From Wikipedia: The MacRobertson Trophy Air Race (also known as the London to Melbourne Air Race) took place in October 1934 as part of the Melbourne Centenary celebrations. The race was devised by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sir Harold Gengoult Smith,[1] and the prize money of £15,000 was provided by Sir Macpherson Robertson, a wealthy Australian confectionery manufacturer, on the conditions that the race be named after his MacRobertson confectionery company, and that it was organised to be as safe as possible.[2] A further condition was that a gold medal be awarded to each pilot who completed the course within 16 daysClear glass sandwich plate, commemorating the Air Race from UK to Australia. Loan No. 27.-Notice of Intention to Borrow Sum of £ 15,000 for Permanent Works and Undertakings. - Notice is hereby given, that the Council of the Shire of Eltham proposes to borrow the sum of £15,000 on the credit of the municipal revenues of the president, councillors, and ratepayers for the said shire, such sum to be raised by the Issue of debentures in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Acts. 1. Maximum rate of interest that may be paid is £5/10/ per cent, per annum. 2. The purposes for which the loan is to be applied are: Construction of Sanitary Conveniences at Shire Office, Council's contribution towards costs of Dixons Creek Bridge, Construction of Mt. Pleasant rd., Construction of Cherry Tree rd. 3. The period of the loan shall be 10 years. 4. Moneys borrowed will be repayable by providing out of the Municipal Fund twenty half-yearly instalments of approximately £985/1/6 each, including principal and interest on the first day of October and the first day of April during the currency of the loan. The first Instalment shall be payable on the first day of October 1957. 5. Such moneys shall be repayable at the Commercial Bank of Australia Limited, Melbourne, or at the Council's bankers for the time being in Melbourne. Photos of a procession of widows and legatees to the Shrine in 1985 also of the church service in St Paul's before hand. The Legacy President Bannister is behind Legatee Geoff Swan holding the Legacy flag. The University of Melbourne choir is shown behind the Dean of St Paul's. The Melbourne Legacy Widow's Club president, Mrs Alma Sumner, spoke and also laid a wreath at the Shrine. One photo is of Pilgrimage Marshall Legatee Frank Burton. The pilgrimage was lead by a bag piper, Ian McKenzie and Standard bearer from Legacy Leadership Group (an older junior Legatee). Inside the Shrine the Shrine Trustee, Sir Alfred Kemsley stands with President Bannister and Widow President Mrs Alma Sumner and Legatees Conor MacGillycuddy and Alf Argent. Sometimes referred to as Widows' Sunday it is an annual event for Legacy widows, usually at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The church used for the service varies. These photos were in an album of photos from 1993. This is an example of an early merchandising item for the Warrnambool Tea & Coffee merchant, T. H. Easson.T. H. Easson was an early tea & coffee merchant in Warrnambool (1898-1973). The business was located at 125-127 Liebig Street and later at 103A Liebig Street. The business was also known at various times as Easson's "The Tea & Coffee Shop" and as Easson's Tea Rooms.A heart shaped, thin, soft metal book clip with a floral decoration pressed into the metal outer edge. This cassette was taped by the Rats of Tobruk Association. ABC war correspondent Chester Wilmot (1911-1954) pioneered the use of recording equipment in the field. He spent several months in Tobruk in 1941. In October 1941 the ABC Field Unit recorded a concert put on by 400 Australian soldiers in an ammunition cave. Wilmot’s introduction sets the scene and items feature individual and chorus items and a saxophone and piano accordion performance.This item is part of a collection of items owned by Arthur Lock, a member of the 2/23rd Battalion, an all-volunteer Second Australian Imperial Force which served as part of the garrison during the Siege of Tobruk, then at El Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo. It has particular local significance as the battalion was know as "Albury's Own" because a large majority of the battalion's initial intake of volunteers came from the Albury–Wodonga region. Award - Certificate and Medal, Royal Humane Society of Australasia Bravery Award for Stewart Aicken
On the 20th November 1952 SEC linesmen Stewart Aicken, Donald Odames and Desmond Veraker were working on the corner of Gisborne Road and Masons Lane in Bacchus Marsh. Veraker was in the air in a harness working on power lines when he was electrocuted. Aicken and Odames were on the ground and attempted to rescue him and revive him. Sadly Vereker died from his injuries. Aicken and Odames were later given bravery awards by the Royal Humane Society of Australasia for their actions.Royal Humane Society of Australasia certificate presented to Stewart Aicken to recognise the bravery of his actions on the 20th November 1952 in attempting to rescue fellow linesman Desmond Vereker from electrocution. It was awarded to him to accompany a bronze medal also awarded to Aicken for this act of bravery. The certificate and bronze medal are housed in a frame. Underneath the bronze medal is a black and white photograph of Aicken receiving the award from the Governor of Victoria Sir Dallas Brooks in 1953. Also in the photograph is an unidentified man and woman. The unidentified man is probably Donald Odames who was with Aicken on the 20th November 1952 and was also recognised for his bravery by the Royal Humane Society of Australasia.awards, accidents
