This is the final 4 pages of the Scrap book Cat No 8225. Page 17. The article refers to Mrs Doreen Crawford having spent 12 years as Assistant Secretary at the Bendigo RSL Memorial Hall until 1967, on leaving this job she took on a Visiting Officers role with Legacy in McKenzie Street Bendigo where she be looking after and visiting approximately 200 War Widows in their own homes as well as Homes & Hospitals. Page 18 & 19. The two photos re building sites pertain to the construction of the War Widows Flats in Kangaroo Flat about 1971/72. Page 20a. The B & W photo shows the completed War Widows Flats in Kangaroo Flat in 1973. This was a project by the War Veterans Homes Trust and the Bendigo RSL. Page 20b. In 1987, Australia Post released Christmas stamps and two first-day covers (envelopes with stamps affixed) with the Carols by Candlelight theme. The top first-day cover has a red candle in a gold old-style candlelight holder, with five stamps showing groups of people who are singing and holding similar candles. A large '50th Performance of Carols by Candlelight, Melbourne, Vic 3000, 24 Dec 1987' mark is stamped on the envelope, which has a background image of the Myer Music Bowl, a candle and songbook. The lower first-day cover has a boy holding a red candle in his right hand and a songbook in his left, singing. Two stamps, different to the ones in the envelope above, are affixed to the envelope and consist of groups of people holding red candles and singing. One '50th Performance of Carols by Candlelight ...' cancellation mark is stamped. Mr P L Phillips operated a general store in Liebig Street in the early part of the 20th Century. He was a highly regarded member of the community. He was community minded and promoted support for local industry, advertising his locally made or sourced products. He and his wife were involved in the Congregational church and music. He was mentioned in The Warrnambool Standard as arranging an Honour Roll for the Aboriginal soldiers who fought in WW1, with two losing their lives. The Nestle Company has been a long established business and major employer in Warrnambool (Dennington) since the early 20th century until it was purchased by Fonterra around 2000. The significance of this item lies in the connection of a large company with a strong presence in Warrnambool, and a small business combining to promote a patriotic theme which would have been very important in the days proceeding the First World War. Made by the City of Port Melbourne for the demonstrations before and after the forced amalgamation by the Jeff Kennett State Government of the City of Port Melbourne with the Cities of South Melbourne and St Kilda to form the City of Port Phillip. First demonstation was against the City of Melbourne Act which excised 42% of Port Melbourne's rate base (Fishermens Bend) and so laid the groundwork for amalgamation afterwards because Port Melbourne could not survive on the remaining rates. The property was sold following Alfred Herbert’s death in 1929. Mrs Champion later owned the property. Charmandene Guest House was located on the beach front along Lover's Walk. This talk examines the background to Mahon’s expulsion from parliament and how it led to his being ostracised by his fellow Australians including his neighbours at Ringwood.
