Cottage of Edward Toohey (died 1898) a Shire contractor and road maker. Ned, his son worked with Frederick Myers building many of the bluestone roads in the Shire of Melton. In the background is the brick house built for Martha Myers in 1967. Martha and husband Frederick (born 1877 in Melton) resided in the Myers (Miers) house on Western Highway beside the gully near Reserve road. Frederick lived there for 86 years. The house was built in 1867 by Henri and Ann nee Dowling Myers. Demolished 1968. Martha Myers house was demolished in 2011 to become a car park. These four items came from the wedding cake made for the 1942 wedding of Ena Todd and Jack Heazlewood. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920 and was a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. When she married Jack Heazlewood he was a stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney. They later lived in Sydney. Wedding cakes today often continue to be decorated with items similar to these. These cake decorations are of interest as examples of wedding ornaments of the mid 20th century and as mementoes of the 1942 wedding of two Warrnambool residents, Ena Todd and Jack Heazlewood. Notice the bathroom behind the towel on the washing line. This was erected to give the tenant privacy. It cost over 100 pounds. The place was condemned a month or so later. You will notice there is nothing growing here. This part was always used for growing vegetables, there is not one there now. If I get him out the place will have to be demolished. There is also the remains of the old well. The old smoke house used to be down there also. All these things have disappeared a long time ago. The house is the only thing that remains of the Schwerkolt property. The wine cellars and other buildings fell down years ago after the bush fires burnt the wooden supports. You will notice the toilet has about 3 boards off the top. The floor is all eaten away with white ants and is all levels and the weatherboards have fallen at the ends. The roof is very bad also the gable of the stone looks not so good. The wooden kitchen is about 6 inches away from the stone house all the way around. You will notice the roof of the stone house is all colours with rust and paint. You will notice there are no spouts to take the water away. It is a collection of memories of 49 residents recorded in oral history interviews and then adapted into a written record. Most of the interviewees had lived in Bacchus Marsh for many decades and are from a variety of occupations and backgrounds. The oldest interviewee was born in 1890 and the youngest was born in 1938. Edith Sarah Pickford was born and raised in Clunes, Victoria. She is the only daughter of John Pickford and Betsey (Robbins) Pickford and sister of Henry Pickford, John Pickford, William Harold Pickford, Horace Pickford DCM, Arthur Pickford and Charles Alexander Pickford. Edith's maternal grandmother was a descendent of Donald Cameron, the first recorded European settler in the Clunes area.The Pickford family's pioneer settler legacy in the Clunes- Glendaruel district is commemorated with a Pickford Road and displays in the Clunes Museum. A collection of Edith's song music was donated to the Clunes Museum by her great grand-daughter in 2023. Edith married a local farmer, Henry Smerdon Holmes from "Sauchieburn" Ascot, Victoria. Henry was a descendant of the family who had inherited their maternal ancestor's, Catherine Coghill (nee Holmes), Ascot - Coghills Creek property. This branch of the Coghill Family descended from the district's pioneer settler, Captain Coghill. Edith and Henry spent all their married life, and raised 4 children Jack [John], Bill [William], [Mary] Elizabeth and David, at Ascot. She was buried in the Coghills Creek Cemetery with her husband, Henry Smerdon Holmes, and their son, David, in 1967. Mabel nee Abraham Rogers produced, wrote and acted for the “ Melton Amateurs” theatrical group established in 1950. The group performed Revues, Pantomimes, one and three act plays, Musical Comedy and Melodramas. In 1960 it lapsed for a time and from 1967 onwards more shows were successfully produced by Mabel. A creative producer and writer, audiences at the Melton Mechanics Institute enjoyed the performances of Gilbert and Sullivan and excerpts from the many Musicals of the era. She skillfully wrote scripts interweaving with songs and topical local dialogue successfully drawing out the talents of all the cast members. About “Melton Amateurs” and forerunners….. Melton people have always been Active in giving and enjoying Concerts and Amateur Theatricals presented by local talent. Wile is it not possible to mention everybody; names like George Gardiner, Stan Hardy, Jim Murchison, Rita Summers, Annie Riddell, Ethel MacPherson, Harold Bainbridge, Jack Mcguire, Greta Jongebloed, Mary Coburn, Elsie McCorkell, Linda Cameron, Marjorie Myers, Aggie Ross, Bob Butler, bring happy memories to older residents. Over the years, the names change, but the talent is always there, and freely used to give pleasure to others. the Caledonian Society was active about 1925. The Melton Competitions, 1937-37 were very successful and attracted much local and outside talent. The Melton Social and Dramatic Club was operative during the same years, and gave several shows. The first “Melton Amateurs” production was a Revue, in 1950. This was followed by other Reviews, Pantomimes, One-act and Three-act plays, and Musical Comedy. This photographic postcard of the SS Edina was taken after the 1890’s due to the style and configuration of the vessel. There is a black and white photograph of the same image also in our Collection (RN 3192). It is most likely that both of the photographs were donated by the same person because the people mentioned in the inscription on the black and white photograph’s reverse side connect with two of the people mentioned in the letter on the reverse of the coloured photograph. * RN 3192; Black & White photograph - inscription: "Donated by Mrs. Nancy Mason, Bay View. Owned by Mac Fordham, Chief Engineer, 'Edina', then given to Mrs. Mason's father-in-law Arnold Mason (both Engineers W.W. I)" The “Arnie” to whom the letter was addressed is likely to be Arnold Mason, Engineer. The author of the letter, “Mac”, is likely to be Mac Fordham, Chief Engineer of SS Edina. Cheerio Mac = = = = = = = = = = = = ABOUT THE S S EDINA The three masted iron screw steamer SS Edina was built in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1854 by Barclay and Curle. She was adorned with the figurehead of ‘fair maid of Judea’. The many years of service made SS Edina famous world-wide as the longest serving screw steamer. (The term screw steamer comes from being driven by a single propeller, sometimes called a screw, driven by a steam engine.) SS Edina’s interesting history includes English Chanel runs, serving in the Crimean Ware carrying ammunition, horses and stores to the Black Sea, and further service in the American Civil War and later, serving in the western district of Victoria as well as in Queensland and carried gold, currency and gold prospectors Australia to New Zealand. SS Edina had the privilege of being an escort vessel to H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh during his visit to Australia in 1867. In March 1863 SS Edina arrived in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne and was bought by Stephen Henty, of Portland fame, to work the cargo and passenger run from Melbourne – Warrnambool – Port Fairy - Portland. After a short time of working the run from Australia to New Zealand, with passengers and cargo that included gold and currency, she returned to her Melbourne - Warrnambool – Port Fairy run, with cargo including bales of wool produced in the western district of Victoria. The Warrnambool Steam Packet Company purchased SS Edina in 1867; she was now commanded by Captain John Thompson and Chief Engineer John Davies. She survived several mishaps at sea, had a complete service and overhaul and several changes of commanders. In 1870 SS Edina was in Lady Bay, Warrnambool, when a gale sprung up and caused a collision with the iron screw steamer SS Dandenong. SS Edina’s figurehead was broken into pieces and it was not ever replaced. SS Edina was re-fitted in 1870 then was used as a coastal trader in Queensland for a period. She was then brought to Melbourne to carry cargo and passengers between Melbourne and Geelong and performed this service 1880-1938. During this time (1917) she was again refitted with a new mast, funnel, bridge and promenade deck, altering her appearance. In 1938, after more collisions, SS Edina was taken out of service. However she was later renamed Dinah and used as a ‘lighter’ (a vessel without engine or superstructure) to be towed and carry wool and general cargo between Melbourne and Geelong. In 1957, after 104 years, the SS Edina was broken up at Footscray, Melbourne. Remains of SS Edina’s hull can be found in the Maribyrnong River, Port Phillip Bay. Frame 10. Photo 1. A group of Sergeants on the deck of the Karmala. Jack and Bert were the only Sergeants from the 45th quota from the original Battalion on the Karmala. There were two other Sergeants who had transferred to the 38th, one in Oct 1918, Sgt R. L. Glover from the 37th Batt and Sgt F. Perkins also from the 37th who transferred in April 1919. In the family collection there are two faded sepia photos showing the others not in this negative. The negatives to these are missing. From the War Diary of the Karmala there were ten nurses on the Karmala and there are ten nurses in the photos. There was also the ship's Medical Officer who is hidden in this negative. The ship's S.M.O. was Captain C. P. Rosenthal from the 33rd Batt HQ.
