A celebration of the Tawonga hall's 50th anniversary was held at the hall on 15th January 2011. This is a record of those who attended and a reprt from the newspaper of the up-coming event.The district of Tawonga consists mostly of farmers and their families who socialised at the local hall on many occasions. One former prefect wore his old blazer, which must have shrunk in the wardrobe but reminded many of us of those carefree times at school.. Best of all was the re-kindling of memories, and renewing and consolidation of friendships started at the school all those years ago. The 2/8th Armoured Regiment was raised in June 1941 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel W G Hopkins with officers and men selected from the wider AIF in Victoria. The regiment trained in newly arrived M3 General Grant tanks at Puckapunyal before moving north to Singleton, then the Wee Waa plains. The regiment sailed for New Guinea in April 1943 and carried out mobile defence to airfields at Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Dobadura and Popondetta. The regiment returned to Australia in February 1944 and disbanded as an armoured regiment and retrained as Nos 41, 42 and 43 Landing Craft Companies. A book written by Myann Burrows and published by Brisbane Legacy about the Legacy children's residence Moorlands. It was written to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the first children to arrive at Moorlands Legacy's War Orphans' Home. It operated for 23 years until 1969. The children labelled themselves Moorlands Kids and had frequent reunions and contact with each other over the years. The house was initially built in 1892 and during World War 2 it served as General Blamey's headquarters. It was purchased in March 1945 though the Army didn't vacate until January 1946. Miss M Netterfield was appointed matron and Mrs Dethridge as sub-matron. In July 1946 17 boys moved in and by end of August there were 28 children. It was officially opened by Governor of Queensland, Sir John Lavarack on 27 February 1947 which Legatee Savige spoke at, there is a photo in the collection.
