On 23rd March 1936, the Australian Motorist Petrol Company, (Ampol) was incorporated in NSW. It was the first oil company that the Australian public could buy shares in. It was listed on the Stock Exchange in 1948 as Ampol Petroleum Ltd. These gloves belonged to Maria Frisch who had survived a number of concentration camps during the war and emigrated with her daughter Anne to Australia in 1948. Maria and her daughter Anne were Polish Jews. As a small child Anne had been smuggled out of the Krakow ghetto in 1942 and was taken in by a Polish woman. At the end of the war Anne was reunited with her mother in Krakow. In 1945 they travelled to Italy to be with Maria's sister Ida who had lived in Florence since the 1930s. When Maria and Anne emigrated to Melbourne, they lived in Martin Street, Brighton. Maria's husband, and Anne's father, perished in Mauthausen concentration camp. Maria Entenberg married Jack Frisch in Melbourne in 1952.Pair of black suede gloves with original paper bag from Florence. The gloves are embroidered with small pink rosebuds and green leaves. A special committee was convened to investigate matters raised by Legate A N Kemsley (Chairman of JLC) in a letter dated 22 January 1948. The committee comprised of Legatees Armstrong (Chairman), Blackall, Brain, Carleton, Kemsley, G Langley, Sheldon, and Vines. The matters were addressed in two groups, Loyalty and Training in Good Citizenship. Loyalty: recommendations included a framed photo of the King and Queen is displayed in all residences and rooms where classes were conducted; that a simple declaration of loyalty be recited as part of classes; that the Union Jack and Australian flag be displayed in all rooms where classes are held (flags would need to be procured as their present stock as 'small and in poor order'; that the offer to borrow items from the UK Information Office about the Royal family be accepted; that Anzac Day and the Shrine of Remembrance be discussed prior to Anzac Day at classes held in March and April; that Junior Legatees be encouraged to attend Legacy Ceremony at the Shrine on Anzac Day. Training in good citizenship: to use the Legacy camps to impress on the juniors aspects of appropriate behaviour and attitudes. The notation H29 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. By 2025, 100 new trams will be designed and built due to a $1.5 billion government injection to fund 100 ‘‘next-generation trams’’, replacing A and Z-Class trams. Two manufacturers have been shortlisted to design and build the trams: French rail manufacturer Alstom and a joint venture comprising Spanish rail maker CAF and UGL. At 25 metres long – about eight metres shorter than the newest E-Class trams – the trams will carry 150 passengers, fewer than the E-Class, which carry 210 people. Despite the smaller size, seating will remain proportionally comparable with the E-Class, with 48 people or a third of passengers getting a seat on the new fleet.
