Administrative record - Chemists' Prescription Books, late 19th and early 20th centuries
These three items are prescription books from a local Warrnambool chemist or chemists. The dates are 1895 to 1905, 1915 to 1918 and 1931 to 1935. The ledgers are untitled but at least one may come from the firm of R.F. Kennedy & Co, with this business situated in Timor Street. Richard Frank Kennedy commenced business in Warrnambool in 1880 as a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist and built up a large and important business. He died in 1903 but the business continued for many years with various chemists operating the business known as R.F.Kennedy and Co.These prescription books are of considerable interest as they contain many local names and the prescriptions give us an insight into aspects of community health early in the 20th century.1 A ledger of 502 pages with a hardboard cover, remnants of a spine with a red label, ruled pages with handwritten material in ink and an alphabetical index at the front. .2 A ledger of 502 pages with a tattered cover and leather binding and gold lettering on the spine. The pages are ruled with handwritten material in ink and an alphabetical index .3 A ledger of 500 pages with a hardboard cover. The spine is almost completely missing. Secretary, Mrs. S. Kellett; and Hon. Treasurer, Mrs. J. Lorimer. The society has had a useful career and been of great assistance to many families. One of its best workers was Mrs. G. Wharton. The present committee consists of Mrs. H. Collier (President), Mrs. Holdsworth (Vice-President), Mrs. Archer (Hon. Treasurer) Mrs. E. J. Dunn (Hon. Secretary), and Mesdames. Berry, Gillespie, Israel, Jellis, Kerr, Lilley, McCrea, Paton, Spring, Tappin, and Wishart." (Source: Barnard FGA, Jubilee History of Kew, 1910)The Kew Ladies' Benevolent Society was one of the most important women's groups in Victoria in the late 19th to mid-20th century. Journal - Schuss Vol. 20. No. 8 November - December 1954
Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski industry in Victoria. The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this issue include:- Page 260 - Summer at Falls Creek and Skyline - ARE you visiting Falls Creek during the summer months? Then don't forget to arrange through the Club office for a permit from the State Electricity Commission to use the Kiewa Road. And while at the office study the copy of the Commission's Kiewa Regulations which will be found on the notice board. We are sure that you will enjoy a stay at Skyline Lodge and a visit to the delightful terrain of Falls Creek and the High Plains equally well in summer as in winter; and the S.E.C. requirements are easy for members to comply with. Administrative record - DIGO Map Library and Repromat Review 2004, Geospatial Analysis Centre, Bendigo, 25 Oct 2004
Prior to the digital revolution the only medium by which cartographic information could be reproduced and distributed on mass was via printed media. The final negatives (repromat) used to produce the printed products were the culmination of a complex cartographic process and were therefore carefully preserved and stored. Preservation of the so-called final negatives enabled subsequent reprinting with minimal cartographic intervention. Since the arrival of the Land Headquarters Cartographic Company at Fortuna in 1942 the repromat for all products produced by the Australian Survey Corps were carefully stored. With the disbandment of the Army Survey Regiment in 1996 the Defence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation (DIGO) inherited that repromat archive. It was immanent that the support for film based printing was ending so on 25 October 2004 a review was required to determine the way ahead for the repromat and paper maps stored in the DIGO Map Libraries. Most of these maps were produced by the Royal Australian Survey Corps. This report is the result of that review. The report recommends the disposal of the repromat and the retention of single map copies.
