Subscribers and Patrons will, we are sure, be equally gratified, with the Committee, at the great artistic success which the Society achieved in the colloboration with the Verbrugghen orchestra in the memorable performance of ''The Messiah.'' The great praise which Mr Verbrugghen bestowed on the tone quality of the vocalists and of their exceptionally clear enunciation and fine English was indeed very pleasing to all concerned, and was ample and full justification of Mr Frazier's methods and patient care in training the Choir in these particular points. Nor must Mr H W Gregory, the Acting Conductor's part be forgotten. He worked assiduously and earnestly, doing all possible to keep up the high standard of the Society's work. The programme presented to-night is also the result of his interpretation of the descriptive works of these modern composers, In bidding farewell to him at this Concert the Committee and members desire to express their thanks for the energy with which he has carried out the duties of Acting Conductor. We expect, at a very early date to the return of Mr W C Frazier to Bendigo. He is bringing, with him a choice of selection of the very latest and best of English and other part songs (both of the earlier composers and of the ultra-modern school) and patrons can look forward to a fine series of programmes. Handwritten extracts from the Bendigo Advertiser Monday July 24th 1933. First erected for 20 years. Mr Cook performs Opening. Approx. 400 people attended the opening on Sat 22nd. Expected that when run in, the ore will be crushed for 2/6 per ton. Consists of 10 heads, 1000 lbs each. Boxes are of Homestake pattern with wooden horses of special timber and iron guides. Copper plate tables of ample area provided. Floors are of concrete and so graded that all washings - -. Expected later to expand to 30 head. A 114 H P Ruston-Hornsby crude oil engine is provided with a friction clutch to facilitate easy starting, and will be capable of driving the battery when it is extended. Those who attended the opening were subsequently the guests of the Company at light refreshments. These plans were associated with Mr Andrew Wood, a contract builder who worked in the 1920s and built many Californian bungalows in Surrey Hills and surrounding suburbs. Andrew Wood was born in Chiltern in 1861 to Andrew and Ellen Wood (MS: Green). His father had emigrated from Falkirk, Scotland. As a young man Andrew worked as a carpenter in the mines in South Africa (c 1899). He married Eleanor Agnes Stuchbery in Hamilton, Victoria in May 1901. They had 5 children - Doris (M Roberts), Robert Andrew, Donald Allen, Jean (M Cowan), and Gwenyth (M Bray). The first 2 children were born in Hawthorn; the other 3 in Surrey Hills. The family home at 286 Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills (on the corner of Middlesex Road) was built by Andrew. Andrew died in 1940; Eleanor died in 1977, aged 100 years. After Eleanor's death the house was sold and demolished. Surrey Lighting was established on the site. Gwenyth May Wood (3 May 1917, Surrey Hills - 5 Jan 2004) married Leslie David Charles Bray (1921-1983). Gwenyth was the donor's mother.
