Yields information about one of Ballarat's bogie trams prior to its conversion to a one-man-type car.Digital image from the Wal Jack Ballarat Album of Ballarat 38 prior to conversion to a one-man type tram in Sturt St climbing the hill to Lydiard St. No details as to photographer and date. The tram was converted to one man operation in 1953, but was banned as such by the union at the time. Yields information about Ballarat tramcars in 1956.Letter, one typed foolscap sheet, from SEC Ballarat Office to Wal Jack on SEC Letterhead, dated 27 Feb 1956 replying to Wal's letter of 25 Feb, advising of the mileage of 16, 18, 24 and 31 in Ballarat, the disposal of tram 16, additional bogie trams from Geelong and the ban of the use of 38 as a one man tram. Photograph shows tramway traffic inspectors looking at Gibson ticket machine that has caused a strike at the Footscray bus depot over the use of one-man buses. Details of the event are give in the Melbourne Herald 20/11/1953 - see first reference for the Trove link. The strike also stopped the tram services. Does not appear to have track brakes. Has "Suttons Pianos & Players." advertisement on roof side. This ad was used as the basis for the roof ads on the Horse Tram. Photocopy of a newspaper report in The Age, 9-9-1998, titled "Trams safety report 'a joke'", written by Lyall Johnson, Transport Reporter, about a report made by consultants for the PTC about the safety of the drivers cab in one-man trams. Notes the consultants did not inspect the tramcars themselves. Quotes Union Secretary Lou DiGregorio, PTC Spokesman Russell Coffey. The Malvern depot was refusing to drive the trams.
