One sheet on double foolscap, typed carbon copy and the other on a foolscap sheet with out the company's claim amount. Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co. Bell Punch No. D382. A heavy nickel plated steel ticket or fare strip cancelling / registering mechanism used on Melbourne cable trams. When a fare was sold, the bell would ring advising the passenger that their fare have registered. "An ingenious device resembling in principle the ticket punch of a railway porter. It is carried by the conductor who wears pinned to his coat a 'trip-slip'. He punches this once for every fare received; the action is simultaneously registered on a dial inside the punch and bell rings to appraise the passenger of the fact. The punch is provided with a patent lock, the secret of which is known only at headquarters and effective system of check is thus secured." (" A story of the Melbourne Cable Tramway System" - page 54). Used by the MT&O and MMTB until 1922/23 when replaced by the check ticket system. Manufactured by the Railway Register Manufacturing Company. Lock code IDMA. From an email from Rod Atkins 29/7/2019: This Stevenson six widow saloon horse tram No 46 is fairly standard. The horse cars did not have wheel skirts like the cable trams 6 and 8 window cars. Sitting at the terminus in High Street at Parkhill Road at the gates of the Boroondara General Cemetery ready for its return trip to Richmond. The tram is being run one man. Note the location of gates, pay as you enter the front step. The driver has a conductors bag around his neck and waist. No conductor present in the photo. His uniform is classic Company issue. He is wearing a Tunic and vest! And early issue cap with a white band. Date: around circa 1900 as the clock tower, brick wall and cast iron fence are all in place and the car number is faded out. Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. Ltd Rules and Regulations by which all operational staff were to abide by. Provides separate sections of rules for Gripmen and Conductors, with Special rules for both roles, collection of fares and use of Bell Punch, transfer and check tickets, Collectors (Conductors acting as collectors on the dummy or grip car), signalmen and shunters. Printed by Sands & McDougall. Date of issue has been damaged by silverfish - Mr H A Wilcox was appointed Secretary in 1909, becoming General Manager in the Tramway Board which succeeded the private company in 1916. Rule 76, page 21 allows for the wearing of the Australian Tramway Employees Association union badge. The Union was recognised by the Company in August 1912 and the wearing of Union badges on watch chains was permitted. A possible date for the document is 1912. Photo, from The Age used in item 7194 reporting on the closure of the St Kilda - Brighton tramway from Elwood depot to Middle Brighton on 1/7/1957. Photo shows Victorian Railways tram No. 35 at St Kilda Railway station with the privately operated bus behind. The service was operated by the Eastern Suburbs Omnibus Service using some half-cab buses. The bus is a Leyland OPS4 built in 1950 and subsequently sold to Eastern Suburbs Omnibus service in 1957. Was it on hire to the Brighton bus company? Yields information about replacement of trams on the St Kilda Brighton line by buses in July 1957. Printed "ticket" for fund raising - The Australian Tramways & Motor Omnibus Employees' Association Victoria Most Popular Conductress competition - for Mrs. Winifred Gibson of Preston depot. Funds were in aid of the Red Cross Prisoner of War Fund. Has the name of H. Nott, Hon Secretary, Tram depot Malvern. Tickets were donated to the Red Cross fund by the Proprietors of Black and White Cigarettes. Has on the rear an advertisement for the cigarette company. Provides a report on a conference between the MTOCo and five City Councils held on 17 Aug 1892 about the method of valuation which councils levied rates for the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. The company appealed these. Looks as case law in the UK and whether under the Victorian Acts this would be applicable. Reported by the Chairman, J H Maddock on 27-9-1892.
