These two photographs of a contingent from the Army Survey Regiment lowering the Australian flag were taken on Australia Day in Kerang, Victoria on the 26th of January 1996. Most units of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) provide contingents to regional towns in their local area to assist in commemoration ceremonies on days of national significance, such as Australia Day, ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. This was most likely one of the last occasions before the closure of the Army Survey Regiment. Image 2C Barn at Montsalvat 1946 Built by Matcham and Sonia Skipper Designed by Justus Jorgensen The Alistair Knox Collection The Alistair Knox Collection is a series of mounted enlarged photos of mud brick houses and related subjects. The collection is understood to have been put together by Alistair Knox although it is the work of several unacknowledged photographers. For some years it was held by the Building Department of the former Eltham Shire Council and was then passed to our Society for safekeeping. Some of the photos have been used in Knox's books and from time to time some of them have been part of various historical displays. As far as we know there has not been a public display of the whole collection which numbers about forty photographs. The collection has been copied on to slides for the purpose of this meeting and to be retained as part of the Society's pictorial collection. Alistair Knox 1912 - 1986 is acknowledged as the founder of Eltham's mud brick building movement. Many of the buildings shown in the collection are of his design and he was also involved with the construction of several of them. Others are the work of his contemporaries and associates such as Peter Glass, Gordon Ford, and John Harcourt. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. Sandringham was originally part of the Shire of Moorabbin. On 28 February 1917, Sandringham was severed from Moorabbin and incorporated as the Borough of Sandringham. It was proclaimed a Town on 9 April 1919 and a City on 21 March 1923. This colour photograph, along with 12 others, was taken of the former Catholic Denominational School No. 238 (now a residence) in Coulstock Street, Epping. The remains of Mr. Ryan's blacksmith forge are at the rear of the building. The building was for sale by auction when these photographs were taken. The exact date of construction of the bluestone school building is not known but was possibly during the 1860’s, after construction of St. Peter’s Catholic Church nearby. In 1934 a new primary school was built alongside St. Peters Church in Wedge Street and the bluestone school building sold to the Worn family and converted into a residence. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Donovan Joynt VC. a long serving Legatee. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. When Legatee Joynt passed away on 5 May 1986, he was the club's oldest member and was an original member of the Legacy movement from 1923. The article includes his service to Legacy. It mentions his war service beginning with joining the Victorian Rifles in 1911. He served with the 8th Infantry battalion in Egypt and Europe. He was mentioned in despatches for conspicuous service in 4 famous battles, Ploygon Wood, at Guerudecourt, at River Lys defending Hazebrouck and when he won the VC at Chuignes near Villers-Bretonneux. See also his citation at 02024. He served again in the Second World War. It also recounts his employment and travels over the years. He was involved with Colart Studios and it grew into printing company WD Joynt & Co Pty Ltd which became Dominion Press. The article was part of an album of past presidents and prominent legatees from 1965 to 1989. These photographs are copies of original paintings by the Australian marine artist A V Gregory (1867-1957), also known as Arthur Victor Gregory. Gregory lived and worked in South Melbourne. He took over the Gregory Studio owned by his father, George Frederick Gregory, painting actively between 1899 and 1932. He usually signed his works as ‘A V Gregory’. Some of his original works have been sold for thousands of dollars. These mounted photographs, by A.V. Gregory, show both steam and sailing ships sailing in the Tea Race from China to London in 1872. The information included with the photographs has the following text: “Tea Clippers “ Well done Cutty Sark, by Bobbie Burns The CUTTY SARK and THERMOPYLAE. The start of the 1872 Tea Race from China to London. The “Cutty Sark” first away, followed closely by the “Thermopylae”, finally parting after several days’ company. On this race the “Cutty Sark” lost her rudder in the Indian Ocean, putting her hopelessly out of the race, and enabling the “Thermopylae” to pass her and reach London on 11th October, 115 days out, the “Cutty Sark” limping home seven days later. The credit of the race was given to the “Cutty Sark” by the shipping world. Copies of the pictures may be had from A.V.
