Melbourne Tram Museum
Negative, Wal Larsen, 1949
Black and white negative, of SW2 565 (St Kilda Beach) on the Moreland Road stub at Brunswick/Coburg. Has the tracks to Brunswick Depot in the background. On the side of the tram is a sign "Save to help control prices" Photo not in Wal Jack Melbourne album. Neg was in a Bright Methodist Church offering envelope - stored with negative file - has 1949 in pencil on the envelope. Wal Larsen was a Bright resident. Note on the background to the sign: Norman Abjorensen wrote in The Canberra Times about the election of Menzies in 1949 - see https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/6532529/the-election-which-shaped-australia-for-decades/ (Accessed 9-6-2021): Not known how the sign was sponsored. "The uncertainty was magnified by a range of post-war concerns and expectations that the expansionary 1949 budget brought into sharp focus. The nation was still war-weary, tired of austerity and impatient with rationing and controls; people wanted to spend their accumulated savings on the new household goods starting to appear in stores, and the taxation burden was resented. Further, rising inflation was a problem, with the Consumer Price Index rising by more than 10 per cent in 1949. It was little wonder Menzies' pledges to end rationing and "put value back in the pound" fell on such eagerly receptive ears."trams, tramways, w2 class, moreland road, tram 556 -

Negative - Photograph, Leader Publishing Co, Wingrove Cottage, c.1970
Wingrove Cottage is historically significant for its long association with Charles Wingrove, a prominent figure in Victorian local government, as secretary to the Eltham District Road Board and Shire Council from 1858 to 1904, and Shire Engineer and Secretary to the Heidelberg Road Board. The cottage was also used as the office of the Eltham District Road Board and Council for many years . One of the Shire's oldest dwellings, and one of the few surviving 19th century buildings associated with early Eltham and located in the original Eltham Village Reserve. Wingrove Cottage is considered historically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik and is registered on the Victorian Heritage Database. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years.Digital image 4 x 5 inch B&W Neg Print 20 x 25 cmsepp, shire of eltham pioneers photograph collection, eltham, wingrove cottage, charles wingrove, houses -

Journal, John Fraser, 1872
Journal written by John Fraser. Fraser's family migrated from Scotland in the 1850s on sailing vessel 'Countess of Cawdor' charted by a group of passengers for travel to Australia. John worked at the Victorian Woollen Mill, Geelong, and kept a diary of sample of cloth, people and happenings in Geelong from 1872. John was aged 6 months and 16 years when he began writing the journal. Book has a black cover which no longer covers all pages due to sample cloth and sheets of paper additionally being stuck into the book, making it too large/thick for the cover. Book shows signs of age particularly though fragile spine of the book and the discolouration of the internal pages. Book is starting to split at the spine, particularly from the bottom of the spine up and has visible signs of age on the black cover. Spots of missing leather are particularly visible on the front, centre right portion of the cover. Additional spots of missing leather dot the surrounding portions of the front and rear covers of the book.geelong, wool, textile design
