About
Poowong Historical Group
With no obvious plan for the use of the former Poowong Methodist Church (1878) a group of interested people met to discuss its purchase. The year was 1981.
At a later meeting this group realized that much more Poowong history was ‘at risk’ unless action was taken to seek, collate and record items and information pertaining to the Poowong district and its people.
Historic minute books, photographs, letters, memoirs began to emerge.
Following the acquisition of the Methodist church the Poowong Historical Group renamed the building the ‘Pioneer Chapel’ as a memorial to the district pioneers. Classical Music concerts have been staged in the chapel for the past 15 years featuring the ‘Team of Pianists’ from Melbourne and their guest artists.
The unique interior of the chapel and its history is of great interest to tour groups and visitors; with the PHG members providing speakers. The group has provided photos and text for signs and plaques throughout Poowong.
A number of books have been published by PHG including ‘Pack Tracks to Pastures’ (2nd edition) by Ross Hartnell; ‘Poowong The First 30 Years’ (2nd edition )by Joseph White; and 1st edition ‘Arthur Henry’s Memoirs’. Many authors have been supported by access to our local archives. PHG continues to tell the Poowong story of times long past and more recent events. Numerous community publications are promoted by and available from the Poowong Historical Group.
The group meets each month in the former library room where its archives are stored at the Poowong Public Hall.
New members are welcome.
