Arundell's Shoe Shop and Dalgety's Agency , centre of High St Charlton, north side c. 1987. Corner of High St and Williams Ave (now John Curtin Drive). Right hand building built by William Williams as a saddlery c. 1910. Arundell's Shoe Shop formerly ANA Boot and Shoe Shop established by John Arundell in 1901. The shop was sold by Vic Arundell in 1980 and closed. Next door was John Watson's Stock & Station Agents which later became Dalgety's. The end shop was the saddlery and then Bullock's grocery 1930's to 1970's. In 1957 became Charlton's first self service store. Became Australian Estates late 1970s. The shops were later demolished to make way for the Traveller's Rest. Elaine Mann was married to David Mann, a successful Wodonga businessman and community leader who passed away in Wodonga in June 2012. David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. As of 30 June 1970, the business name Dalgety New Zealand Loan was delisted, with the company becoming Dalgety Limited. This information dates the photo as being taken between 1961 and June 1970. This site later became Wodonga Home Furnishers. This docket, from the firm of Dalgety and Company Limited of Terang, gives details of the sale of three rams on behalf of Joseph Tilley of ‘Aringa’. The total profit for Mr Tilley was £6-10-6. Joseph Tilley ran the property of ‘Aringa’ which was on the Portland Road, five miles from Port Fairy. He also owned the Penshurst Hotel at the same time. Dalgety and Company was established by Frederick Dalgety in Melbourne in 1846, primarily to support sheep farmers. In 1993 Dalgety Farmers became a subsidiary of the A.N.Z. Bank and the pastoral interests of the company were taken over by Wesfarmers.This docket is of some importance as it is an original one and gives details of a 1917 sale of a bull, with the names Wilson and Anderson and Tilley of some local interest. It gives us the prices for bulls at the time and the type of account form used.This is an original docket of 1917. The Melbourne General Cemetery opened in June 1853. The first male buried there was John Alexander Burnett, chief clerk to the mercantile firm of Dalgety, Borradale & Co. The headstone reads: In Memory of James Alexander Burnett, Merchant, Who Died 25 May 1853, Aged 36 Years. Burnett Street, St Kilda, is named after him. The street was created by F. G. This is the Dalgety bridge across the Snowy River. It is a steel construction.The first bridge over the river was constructed in 1888. There was a punt across the river before the bridge was built . Dalgety is a small service centre, located on the Snowy River approximately 235 km from Orbost. It was an early consideration for the site of Australia,s capital city. The Dalgety Bridge over the Snowy River has been an important item of infrastructure in the history of New South Wales for over 110 years. It was designed by noted bridge engineer J. A. McDonald,and was a technically sophisticated bridge structure for its time. Report - six sheets, were paper clipped together, three foolscap (marked 4370A) and two quarto sheets (marked 4370C) titled "Lives of North Melbourne City Section ropes during 1917-18", regarding a claim made through Dalgety and Company (3/1/19 and 6/1/1919) for damage on a section of rope that was on a ship that was sunk by enemy action. Has a three page report on the cable life and insurance claim made by the Tramway Board in 1918, looking at the life of the cable compared to previous ropes. Quite a detailed study made and costs incurred. Commercial realities and bushfires caused the Beech Forest community to re-establish itself around the railway station, away from Gardner Hill. This caused John W. Gardner to subdivide his land on the north side of the railway station. One subdivision was created near the Ditchley railway station on the old racecourse site, and another of 25 allotments forming what became Southorn Street.
