The volunteer operated Centre was established in 1984 as part of Victoria's 150th Celebrations. The aim of the Centre is to make local history information accessible to everyone. The collection is housed in the former Ouyen Court House building.

Ouyen District History & Genealogy Centre Collection (1984)
The centre houses material collected from the southern part of the Mildura Rural City Council area (formerly the Shire of Walpeup). The photographic collection is a special feature, comprising approximately 2,500 black and white photographs. Microfilm of the early Ouyen newspapers from 1911, including some early copies from Underbool and Murrayville; oral history recordings; maps; books; district records and ephemera are also included. The centre has many local school and cemetery records. The collection also includes the following CDs and microfiche: Pioneer Index 1836-1888, Federation Index 1889-1901, Edwardian Index: 1902-1913, Great War Index: 1914-1920, Victorian Births to 1920, Victorian Deaths 1921-1985, Victorian Marriages 1921-1942, Immigration to Victoria 1852-79 Other records held: Australian Births, Deaths & Marriages; Some English Births, Deaths & Marriages; Ballarat Hospital Records; Ballarat and District Cemetery Records; Bendigo and District Shipping Records; Shipping Records for Victoria; Some Land and Police Records; Numerous other records
