The buildings are recorded in the Hobsons Bay Heritage Study Amended 2017 (Heritage Overlay No. HO219) and notes the following: Historically, they are among the oldest shops in Nelson Place and illustrate the early development of the street during the most prosperous period of the Port. They are also important for their associations with Thomas Mason. Thomas Mason, who owned these two shops, each of stone, brick and four rooms until c1880, was one of the most significant men in the early history of Williamstown. In 1858 he ran the two shops jointly with Benjamin Culley, a draper and clothier (Refer to 55 Cecil Street). Culley and Mason's partnership dissolved and after a brief period as the Ship Inn, in 1859, the two shops were now leased to various other businessmen, some of the longest standing being Matthew Suffren, a watchmaker; Edward Bailey, a chemist; a stationer, George Divers; Henry Douglas a plumber and Henry Linton, a boot maker (Refer to 22 James St, 46-48 and 50 Stevedore Street). In 1880 Mrs. Mason had assumed ownership which she retained until the shops were retaken by the executors of Sutton's estate (1890). Given the property's description in the period 1857-59 as a store of wood and stone and in 1860, as two shops of brick and stone, it is probable in that year that the whole premises was rebuilt. Thomas Mason, originally a Londoner, arrived in the colony in 1841. On 24 August 1844 he took charge of the signal station, and subsequently the light- house (then a lamp in a wooden tower), for a further five years. In `Port of Many Prows', Wilson Evans recounts a tale which indicates that Mason may not have been entirely conscientious in this role. After this he took up storekeeping and auctioneering but gave up the shopkeeping in 1858. He was a member of the first Williamstown Council and its chairman no less than four times (1856, 1860, 1862, 1864). He represented Williamstown in the Legislative Assembly in 1860-61 (6). Andrew Rider's photograph of Nelson Place, taken c1866 shows these shops as the most substantial in the block and adorned with a slender timber verandah. nelson place, 151-157 nelson place, thomas mason -

It consisted of a shop, a blacksmith's forge and wheelwright, and was located to the east of the blacksmith's forge in Main Street. Between 1874 and 1892 Francis Timmons operated a clothier and drapers business in this building.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. ... Mrs. Jeremeas. Photo 1883. Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Various signage on second storey front and side, and on verandah, including: Hall of Commerce. Boots & Shoes. Men and Boy's Clothing. Furniture and Bedding. J. Carter Outfitter. Basham & Bradley. Milliners and Dressmakers. General Drapers ...Bacchus Marsh Express of 7 November 1874 reports that this building was designed and erected by Mr Jeremiah Ryan for Mr H. G. Salter, draper. Mr Salter gave the name of "Hall of Commerce" to the building, a term in common usage at the time. The building was of a substantial size. In the Express of January 4 1879 Messrs Basham and Bradley advertised a wide variety of goods including drapery, millinery, ready-made clothing, boots and shoes and furniture. At the front of the building was the first pavement in the township. This photo forms a contrast with the photograph (also taken by Stevenson & McNicoll in 1883) of Timmons Clothier and Draper, but depicting an older building from 1857. This business was on the verge of closure, Mr Timmons conducting his business as a travelling salesman, taking his goods by horse and cart to outlying districts. The image provides an example of the growing scale of retail development in Bacchus Marsh in the late nineteenth century. This photograph is a record of a prominent commercial building that has undergone substantial change. The image shows the original upper floor which was destroyed by fire in 1928.The building retains its usage as a commercial premises.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Elsie Jennings, an Angus descendant, recalled in a letter to LDHS that her uncle had run a draper's shop at this site. ...Shire of Grenville Hall and Angus shop, Sussex Street, Linton. Dating the photograph: The photograph can be dated to after 1887, when John Angus purchased the shop building (originally owned by Thomas Austin) from B. N. Dodd. 'W. Angus': From 1887 until the late 1890s the shop was run by John Angus' wife Wilhelmina Angus, who often advertised her business in the local newspaper, the 'Grenville Standard' (see photograph of advertisement, Registration no. 2019-346). It is not known when Mrs Angus retired, but it is understood that her son William then took over the shop around 1901. Elsie Jennings, an Angus descendant, recalled in a letter to LDHS that her uncle had run a draper's shop at this site. (See letter in "Linton - Township History - Recollections and reminiscences' file.) In 1905, Will Angus advertised that he had moved his business to the building on the corner of Sussex and Clyde Streets (later this became J. H. Barr's drapery shop.) It is not clear whether the "W. Angus" in the sign refers to Wilhelmina Angus or to William Angus.Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph, which has been mounted on white card. The photograph shows a two-storey brick building, and next to it a double-fronted shop. The two-storey building is the original Grenville Shire Hall, built in the mid 1860s. The fence outside it is being used to post notices. Two large pine trees are between the fence and the building. The smaller shop next to the hall has a verandah supported by round timber posts, and signs across the front of the verandah read "Tailor" and "W. Angus". Two men engaged in conversation with each other are standing to the left under the verandah. There is a flagpole attached to one of the gate posts of the hall, and there is a telegraph pole in the street in front of the hall.w. angus, william angus, wilhelmina angus (née statemann), buildings, shire of grenville hall, shops, shire hall, town hall -
