Wangaratta High School Wangaratta, Victoria

Wangaratta High School is a public, coeducational secondary school situated in regional north-east Victoria, with a proud history beginning over 100 years ago when it opened its doors in 1909 under the name Wangaratta Agricultural High School. Wangaratta Agricultural High School was one five Victorian agricultural schools at the time. Since then the school has grown considerably, merging with Ovens College in 2007, forming the school as it is today.

Dead Man's Penny

Round metal single sided plaque depicting a helmeted man holding laurel wreath and a trident standing in front of a lion. Also includes the scroll with a coat of arms and a commemorative letter.

Historical information

A commemorative medal given to the next of kin to a deceased soldier in WWI. Colloquially known as a dead man's penny. Pte. Christopher F. Willcox was killed in the fist battle of the Somme in France on the 28th of July 1916 aged 21.

Historical information

This is the transition year as the Wangaratta High school magazine is renamed to Korrumbeia. Korrumbeia is Victorian aboriginal term meaning restful river/creek (Kurrabi; creek, Umina; rest, Beeia; river) This is a reference to the Ovens and King rivers merging in Wangaratta, and the fact that WHS houses are named after local waterways.
