The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion. ‘A’ Squadron 8/13 Victorian mounted Rifles hosted a special screening of the movie “The Lighthorsemen” at the Regent Theatre Albury on 11 September 1987. The official party included the Area Commander Albury-Wodonga Military Area, Honorary Colonel 8/13 VMR and Officer Commanding ‘a’ Squadron 8/13 VMR. The VMR Heritage Troop mounted a Lance-Guard in the theatre foyer and the Albury City Band played prior to the screening. Following Federation a number of companies of Victorian Mounted Rifles were consolidated to form the 8th Light Horse (VMR). In 1912 the regiment was re-titled 16th Light Horse (Indi Light Horse). The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. This model of a horse drawn Small Wheel Lorry replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public during the 1880's and early 1900's. A model of a Small Wheel Lorry with a brown short two spoked wheeled wooden tray with low sides drawn by a cream coloured horse. Swedish snow shoes for horses were imported by Martin Romuld in 1937. They were used by Tom Fitzgerald's packhorses but not on the State Electricity Commission of Victoria's horses as a S.E.C.V. 'horse expert' claimed the horses would break their legs.Tom Fitzgerald lived on the Omeo Highway near Shannonvale and brought cattle up to the Bogong High Plains. He would have travelled in the snow during the year visiting his hut and maintaining his equipment. The S.E.C.V. worked on the Bogong High Plains all year round during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. H. Rider Haggard (1856-1925) (Sir H. Rider Haggard), a British author, wrote fiction and non-fiction works and had letters and articles published in newspapers and journals. His novel, Heart of the World, was an adventure set in Mexico. This book is part of the Pattison Collection at Flagstaff Hill. The book was published in 1895 by the British firm George G Harrap & Co. Ltd. of London, a firm that specialised in high-quality publishing with many of the books containing fine line drawings.The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes.
