The Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum houses a wonderful display of vintage machinery from the region and further afield, including agricultural, pastoral, forestry, mining, printing, industrial and fire-fighting equipment.

Opening Hours

The building is staffed by volunteers, and aims to be open Wednesdays from 11.00 to 3.00 and Saturdays from 10.00 to 4.00, and some Public Holidays. Please note that the Museum will NOT open when the North Central Fire Danger Ratings District has ratings of Code Red (Catastrophic) or Extreme. See the Fire Danger Ratings map at http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/

"Romulus" Costume

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Leather helmet, cream shirt, charcoal grey trousers with button fly. Leather belt and pair of leather boots. Helmet lining is 100% black ribbed cotton. .1) & .2) shirt & trousers; .3) helmet; .4) belt; .5) & .6) boots. Right boot has hole drilled through sole to accommodate spike at base of display mannequin's leg. Belt is marked on inside near the buckle "Hero / 38"".

Inscriptions & Markings

Left boot has a white sticker "hora" painted in black. Right boot has black "X" on outside top. Both boots have "ooDED (?) / HURRAY 42" moulded into leather on outer surface of inside edge of tops. Trousers have stick on label "ROM 4" inside back of waistband.

LINO TYPE MACHINE

Lino-type casting machine with furnace for casting lead plates. Makes type used in printing. Motor made by Crompton Patison. Keyboard to select letters to be cast.

Motor Mower

Cylindrical lawn mower with grass catcher. Green painted catcher and engine cover, orange petrol tank and handles. Pull start with engine control on RHS handle.

Inscriptions & Markings

Name prominantly printed on front of catcher "Qualcast / four stroke / Super 12". Sticker on engine "Stowmarket, SIP (in a red diamond background) Suffolk / Engine type 75G14 Model No. 25A / Made in Englsnd / Recommended Lubricants" followed by a table of lubricant makers and oil specification.

Bandsaw

Large belt driven bandsaw with wooden frame. Metal upper and lower driving wheels for bandsaw. Upper brass and lower cast iron. Wooden work table and saw guard. In poor working order and blade not fitted.

Steam Engine

Large 4 wheeled 9 HP single cylinder (horizontal) steam engine, designed to be towed. Front wheels smaller than rear. Folding smoke stack with spark arrestor. Fire box and smoke stack painted black, boiler and steam cylinder green, wheels grey. In working order but engine is connected to an independent steam/air source to be operated for display purposes. 150 cm flywheel on LHS looking forward toward the front. Timber front turntable and back brake pad assembly. Brass water drain tap on firebox. Also other brass fittings on firebox.

Historical information

Restored by Maldon Flywheelers Association. Originally owned and used by Zemster Brothers of "Brook Mount" Shellbourne.

On brass ring near top of firebox:- "Serial No. 5672, Marshal Sons & Co. / Limited / Engineers / Gainsborough England". Metal plate on front turntable:- "Restoration of the Front Undercarriage / and retubing of the boiler by / Castlemaine Technical School / 1979". Cast in relief on wheel hubs:- "Marshal Sons & Co. Gainsborough".

Pump - Mixed Flow

Two stage vertical mixed flow pump with part of casing cut away to reveal interior. Painted black with edges of cut away in red.

Pendulum Clock

Mechanical pendulum clock mounted in a glass fronted caabinet. Constructed to time when workers start (clock on) and finish (clock off) work each day.

Inscriptions & Markings

On the clock face, "ITR logo with International across it / INGRAM Bros. / Sole Agents / Melbourne / International / Time Recording Co. / London". On a metal plate fixed to the back panel of the cabinet, instructions on maintenance of the clock.

Pump - Centrifugal

Single stage, end suction centrifugal pump cut away to reveal interior for display purposes. Painted yellow externally, green internally and red on edges of cut away. Mounted on a wooden pallet.

Significance

Part of the evolution of Kelly & Lewis pumps.

Circular Slide Rule Calculator

Sewing Machine Accessories

(See Registration No. 26.3). Green rectangular cardboard box with lid containing 5 feet for various sewing operations, a screw for attaching them, a button hole guide and a hem guide.

On lid in red, "Singer / Accessories for 66K Machine No. SIMANCO / 120842", "25527", "12466", "35931", "36583". 31.4 is etched with Singer logo and USA.

Motor Mower

Victa twin cylinder rotary mower with grass catcher. Rubber tired wheels. Painted orange.

Significance

A rare object, not many were manufactured because of an inherent design fault in positioning the pistons vertically and it was found there was insufficient pressure to deliver oil to the top one.

On engine cowl "500 Twin / 170 cc 2 Stroke". On base "Victa".

Furniture Storage Shelf

Wooden furniture storage shelf with sloping front. Seven wooden shelves, each divided vertically into compartments of various widths, 6 to a shelf. "Furniture" is used to set spaces between sections of print.

Horizontal Oil Engine

Austral 8 HP oil engine on 4 wheeled steel chassis with wrought iron wheels. Two double flywheels and flat belt pulley. Water cooled exhaust system at the crank end of the engine. Galvanised iron fuel tank slung under the engine. Painted green and black with red wheels.

On an oval brass plate on the side of the engine :- "The Austral Oil Engine / Ronaldson Bros / Makers / No 663 / & Tippett / Ballarat Victoria"

Motorbike

Two cylinder shaft drive motorbike with pillion seat on back mudguard. Restored for use in the movie "Romulus my Father". Spedometer in chromed headlight housing. Springing for front and back wheels, kick start. Black leather seat, black kneepads on petrol tank, bronze / gold petrol tank and mudguards, wire spoked wheels.

On petrol tank, circular yellow enameled badge with a crown at top, central sun motif with rays and "Sunbeam" at bottom.

Chainsaw

"Jonsered" petrol chainsaw with approximately 19" (50cm) bar. Red engine housing, aluminium handle. Pull start with information plate on starter housing.

Pump - Semi Rotary

Wagon

4 wheeled mostly wooden wagon with rear wheels of larger diameter than front. Painted white, red and tan with some pin striping on wheels. Multiple leaf springs, 2 rear sets in double configuration. Metal and timber overhead framework for a canopy. Wooden seats along each side.

A set of plain wooden trays used by the "Tea Lady" at Thompsons Castlemaine Ltd. Plain wood with some lacquer. .1 & .2) Have hardboard bases with cut out sections on the front lips. All have finger slots on the right and left sides.

Oil Engine

Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum Inc, Maldon

Bartram type AK, 5 HP horizontal cylinder water cooled magneto ignition oil Engine mounted on a metal and timber chassis with 4 wheels. It has its own cam driven water pump which pumps cooling water over metal gauze for evaporative cooling. Painted green. It has two flywheels, one at each end of the crankshaft, with a flat belt pulley attached to one flywheel. Cooling tank of galvanised steel with Bartram stencilled on one side. In working order.
