The booklet shows important aspects of the Shrine, 'one of the greatest of the war memorials erected in various parts of the world'. 'The purpose of this imposing structure is set out in the simple words quoted on the eastern wall of the Shrine of Remembrance itself- "This memorial was erected by a grateful people to the honoured memory of the men and women of Victoria who served the Empire in the Great War of 1914-18." The booklet outlines parts of the Shrine including the Battle Honour Discs, the Porticos, the Stone of Remembrance, the Inner Shrine, the Crypt and the Ray of Light. The document was in a file with other documents concerning the Shrine and it's history (01181 - 01191). Labelled with red pen S10 as part of an old archive numbering system.A record of the Shrine of Remembrance. There was an effort to record historical events for the "Archive Committee" which collected this and other documents relating to the Shrine together in a file (see items 01181 - 01191).A 16 page of booklet of buff paper in a cream cover describing the Shrine in photos and brown print.Stamped 'The Property of Legacy Melbourne' in purple ink. A brochure explaining Legacy's work and the facilities they provide. It is aimed at the widows to inform them of what is available to them and it outlines the times for classes for the children. The earliest copy in 1944 included the charter of Legacy and headings in red printing. 'Melbourne Legacy offers friendship and help to the dependants of our departed comrades.' Headings included: Help and advice to mothers or guardians; Mothers' Club; Senior Widows' Club; Housing and repairs; Legal advice; Medical, dental and optical care; Education, Employment, Camps and holidays, Christmas party, Residences, Junior Legacy groups. The notation H26 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. See other editions at 01447.A record of how Legacy portrayed itself to the widows and children in 1944,1959 and 1961/8. Gladys Reed was a member of the Ormond Choral Society c 1950. who performed plays and musicals the City of Moorabbin and she used these patterns to make clothes etc.for her family and the Choral Society. Madame Weigel who migrated to Melbourne in1877 with her husband Oscar; began publishing in 1878 and distributed paper patterns of the latest fashions, throughout Australia and New Zealand, She and Oscar became the first commercial manufacturers of paper patterns in Australasia, and to publish Weigel's Journal of Fashion (1880-1915) and Madame Weigel's Journal of Fashion (1915-1950). Madame Weigel had an enormous following of women who used her patterns across the generations, and across the life cycle from babies to 'matrons'. Madame Weigel died in 1940 aged 92 years. Finally, after 91 years of business and millions of patterns sold, Madame Weigel's paper pattern business closed in 1969.Gladys Reed was a member of the Ormond Choral Society c 1950. who performed plays and musicals in the City of Moorabbin and used these patterns for clothes etc for members of her family and the Choral Society.
