The Long Room was built between 1712 and 1732 to house the collections of books and manuscripts which had been growing since Trinity College's foundation in 1592. The staff faced the problems of space, access, and above all preservation. The 2 cannons in the gardens were acquired by Mr Arthur Brookes, popularly known as 'Empire Brookes'. They were from a British vessel used during the Crimean War and were originally placed in the grounds of the Guildford Road Recreation Oval. The Dimmick Gateway was erected in 1950 by the citizens of Camberwell in memory of Cr William Dimmick, JP, Mayor of Camberwell, 1935-1936 and a Councillor from 1934-1947. There is a photo of him in Mayoral robes in the City of Boroondara Library Service collection. Cr Dimmick was commonly called Roy.Black and white photo of the Dimmick Gateway in Surrey Gardens. The gateway is built as if it was designed to have a fence attached but there is none. There are 2 tall central pillars and an arched bridge to 2 smaller pillars. It appears to be constructed from a variegated slate material. There is a light on the top of each of the tall pillars and also a plaque. To the RHS of the photo is part of the Surrey Shrine, skirted by 2 cypress trees. Eustace Halley Coghill lived in Surrey Hills on the corner of Wandsworth Road and Chertsey Street. His home was moved to Phillip Island (photo in the collection). This is the sixth volume of his diaries transcribed and published by his daughter Elspeth Carey, who spoke to Surrey Hills Historical Society regarding her father's life. The Ballarat School of Mines was the first School of Mines in Australia and was established in 1870. 22 page booklet titles 'The Ballarat School of Mines: A Statement of the Objects and Resources of the School.' The book has a number of illustrations including the interior of the Ballarat School of Mines Laboratory, and the former Ballarat Circuit Court House. It includes a statement of the formation, progress, and present position of the School of Mines, Ballaarat. The image of the Ballarat School Mines Assay Room shows assay furnaces, crucibles, chimney, and teacher Joseph Flude on the far right. This room is now is a building known as the 'Old Chemistry Building'. Martin Malone acquired a pharmacy business in Bacchus Marsh in December 1932. The business operated from premises in Main Street. He acquired the pharmacy from a Mrs A. E. Grant who briefly operated the business during 1932 after being a pharmacist in Pakenham East for a number of years. In 1936 the pharmacy moved to 143 Main Street. Martin Malone sold the pharmacy to F. Benallack in September 1947 and moved to Canterbury in Melbourne to continue his pharmacy career. The prescription books in this collection encompass entries from August 1927 until February 1937. As Malone did not acquire the business in Bacchus Marsh until 1932 the collection includes records created by earlier proprietors of the business.Detailed customer records of prescriptions dispensed by Pharmacists are held by some libraries and museums in Victoria but they are a relatively rare type of material to be preserved. These records cover a period of severe economic depression and are particularly valuable as a record of how pharmaceutical practices were conducted during times of economic hardship. . Five bound volumes containing lists of customers and the prescriptions provided to them by Malones Pharmaceutic Chemist in Bacchus Marsh. Hand-written entries. Each volume is between 498 and 506 pages in size.
