This article reports on the latest fad - snow shoe lessons, being conducted at Falls Creek by Ms Jenny Bolwell for the Forests, Conservation and Lands Department in 1986. The two hour "shuffle" took participants up into the sub-alpine area of the village. The snow shoe lessons had been held for the previous two seasons. Falls Creek Snow Resort is on the Bogong High Plains in north east Victoria. It competes with other Australian snow resorts during Winter. This folder was created in the 1990s.Falls Creek began during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The first Mt Dandenong State School opened in a shed on the property of William Ferguson on the corner of Blythe and Old Coach Roads. The first teacher was Miss Ethel Gruber who opened the school on May 11th, 1897. It wasn’t until 1901 that the school shifted over the road into an old school building that was moved up to the new site from Ringwood. All the buildings were demolished to make way for a new school that opened in 1991. Up until the later 2000s snow fell at the school several times a year. This photo is part of the Fred Griffith Photographic Collection documenting his time with the Australian Alpine Club and the formation of the Albury Ski Club. Frederick Charles “Fred” Griffith was born in Albury, NSW on 2 March 1910. Educated in Albury and Geelong Grammar. Beginning in 1927 he spent many years working first as a jackeroo and on a range of prominent pastoral and merino stud properties in NSW and Queensland. In 1935 he repurchased his former family property “Toonallook", Bowna, NSW and developed it to be the largest Romney Marsh stud in the world, exporting rams to Argentina. He introduced many innovative practices on his property including rabbit control measures and aerial crop dusting. He was an active member of the Albury Show Society and in 1949 established the Albury Sheep Show. Fred was also the Albury representative on the Graziers’ Association Council for over 30 years. He became a life member of both the Albury and Commercial Clubs. Fred’s greatest hobby was snow skiing. His first visit to the snow was to Kosciusko in 1919. The Albury Ski Club was formed in 1935 and Fred was an inaugural member. In 1949 they were granted a site at Falls Creek to build their own lodge. Fred guaranteed the Club for finance from the Bank of NSW. The first portion of the prefabricated building was constructed in Albury. It was transported to Falls Creek on the back of Fred’s truck and erected in one day. This was the bathroom section and the rest was completed in 1950. The original lodge was burned down in 1952 and a new one built the following year. In 1955, Fred also built the Bowna Lodge for his family in partnership with David Fairbairn. He became head of the North Eastern District Skiing Association (N.E.D.S.A.) and successfully applied to run the Australian Ski Championships. Fred also inaugurated children’s races at Falls Creek and ran them for about 20 years. He also formed the company “Falls Creek Ski Tows”. In 1956 Fred along with a group of key people selected the site for Thredbo Village. Fred and his brother sold Toonallook in sections between 1951 and 1974. He moved to Albury and set up as a landscape gardener and fencing contractor. The photograph held by the Historical Society is a copy of the original. A former pupil of Olinda State School contacted the Society with the following information: The photograph was taken in 1951. The teacher is Keith Curley who was Head Teacher from 1951 - 59. The depth of the snow that year was 9 inches out in the open and the photo was taken either by The Age or the Sun. Joyce Snow was born in Avenel and came to Beechworth at the age of twenty-three. She grew up at Bundarta, a place just out of Shepparton. Her father was a soldier who was part of the 37th Battallion while her mother's family were some of the pioneers of Beechworth--the Duracks. She finished school at about thirteen years old, did a correspondence course, and when she was old enough, she went training for nursing. Joyce was a trained nurse at the old Mooroopna Base, Hospital. She working at a Hospital in Shepparton when Manpower sent her to Beechworth. She arrived at Beechworth in 1943 at a train in Wangaratta. She had been a nurse in Beechworth for more than seven years. She got married in Beechworth and had three children, two girls and one boy. By the time of her third child, she studied a one year supplementary course on Psychy at May Day. Joyce had nursed prisoners of the First World War. She shared about the differences of medical practice back then in comparison to now. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Joyce Snow's account of her life in the early 20th century is historically and socially significant to the cultural heritage of the region. She gave information about the settlements and life of the prisoners of First World War, the early forms of entertainment, education system and societal roles. She also mentioned changes in employment and migrant communities. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved.This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. The third Delley's Bridge, built in 1940 with a curved deck, was situated slightly upstream from the previous bridge. Though it was subject to snow cover from time to time, raging floodwaters were not a threat after Bellfield Dam was built in the 1960s.The picture shows a curving bridge with a wood and wire railing. Thomas John Barton was born in 1836 in Gloucestershire and after his father died in 1850 arrived in Melbourne in 1852 along with his mother, adult sisters, younger brothers, his uncle, his uncle's wife Suzanna and their family. Thomas tried gold mining at Woods Point but found it too difficult. He then partnered with Ewen Hugh Cameron to provide the miners with meat. In 1864 they purchased a plot of land in Marysville and set up a butchers/abattoirs and from there began their business of taking supplies to the miners at the nearby Woods Point and Jamieson goldfields. In 1865 the business was firmly established and Thomas married Selina Croker at Heidelberg and brought her back to Marysville. Their first home was 'The Chestnuts', which included the store, and was situated on the town side next to the Steavenson River. Sadly, in 1876 Selina died of complications after giving birth to their sixth child. Thomas was in need of a nanny to care for his six children, including the newborn baby, and so he employed Emily Ada Sparke, who is the eldest daughter of the local school teacher. Thomas and Emily subsequently marry in 1878 and they go on to have a further 10 children over the next several years. Thomas assisted in the establishment of the first school in Marysville in 1870 and remained a very active member of the community including as a Councillor for the Shire of Healesville, Shire President and he was also appointed as a Justice of the Peace. Thomas died in Carlton in 1911. Erith Lane would have been named after Eliza Erith, the wife of Thomas Hand of Mountain Grange. The house made of slabs and bark pictured (centre) is where the family lived before Mountain Grange was built. Mabel Hand, Thomas and Eliza's youngest daughter stated that she was born in the bark hut in 1881 and they moved into the new home the same year. Cherry Farm, the roof visible behind the centre building, was the home of William Hand, son of Thomas and Eliza. Swedish snow shoes for horses were imported by Martin Romuld in 1937. They were used by Tom Fitzgerald's packhorses but not on the State Electricity Commission of Victoria's horses as a S.E.C.V. 'horse expert' claimed the horses would break their legs.Tom Fitzgerald lived on the Omeo Highway near Shannonvale and brought cattle up to the Bogong High Plains. He would have travelled in the snow during the year visiting his hut and maintaining his equipment. The S.E.C.V. worked on the Bogong High Plains all year round during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Mt Bogong is the highest mountain in Victoria. The Staircase Spur track to its top starts at Mountain Creek Road going through forest and continuing above the snow line to grass land.
