Book, The Victorian Reading book - first edition, 1928 (first edition)
... This is a first edition copy of the Victorian School... This is a first edition copy of the Victorian School Readers (Eighth Book ...This is a first edition copy of the Victorian School Readers (Eighth Book) issued by the Education Department of Victoria. These readers were first published in 1928 and became standard texts for all school children up to Year Eight. They complemented the School Paper which had been published monthly for different year levels since the end of the 19th century. Both the Readers and the School Papers were in widespread use until the late 1940s and the early 1950s. William McCullagh and his wife Margaret had the property Oak Grove at Yangery at the end of the 19th century and in the early decades of the 20th century. Yangery is an agricultural area situated between Woodford and Koroit. There is a record of Silvie Jean McCullagh (parents – William and Margaret) born in 1914 and this is probably the person who owned and used this reader. This book is of interest not only because it is a first edition copy of one of the well-known Victorian School Readers but also because it was connected to the McCullagh family of Oak Grove, Yangery. This is a hard cover book of 260 pages. The cover was originally a burnished brown colour but the book has been covered with a mottled patterned cloth material (red, green and brown). The cover is partly torn off at the bottom of the spine. The book has poetry and prose extracts and includes many black and white sketches, maps, photographs and illustrations. The inscription and some other annotations throughout the book are handwritten in pencil. ‘Sylvia McCullagh, Oak Grove, Yangery, Dennington P. Financial record - Document, Swinton Employee Assurance, 1947
... pages of printed and typed material. It is a copy. The first... pages of printed and typed material. It is a copy. The first ...These documents come from the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd. They are 1947 life insurance documents related to the insuring of Swinton employees, payable following retirement or death. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street, Warrnambool, selling groceries, glassware, china and hardware. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Cudgee, Nullawarre, Wangoom, West Warrnambool and South Warrnambool. Following William Swinton’s death his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, produce and hardware. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. These documents are of interest as they contain information on the insurance policies taken out by Swintons Pty Ltd on behalf of their employees. The current Swinton business in Timor Street is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the name Swinton associated with businesses in Timor Street for 152 years, it is amongst the oldest family business in Australia. .1 This is a document in four parts concerning the insurance for employees of Swintons Pty Ltd. in 1947. The pages are copies and have both printed and typed material .2 This is a policy document, a sheet of paper folded in two to make four pages of printed and typed material. It is a copy. Book, Victoria & Its Metropolis Vol 1 & 2, 1888
... and New Zealand which sold 100,000 copies, the first best-selling... Zealand which sold 100,000 copies, the first best-selling ...These two volumes are seminal historical writings published in 1888. The author of Volume One is Alexander Sutherland (1852-1902), described as ‘a forgotten Australian intellectual’. Born in Scotland, Sutherland was a teacher, poet, biographer, novelist, scientist, philosopher and journalist. In 1902 he was the Registrar of Melbourne University and he was the Secretary of the Royal Society of Victoria. With his brother, George, he wrote a history of Australia and New Zealand which sold 100,000 copies, the first best-selling Australian history. His book, ‘The Origin and Growth of the Moral Instinct’ influenced Russian philosophical thought. This is a most significant book as it contains short biographical notes on a great number of early (19th century) residents of the Warrnambool district. As well as listing information on Warrnambool identities it includes information on residents of Purnim, Wangoom, Dennington, Panmure, Garvoc, Framlingham, Winslow, Yangery, Woodford, Mailors Flat, Grasmere, Bushfield and Allansford. It is a great resource for researchers today. The two volumes also contain illustrations pertaining to the areas around Warrnambool and are of great historical as well as artistic interest. These are two volumes of ‘Victoria and Its Metropolis’. They are leather bound with a black cover, heavily ornamented in gold around the edges of the cover and with the printed material also in gold lettering in an ornamental pattern. The spine of the covers are brown with gold ornamental patterns and printing. Volume One has 594 pages with 258 illustrations , all black and white and this volume contains writings on the early days of the colony up to 1888 and chapters on the arts, churches, education, industries, science etc. in Victoria. Volume Two has 822 pages with many black and white illustrations and chapters on the regions in Victoria and biographical notes on the pioneer settlers of these districts. Both volumes are in a very tattered condition with many loose pages and the leather binding much torn and with some parts missing. Volume One cover: ‘Victoria and its Metropolis, Past and Present’ Volume One spine: ‘Victoria and its Metropolis, Vol. 1’ Volume Two Cover: ‘Victoria and its Metropolis, Past and Present’’ Volume Two Spine: ‘Victoria and its Metropolis, Vol. 2’ 19th century victorian history, victorian pioneer settlers, alexander sutherland -

News Sheet, Newspaper Warrnambool Examiner, 1870
... of two pages per copy with printing on both sides. The first page.... The first page of the copy for 1st April is missing. The pages ...The Warrnambool Examiner was founded by John Wilkinson and Richard Osburne in 1851. After a gap of a couple of years Richard Osburne resumed publication in October 1853 and continued until 1867. William Fairfax and Henry Laurie then leased the paper (1867 to 1872) before Richard Osburne again became the proprietor from October 1872 to April 1878 and from December 1879 to December 1880 when publication ceased. Richard Osburne was a pioneer settler in Warrnambool, arriving in 1847. He was prominent in community activities in the town and was a most important early historian, publishing his seminal work, ‘The History of Warrnambool’ in 1887, using the Warrnambool Examiner newspapers to assist with this history. Fairfax and Laurie were the proprietors when the papers described herein were printed. William Fairfax was a member of the Fairfax family which was, and still is, associated with the publication of many Australian newspapers. Henry Laurie later became well-known as a Melbourne University Philosophy Professor. These original newspapers are most important because they contain much information on Warrnambool’s early history and are a primary source for historians. These papers are also of importance because some parts of these papers were not filmed and are not currently available on microfilm. These papers were in a Warrnambool City Council storage area and it is surmised that they have come from the old Warrnambool Museum which no longer exists. These are original copies of the Warrnambool Examiner newspapers from 1st April 1870 to 28th June 1870 and from 1st July 1870 to 30th September 1870.The two sets of papers are bound together with plain cardboard, grey binding and glue. The front cover of the first set is missing. The papers are broadsheets of two pages per copy with printing on both sides. The first page of the copy for 1st April is missing. The pages are tattered on the edges. The advertisements and public notices of both sets have been marked by an editor in red and blue pencil. warrnambool examiner, richard osburne, william fairfax, henry laurie -

... ). The ledger also has blank pink pages used for duplicate copies...). The ledger also has blank pink pages used for duplicate copies ...This ledger’s first owner was Rolf Crawley, an architect and the official engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. His grandfather, father and uncle also worked for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the family members recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. Stan Baulch later acquired the ledger, tore out the pages that had been used and recorded some aspects of his life from 1916 to 1923. Stanley Baulch (1897-1980) was the grandson of pioneer Kirkstall settlers, Francis and Ann Baulch and the son of Samuel and Eliza Baulch. In 1893 Samuel Baulch acquired the historic property of Dunmore, between Macarthur and Hawkesdale and in 1910 he purchased the property of Cowabee in the Riverina district in N.S.W. Stan Baulch managed Cowabee for some years before inheriting part of Dunmore which he named Rose Park. Cowabee was sold in 1922. Although only a few pages in length, this diary contains much interesting information on the early years of Stan Baulch at the homesteads of Cowabee and Dunmore. It will be useful for research purposes. This is a hard cover ledger with a dark grey cover and dark red binding. It contains pages printed with the name and address of the Shire of Warrnambool Engineer, Rolf Crawley. These pages contain two sections to a page ruled with blue lines to be used for short letters or invoices (originally 500 sections). The ledger also has blank pink pages used for duplicate copies. The first 42 sections have been torn out. Twenty of the pages have handwritten material in blue ink and these are biographical notes about the years 1916 to 1923 written in the ledger at a later date by Stan Baulch.Cowabee-Dunmore S.S.B. diaries 1916-23stanley baulch, cowabee & dunmore properties, rolf crawley, history of warrnambool -

... -6239/text10739, published first in hard copy 1981, accessed...-6239/text10739, published first in hard copy 1981, accessed ...William FRATER (1890-1974) Born 31 January 1890 at Ochiltree Castle, near Linlithgow, Scotland Arrived Melbourne, Australia in September 1910 In a lecture on modern art in 1925, Frater stated the basic position from which the rest of his oeuvre stems: 'Copying nature is not an art; … to copy effects of light tends to destroy form and colour'. Frater gave aggressive leadership to the small group of modernists in the 1920s. His example, teaching, lecturing and crusty style of polemic did much to disrupt the academic style as the arbiter of pictorial values and to pioneer a change of taste in the community. His approach in the 1930s was markedly indebted to Cézanne, especially in the portraits which predominated until his retirement from stained-glass designing in 1940. (L. J. Course, 'Frater, William (1890–1974)', Australian Dictionary of Biography, National Centre of Biography, Australian National University, http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/frater-william-6239/text10739, published first in hard copy 1981, accessed online 3 May 2016.) Jock Frater was on of the first modern painters who opposed the fashionable and academic schools of painting. During the 1930s he exhibited with the Contemporary Art Group along with Arnold Shore and George Bell. During a very conservative period in Australian Art John Frater advanced the cause of innovation and modernism. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection.
