Christmas card made from white stippled cardboard with a serrated edge, folded centrally with a photo of Rx and R class locomotives on the front of the Adelaide to Melbourne Express at Adelaide Railway Station c1900. The train later became known as The Overland. The first two carriages are Mansard Roofed Carriages. The photo has been printed as an illustration and then glued to the front of the card. On the inside of the card is a Greetings message from the Council and Members of the South Australian Division of the Australian Railway Historical Society. A newsletter covering the activities of Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club. The October edition covers a 2007 reunion of former Junior Legatees. Generally The Answer includes photos of events, a notice from the Chairman of the Widows' Committee, dates of meetings, possible day trips and theatre outings, and cruises. The ladies were welcome to attend many activities including, swimming exercise classes, stamp group, craft, walking group, Monday Concerts, plus the annual fete and Christmas concert. The first edition of the newsletter was in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine but the distribution was limited, they changed to a 4 page newsletter format to reach more of the widows. The September 1992 edition of the Melbourne Legacy newsletter was the first to be called 'The Answer'. The name comes from the verses that guides the work of Legacy - 'In Flanders Field' and 'The Answer'. She was responsible for the whole demonstration, from choreography, designing costumes, and training the girls. She commented: 'Our big number this year is Toyland'. 'We do everything on a shoestring - costumes are remade and dyed from year to year, masks repainted. Wives of Legatees, senior girls and mothers all help to make the costumes and props.' 'Once the show starts I don't say a word. The girls find their own places on the floor and perform to the music. These children without fathers have to learn self-reliance and confidence, and this is a good start.' June Bronhill was starring in 'The Merry Widow' and proceeds from the first performance at the Tivoli Theatre on 18 July was being donated to Legacy. The legacy girls were, from left, Gail Horton 8, Claire Ryan 8, June Bronhill, Diane Riseley 12, and Gail Jubb 12 years old. There were other articles in the scrap book about The Merry Widow, and the performance raised £2,000 for Legacy. The newsletter from December 1959. The cover featured a Christmas etching of angels and shepherds by Rembrandt. Articles included a critique of the annual demonstration, the judo classes run, and happenings at the residences. A newsletter published by Legacy in a similar format for many years from 1942 though this is a shorter format compared to some years. Ringwood Technical School was the first co-educational technical school in Victoria. In 1963, 229 Form 1 students were enrolled, being the biggest student intake so far in the school’s 5 year history, bringing the school population close to 700 in Forms 1 to 4. Extensions to the 3 year old building were under way to cope with the increasing student numbers. Experienced teachers came from all parts of the State to teach in this unique school, The school was known locally as Ringwood Tech School, Ringwood Tech, Ringy Tech, Ringers Tech, The Tech and RTS. It began in 1958 with Form 1 boys, then Form 1 girls in 1959 at a separate campus. Both groups were hosted at district schools until 1960, when the new school was completed at Heathmont. It was the first co-ed technical school in Victoria. The school underwent several name and role changes in later years, and finally closed in 2003.This is the parent record for the large archives collection of Ringwood Technical School (later Eastern Secondary College), consisting of class and group photos, trip and other photos, and various documents and magazines from the school's beginning in 1958 to its closure in 1993. Individual items fall in the VC Reference Number range 21001 - 22899 and where possible are grouped by year. Rose Series postcard No. P 10526 titled "Swanston St looking south Melbourne", from just north of Collins Stret. Trams in the view are S class No 164 and W class No 381? On the left side is a cable tram in Collins Street waiting to cross Swanston Street. An early MMTB bus is also heading south in Swanston Street with motorcycle and side car behind it. The cable tram signal is visible just to the left of the bus. This signal would continue to control all tram movements through the intersection until the insulation of modern motor traffic lights around 1929. On the left of photo is the imposing Queen Victoria building demolished in the mid 1960's to make way for the City Square.
