Open Monument is a contemporary artwork acknowledging the history of Chinese people in Ballarat. The Chinese diaspora was global and many Chinese people came to Ballarat and the Victorian Goldfields. The work details some of the personal Chinese family memories of Ballarat from the goldrush forward. The 33 marble laser-etched panels include found images and texts mounted on a modernist metal architectural feature holding back a grassed hill landscape. This edited collection of women's correspondence constitutes an important historical record of the experiences of Aboriginal women during a crucial period of social change. In particular the letters are valuable for the insight they offer into the impact on Aboriginal communities of government legislation and mission policies and the women's assertion of their entitlement to freedom and agency. A copy of "The Loddon Valley Courier and Farmers' Advocate" dated February 27, 1920. the paper has 4 pages and it was inside the book catalogue number 1572.127. on the back page there is an article that connect the paper to the book. The article is titled: Farewell to Mr. and Mrs. J. Waugh and family and it describe an evening at the Laanecoorie hall where the family was presented with gifts from the Laanercoorie for the standing in the community. Mr. John Waugh received a gold chain with an inscribed medal, Mrs. Waugh received a coffee service, miss Nora Waugh received a gold pendant and Tom Waugh a shaving outfit.newspaper

The Bendigo Easter Fair was established in 1871 to fundraise for the Bendigo Hospital and the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum. This brown wool felt hat with a broad brim was, by its style, used by a adolescent child for church services. This was worn in a period where church services on Sunday was an important weekly ritual by the whole family. Special (church only) dresses and hats were worn not only to show respect to the church but also part of expected community mores relating to religious beliefs. This behavioural pattern was more entrench in the rural communities than within larger cities. The closeness of smaller rural communities is the main factor regarding social norms. The visible standing within the community was uppermost. The period pre 2000 was a more coheasive family environment ( due to greater intra family activities) which provided better communication and family activities.This "church styled" hat is very significant to the rural lifestyle and its mores. It clearly demonstrates the coheasive force that religion has on the Valley population. The closeness that the semi isolation (at this time) brought about by the Valley's physical land formation and the poor roads within the valley brought families closer together. Not turning up for important social functionsw was duely noted by all (and frowned upon). Mrs E. Fisher lived at Mongan's Bridge in the Kiewa Valley.Brown child's all felt hat size 6 1/4. The Jubilee of this church was held in 1933. "Paton Memorial Presbyterian Church. BALLARAT, Sunday Jubilee celebrations of the Paton Memorial Presbyterian Church were well attended in the week end. A basket picnic on Saturday at Eureka Stockade reserve was followed at night by a social gathering, at which a birthday cake was cut by Mrs. Amor, a foundation member. On Sunday special services were led by Rev. J. A. Moscript, assisted by the young men of St. John's Church. The church was originally founded, by the late Mrs. J. P. Murray to mission to the needs of the busy mining community which existed in Canadian in early years." (The Age, 06 November 1933.) PATON MEMORIAL CHURCH - An interesting tree-planting ceremony was performed in the grounds of the Paton Memorial Church on Saturday lost. Trees were put in by the scholars of the Sunday school to commemorate the enlistment of all the boys who had in any way been connected with the church. Sunday school, and Young Men's Club. The Mayor (Cr Levy) spoke in terms of praise of the lads who had enlisted to fight for right against might and the tyranny of Prussian militarism. The Hon. R. McGregor MLA., and the Revs. A. H. Moore and W. Rowlands were among those present. on also Mesdames J. P. Murray and McGowan, two of the founders of the church. During the afternoon Cr Levy planted a tree in honor of Mrs Murray. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the congregation. (The Age, 06 November 1933.) This church was in the middle of a Chinese neighbourhood, and the 1800s the leprosarium was in the vicinity. The Wonga Park Community Cottage, 1984, originally built by Alan Bickford in 1950 for his family, owned by the Shire of Lillydale since 1978

This wooden proddey has a rounded handle and a cone shape with a point at the bottom. It is used for making rag rugs. The wood is discoloured at the pointed end, indicating that is has been used. The tool is part of the W.R. Angus Collection. Traditionally, in the 18th and 19th centuries, rag rug making was a domestic craft. Old or worn-out fabrics and clothing would be cut into strips then proddey would be used to poke the strips through a woven backing fabric. The fabrics were re-purposed and the rugs provided warmth or protected the floors from fluids or dirt.The proddey is an example of a tool used for rag rug making, in the 18th and 19th centuries. The handcraft returned to popularity in the early 20th century. W.R. Angus Collection is significant for still being located at the site it is connected with, Doctor Angus being the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool.Proddey; teardrop or conical shape, light-coloured wood, used for rag rug making. Tool has a rounded handle and is decorated with two scored lines around the top of the cone. Part of the W.R. Angus Collection. Dr Angus lived and worked in Warrnambool with his family from the 1930s to the 1960s. He was the last doctor to pe appointed as a Port Medical Officer. He and his wife were actively involved in the local community.
