Administrative record - Text, Register of Life Governors, 1930s to 1950s
Handwritten list of Life Governorships awarded to various people from the RVIB during the 1930s until the 1950s. Entries include the name and address or township of recipients, and later a date column was included. No information is included on why a Life Governor was granted however this was usually in recognition for the funds donated to the institution. This amount was dependent upon the time of the contribution. In the Constitution and Rules section of the 1872 Asylum and School for the Blind Annual Report: Membership - Every Subscriber of 10s., and upwards per annum shall be a Member of the Institution, and every donor of 20 pounds and upwards, a Life Member. Auxiliary members who were appointed Life Governors were usually involved in helping organise some of the many fundraising activities, such as the Auxiliaries Annual Three Day Fair. A Life Governorship also meant that the person would have a vote when it came to some decisions made by the Committee of Management. RVIB Life Governors are listed cumulatively in the annual report until 1935 when, due to reasons of space, it was altered so that names appeared only in the year that they were granted. This continued until 1999/2000 when these were no longer awarded.Vinyl covered record book with alphabetical listing of some Life GovernorsR.V.I.B. Document - Former Conrad Heinze Butcher's Shop, 1872
Source National Trust: Conrad Heinz Butchers Shop - Happy Valley Road. This building was a weatherboard cottage evidently built in three stages with the front door in the central part, planked by three paned double casements, six-paned sash windows in the rear section; front section and timber veradah with scrolled vallance. The architect and builders are unknown. The outside doors to the cellar and the simple chimney breast remain a notable feature. The original owner was Conrad Heinz a former mayor of Bendigo who with two brothers opened a butcher's shop in the building in 1872. In 1883 he moved to Mt Korong Road Iron Bark, where he carried on another thriving business and built a substantial house close by. When Conrad Heinz left Happy Valley Road, one brother had died, but his widow carried on the first butchering business with the help of a lad and one of her three daughters. The little shop and residence stood for over a century on the spot, almost untouched by modern progress. The shop was closed for 70 years at most. It was demolished about 1982.Data Forms on the house on Corner of Happy Valley Road and Wells Street, Long Gully, now demolished. Document - Mine Managers, a glimpse at a large subject. From Ballerstedt to Buerger
Mine managers had a variety of roles. They were a go-between for investors or shareholders and were responsible for the effective utilisation of human and physical resources above and underground. From the early 1870's the Bendigo school of mines held courses and exams leading to a Mine Manager's Certificate. These certificates were awarded in 3 classifications:- 1st class certificate holders could manage any mine where large and expensive machinery was used. They needed knowledge and competence in areas such as surveying, underground plan drawing, ventilation, amalgamation, retorting and smelting. They must also be literate and numerate. 2nd Class:- able to manage any mine where steam machinery was in use. 3rd Class:- for mines where there was no steam machinery . They needed to have a good knowledge of whim, whip or windlass work. Conversations continued through to the 1920's about whether the requirement for a Managers Certificate should be made compulsory under amendment to the Mines Act 1883. There were also discussions of the minimum amount of mine experience applicants should possess.A research paper detailing the history of managers and their role in the Bendigo gold fields.
