As a 13 year old David Staig was inspired by a person who designed and flew a wooden bi-plane. He went on to design and build his own. His contribution to aviation is explained in the manuscript. A very damaged, stained red antique hardcover book for girls with the title printed in gold lettering in the middle of the front cover. There is a gold outlined drawing of a girl sitting looking out of a window. There are red flowers and green leaves decorating the cover. The spine has the title printed in gold letters with red flowers and green leaves.On the front right side end paper is an inscription for a Sabbath School award dated 1882. The frontispiece balck and white illustration is of a girl sitting at a table at a fair. Tissue paper protects it. The title page has the title, author Howe Benning as well as publisher details. 296Pp. Throughout are black and white illustrations. There are four pages at the back are lists of Recent Gift Books published by the Religious Tract Society. These 34 photographs were taken at Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the School of Military Survey (SMS) at Latchford Barracks, Bonegilla in May 1990. The two RASvy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. The Flag handover and speeches were held in SMS’s Café Slater recreation/morning tea area. A daughter of Henry Francis and his wife Mary (née Hepbuirn or Hepburn), Harriet married George Knight of Spring Vale (now Pittong) in 1900. Harriet is shown in this photograph with her two sons - William, born 1903, and George, born 1905. Harriet and George Knight also had a daughter, Victoria May, born 1901, who died in 1904. Harriet's husband George died in 1907. After she was widowed Harriet continued to run their farming enterprise. As part of this she ran a butchery, providing meat to people living in the Pittong district. Softball was held at Beischer Park Strathdale, sailing was most likely held at Lake Eppalock, rifle shooting at Wellsford Rifle Range and tug-of-war at Fortuna. The venues for basketball, golf, squash and volleyball are unknown. The two RA Svy units took turns each year to host the event. Personnel from the ASR’s Detachment located at Bonegilla were part of the SMS’s teams. History of Saint Margaret's Church Eltham beginnings to 1888. Throughout this foundation period the community grew in numbers and influence within the developing district of Eltham. The minister's and lay readers appointed to Saint Margaret's are indentified and their contribution discussed. The significant events of the establishment of a temporary chuch and then a permanent church, the opening and closing of a denominational school, the construction of a parsonage, libraries and Sunday school are all examined. The key to the success of this faith community during its foundation years was the initiative and resourcefulness of its laypersons. - back cover. He performed on the University's historic Erard Grand Concert piano on stage in Founders Hall, describing it as "absolutely amazing.' The instrument was 93 years old and hadn't been played for more than eighty years. An audience of 500 were entertained with pieces by Schubert and Bach for the first half of the program and Waltzes, Mazurkas, and Polonaises by Chopin after the interval. A feature of the show is Lola's celebrated Spider Dance which was acknowledged many years ago by the crowd throwing gold nuggets onto the stage. From Left to Right: Margaret Watson, Hugh Brown, Frank Anderson, Jean Brown, Mary Anderson, Bill Armstrong Zillah Jean Brown, known as Jean, was the granddaughter of a pioneer of the district, Mr Hugh Brown. Jean married Francis Anderson in October 1930. Hugh Brown (1830-1930), born in Ireland, arrived in Adelaide in 1855 and in the Mordialloc district in 1856. Mr Brown brought land in 1866 and built his farmhouse “Pine Vale” in 1870 near the site of the present Mordialloc Secondary College (then part of the property) and extended his property when the swampland was made open for selection in 1871. The property was a market garden and orchard. Hugh Brown married Zillah Baxter (1866) and they had six sons, five living to adulthood. The Brown family increased their land holding until they held a major part of the farmland between Mordialloc Creek to almost the Aspendale Railway Station.
