David Gordon Collection. The monument was created and erected by Mr. Barber of Dunolly in October 1919. It was unveiled by Brigadier General Brand C.B. C.M.G. D.S.O. at 2:30pm on Saturday November 8th, 1919. The Welcome Home Committee, formed 2nd July 1917, was largely responsible for commissioning the monument. Foundation members were Mrs. B. Patterson, Mrs J. Bock and the Misses P. Lemin, Violet Radnell, D. Dyer and Doris and Phoebe Bock. The Committee arranged 'Welcome Home' functions for each local soldier returning home after service in the First World War. Tarnagulla had a very large number of enlistments for its population. Angus M. Comrie is standing to the right of the Memorial with his daughter Mavis Comrie, and Nell Alexander. Mavis Comrie presented a new Union Jack flag to the Tarnagulla School on 25th July 1919 to commemorate Peace. Peace Medals were also distributed to the school students. The men in uniform at ground level are making up a Guard of Honour consisting of returned soldiers drawn from around the Tarnagulla district. They formed up at the Victoria Hotel, and there is a good photograph of them elsewhere in this collection. Possibly Portland Town Council. Thomas Must, a wealthy Sydney merchant arrived in Portland in 1845. In 1855 prospect was built for Must to a design by local architect George Mathewson. The two storey home was built in expansive grounds with sweeping views of Portland Bay and the township. The stuccoed house is of Regency/Italianate style with a single storey verandah and single storey kitchen wing. In 1878 the original posted verandah was replaced by new verandah and a conservatory to a design of architect Daniel Nicholson. Nicholson had also been responsible for the design of the Assembly Rooms at the London Inn. Thomas Must was active in the Portland Community. He was a Trustee of the Port Philip Savings Bank, a Justice of the Peace, Treasurer of St. Peters Church at Bridgewater and the first Chairman of the Portland Borough Council. Prospect was Thomas Must’s home until his death in 1905. The building has been considerably altered over the years and much of the original Italianate character has been lost. Subsequent owners include B. Cunningham, G.S. Beresford (who changed the property’s name to Waterford), and long-term Liberal Senator Sir Magnus Cormack. A badly damaged thick black hardcover Holy Bible with an embossed insignia on the front cover as well as lined patterns on the front and back covers. The front has stamped inside a circular insignia the words, 'British and Foreign Bible Society, Two Shillings and Sixpence' embossed in the middle. The end paper at the front has come away from the spine, there are marks and foxing inside. The text is clear. There is no spine and many pages are loose. Throughout the bible are several added pieces of handwritten notes on paper, small leaflets a newspaper article about the death of King George VI. There is no pagination. Included are two ribbon bookmarks, one yellow with 'Think of Me. 1870.' embroidered on perforated paper in blue cross stitch. The other blue one has 'Love' embroidered on perforated paper in coloured thread.
