening Hours

The building is staffed by volunteers, and aims to be open Wednesdays from 11.00 to 3.00 and Saturdays from 10.00 to 4.00, and some Public Holidays. Please note that the Museum will NOT open when the North Central Fire Danger Ratings District has ratings of Code Red (Catastrophic) or Extreme. See the Fire Danger Ratings map at http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/

PRINT-TYPE CABINET

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

PRESCO Type Cabinet C24 made of wood with sloping work top and holder for box of type set almost vertically behind it. Twenty-four trays for storing type, each with central handle for easy removal. Many trays are labelled with font name and sizes. Manufactured.

Drill Press

Pump - Semi Rotary

Manual lever action semi-rotary pump. In line suction and discharge branches. Painted red with black handle.

Motor Mower

OGDEN early model cylindrical lawn mower. Small back roller, no catcher, rope start. Small gold painted petrol tank mounted between handles for gravity feed. Belt driven cylinder blades, aluminium engine cowl, rubber rimmed wheels, engine control on RHS handle.

Fergie Tractor

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Grey Ferguson tractor restored to working order with a detachable grader blade. A rollover protection bar has been added to comply with modern regulations for safety. Three point linkage and 3 new tyres. Club permit registration.

Wooden cabinet for holding print type. Made of pine with pale grey/white laminated top. Contains 16 trays in two blocks of 8 for storing metal type. Each tray is divided into sections Trays are wooden with some painted on front .

Motor Mower

Cylindrical lawn mower with grass catcher. Green painted catcher and engine cover, orange petrol tank and handles. Pull start with engine control on RHS handle.

Name prominantly printed on front of catcher "Qualcast / four stroke / Super 12". Sticker on engine "Stowmarket, SIP (in a red diamond background) Suffolk / Engine type 75G14 Model No. 25A / Made in Englsnd / Recommended Lubricants" followed by a table of lubricant makers and oil specification.

Car Jack

Mechanical mobile car jack made by the TREWELLAH company of Trentham for APAC Industries Ltd. Known as a "Service Jack" used for servicing cars and light vehicles. Mounted on 4 wheels, two being castors. Painted red.

Sewing Machine

Treadle sewing machine with metal base, wooden table and leather drive belt. The base plate is decorated with a rural scene featuring a 3 storey house, male & female figures in Victorian dress, horse and buggy painted in colour.

Name printed on arm of machine, hard to decipher - appears to be "New Home Treadle Serial No 404879"

Petrol Engine

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Single cylinder horizontal petrol engine mounted on a 4 wheeled trolley. Two flywheels, one either side, no pulley. Galvanised cylindrical fuel tank mounted on a wooden box in front. Box contains a battery and ignition coil. Trolley has cast iron wheels and is designed for pulling by hand. Painted red and grey. Probably a power source for farm machinery.

Inscriptions & Markings

On a brass plate fixed to the cylinder. "Waterloo Boy Gasoline Engine / No. 81491, HP 4 / Waterloo Gasoline Engine Co. / Waterloo Iowa / Patented / August 7 1900, Dec 3 1901, Oct 7 1907 / Other patents pending / Sold by Waterloo Gasoline Engine Co." On each side of the water tank is an oval white transfer with "Waterloo Boy" above an illustration of a small boy wearing a wide brimmed hat.

Invalid Car

Battery powered invalid tricycle. Black body-work, wire spoked wheels, 2 small headlights. Appears to be built to accommodate a reclining figure. Contains 2 crimson corduroy cushions, one solid seat cushion filled with Dunlopillo, the other a rectangular back-rest cushion filled with latex foam rubber. Original seat cushion had sage green top with blue/white striped mattress ticking sides & back. Original back support cushion had a cloth label - see below.

On an aluminium plate on top of the electric motor :- "Chassis No. 2067, Type EC2, 24-36 volts / RPM 2700 Serial No. 2161". On back cushion: "TEX Foam / Yours for restful sleep / Contents / New Latex Foam / Made by TEXFOAM PTY LTD. Mordialloc. Victoria"

Chainsaw

Early model Stihl chainsaw with a gravity fed swivel carburetor. Painted grey and black, rear shield unpainted aluminium. Red plate fixed to side with name and specifications.

Pump - Centrifugal

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Single stage double suction pump with side suction and discharge branches. 300 mm suction branch, 250 mm discharge branch, 500 mm impeller. Painted yellow with name and direction arrow picked out in black. Top half of casing fixed in an open position (hinged) to reveal the pump's interior. Mounted on a wooden pallet.

Telephone

Black bakelite telephone with handpiece attached by a chord. Front dial has a central handle that can be turned to contact central switchboard. No direct dial facility. Sits on rubber feet.

Tip Dray

Single horse drawn tip dray, restored by G & S Little in 1999. Made of timber with metal fittings and wheel rims. Enclosed sides with hinged front and rear panels. Chassis and wheels painted dark red, body in dark blue.

Historical information

Used for carting rock to crushing batteries, road making, railway track building.

Pump - Vertical Turbine

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Two stage vertical turbine pump attached to a short discharge column and mounted in a frame with a gearbox at the top. The gearbox is cut away to reveal the interior. The pump is of Giles & Gascon design as sold by Kelly & Lewis. The pump and gearbox are set up to display the unit for sales and marketing purposes.
