Anna spent hours at the Ethnographic Museum near her high school recording traditional fabric designs in her notebooks.
She continued compiling these notebooks throughout her years in Memmingen Displaced Persons Camp (Germany). Anna brought the precious notebooks from Europe when she immigrated to Australia.

Woven on a table loom, this rug was made in the late seventies when rug weaving was popular.
Anita has used some yarn dyed with eucalyptus leaves. The pattern is a typically Latvian design called ‘rosepath’ and is used in the national dress of the Zemgale region in Latvia.

This cloth was woven in the traditional colours and patterns of the Nica region on the west coast of Latvia.
It was produced on a four shaft table loom using satin weave and an inlay pattern. It was copied from a sample seen in the Displaced Persons Camp in Memmingen, Germany, by the weaver's mother Anna.

This fabric length was an experimental piece for Anna.
It combines traditional Latvian patterns indicative of the Zemgale region from which she comes but utilises a contemporary colour scheme. It was woven on a hand made draw loom using 11 shafts.

Anna made this piece for an order for a national costume to be worn at Latvian functions.
Although it was made as a skirt length it was displayed as a wall hanging for many years. The pattern features the Northern Star or ‘Auseklis’ motif, one of the most popular motifs in Latvian design.

Anna made this belt for her daughter to wear as part of a Zemgale national costume when she finished high school.
The ornateness of this belt indicates that it is part of a woman's costume. It was woven on a hand-made back-strap loom using the ‘pick-up’ technique.
The belt utilises traditional Latvian patterns symbolising the ‘Morning Star’.
