Slide, Legacy Boys Camp 1956-7, 1957
Two black and white slides of boys in a dining room at a boys camp in 1956-57. Some are wearing paper hats. It is possibly at Blamey House in Kew, as other slides show camps at the residence during summer holidays. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Advertisement reads: CHINESE IMMIGRANTS Per ''Royal Saxon'' The public are informed that the ROYAL SAXON has this day arrived from Amoy with 300 Chinese Immigrants who have been carefully selected by Captain Charlesworth. The undersigned are prepared to enter into arrangements for indenting them for a period of five years. They comprise Shepard's, Farm and Domestic Servants, and a few Mechanics. These parties who have already made arrangements for the hiring them are requested to receive them personally or by their agents, without delay, as the vessel proceeds to Sydney on the 1st February. Bendigo Pottery was established in the 1850s, when Scottish migrant George Duncan Guthrie stumbled upon a local clay deposit and created a successful pottery business. Soon, it would rival the great Staffordshire potteries of 19th century England. It opened to tourists in 1971. Alex Gill began working at the Bendigo Pottery inn 1935 at the age of 13. Six months later he began an apprenticeship at the pottery and retired in 1986 as a Master Potter.Alex Gill works his potter's magic in Bendigo, Woman's Day Magazine Article by Heather Waby. This Spanish Mission style building first opened in 1917 and has been in continual use since as the Mission to seamen and later Mission to Seafarers at a location initially known as the extension to Flinders St near the Australian Wharf and later address known as 717 Flinders St. "The Extension Bond and Free stores" building which can be seen in the background can be identified on an aerial photograph of the area dated 1927.This image besides showing an early view of the current Mission to Seafarers building also features a glimpse of the early 20th C (Flinders St) Extension Bond ( Store ?) building positioned to make use of the Yarra-side docks known as the Australian Wharf.Positive photograph on medium format glass slide ; b & w image of the chapel and bell tower of 1917 Mission Building, extension to Flinders St. with a loaded horse-drawn dray or wagon being driven in the foreground. . In the background of image can be seen a section of a large warehouse or Bond store building, visible signage reads: "Extension Bond"in upper case letters. Magazine - 20 Light Horse magazine 1945
The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion. It was disbanded following the end of the war. 20th Light Horse was the only light horse regiment to serve overseas in WWII.Rare copy of Regimental magazine published on return from overseas service WW11Regimental magazine of the 20th Pioneer Battalion AIF prepared and published following the Unit's return from Dutch New Guinea, and change of title from 20th Motor Regiment in 1945..
