This Bible was owned by John Glasgow, a Wangoom farmer. His father, Robert, settled in Blackwood Hill near Wangoom in the 1850s. John Glasgow was a celebrated cheesemaker who won many prizes locally and overseas and a Warrnambool Shire Councillor from 1880 to 1886 and from 1892 to 1906. He was a Sunday School teacher at the Wangoom Presbyterian Church for 50 years and an Elder for 42 years. The book contains the names and birth dates of the extended Glasgow family and the names include Linnett, Glasgow, Coulstock and Anderson.This Bible is of considerable interest because of its connection to the John Glasgow and other members of his family. This is a leather-covered book with gold lettering on the spine. The cover overlaps the pages for extra protection. The pages are gilt-edged. One page has come apart from the binding and several other pages are partly detached from the spine. All the inscriptions are hand-written in black ink. One is a religious verse which has been pasted on to the inside of the front cover and on another page are listed the names and birth dates of 18 members of the Glasgow extended family. This book is one volume of a series of six volumes of Bible commentaries. It was a 30 year project for the writer, Adam Clarke. He was the great uncle of Daniel Clarke, a 19th century resident of Warrnambool. Daniel Clarke, as a social worker for the Anglican Church, established the Framlingham Aboriginal Reserve in the 1860s. For thirty years he was a prominent businessman in Warrnambool as a photographer and artist. He is well-known today for his paintings of Tower Hill and the Hopkins River mouth. This book is retained not only because of its antiquarian value but also because of its link with Daniel Clarke, important in Warrnambool’s 19th century history. This is a hard cover book with a black leather spine and black leather trimming on the cover edges. The cover is green with gold lettering and ornamentation on the spine. This is a product that was sold in the general store of Cramond and Dickson in Warrnambool early in the 20th century and produced for this store at the time. It may also have been given to customers as an advertising feature. John Glass Cramond and James Dickson established a drapery store in Warrnambool in 1855, firstly in Timor Street and then in Liebig Street. It specialized in men’s and women’s clothing and drapery and had a tailoring and millinery business. The store opened branches in several towns in the vicinity of Warrnambool, including Port Fairy. It also opened a branch store in London, enabling it to import materials and other items direct from London. The Cramond and Dickson store in Warrnambool closed in 1973. This mitt is of considerable interest as it is a sample of the wares and advertising articles coming from the general store of Cramond and Dickson of Warrnambool. This store was of great importance in Warrnambool as a dominant business in the town/city for over 100 years. This is a rectangular-shaped oven mitt with light brown leather on one side and a green-coloured felt-like material with a fluted edge on the other side. The mitt has machine stitching diagonally across both sides and machine stitching around the edges. A leather looped tag is attached at one corner so that the mitt can be hung up. This book is a 19th Century treatise on aids to navigation. It belonged to John Cowtan who held land near the Cassady's Bridge area in Caramut Road today (he was related to the Cassady family) and who is mainly important in the history of Port Fairy. Captain John Cowtan was a ship's master for John Griffiths and a Launceston entrepreneur and ship owner between 1839 and 1844. In 1847 he went into partnership with John Bland, establishing a merchant's business with riverside buildings at the Port Fairy wharf. He left Port Fairy in the 1860s. The date of John Cowtan's signature in this book is 1849 (certainly a very early one in our history) and inside the front cover he has written notes about the local weather, mainly as it affected sailing conditions in late 1849 and early 1850. This book belonged to a Marian Adams from Limerick but, unfortunately no information has been found on this person or the connection to Warrnambool. There were several families in the Warrnambool area with the name ‘Adams’ in the 19th century. This book is kept as an interesting 19th century book but it will be of greater interest if information is found on Marian Adams. This is a hard cover book of 516 pages. The cover is brown leather with gold embossed ornamentation and gold lettering on the spine. The pages are gilt-edged and the cover has become partly detached from the binding. The pages are much stained and the cover is very rubbed. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. There are eight engravings on steel in black and white and all are protected with white tissue. This copy of Alexander Pope’s early 18th century translation of Homer’s Iliad dates from 1818. It has two signatures – Thomas Smith and Mary Riley. Nothing is known of the latter person. There were two people named Thomas Smith who were prominent in the Warrnambool district in the 19th century. One was Thomas Smith the printer and the other was Thomas Smith, a farmer from Wangoom who had a daughter named Mary. It is not clear which of these may have owned the book but the signature suggests an educated person and we know that the son of Thomas Smith the farmer was illiterate so it is unlikely that the father owned a copy of Homer’s Iliad. This book is of interest because of its age (1818) and because of the inscriptions. There may be no connection between Thomas Smith and Mary Riley – merely two owners of the book. The book will have greater interest when its exact provenance can be established. This is a brown leather-bound book of 536 pages. The front cover and spine have gold ornamentation with gold lettering. The spine covering is partly torn away and the binding is coming apart. The pages show some staining. This book belonged to Charity Lamerton Phillips and may have belonged to her parents before her. On the inside front cover are the names of George Phillips and Jessie Kerr, giving their marriage date and the birth dates of four of their children. Charity Lamerton Phillips (1872-1942) was the daughter of George and Jessie Phillips of Nirranda and she married Frederick Bonnett and farmed in the Mepunga district. This book is of interest because of its age and because it contains family information on the Phillips family of Nirranda. Many 19th century people recorded family information in a Bible or other old book kept in the home. This is a hard cover book of 325 pages. The cover is brown leather with some sections eroded away. The spine has gold lettering. The book contains several black and white illustrations. Some of the pages are stained and torn at the edges. According to the front page this autograph book belonged to Patricia Spencer of Spencer Street, Dartmoor. Dartmoor is a small settlement on the Princes Highway between Heywood and the South Australian border. It was first settled in the late 1850s and the main industry is the processing of timber from the surrounding pine plantations. Patricia Spencer attended Warrnambool High School in the late1930s and this album contains a number of entries from Warrnambool High School in 1938. It also has a page of eleven signatures of the Head Master, George Langley and other teachers from Warrnambool High School. There are also entries from people from Mortlake and Panmure and other entries with the person’s address not indicated. Autograph books such as this one were commonly owned by young people in the 19th and 20th centuries (up to about 1950) and were very popular with young girls.This album, although incomplete and tattered, is of interest because it is a good example of the social custom, more popular a couple of generations back than it is today, of young people owning and obtaining signatures and verses from their friends and acquaintances. It is also important because it contains signatures of Warrnambool High School teachers in 1938 and there are other entries of interest. This is a small autograph album that was originally bound with a cardboard cover with red leather backing but now has no front cover and only part of the back cover. The pages are all loose and the front section (buff-coloured) has a cardboard piece with felt padding. The pages are coloured in a variety of pastel tones and there are many handwritten entries of verses and signatures, with several from the ‘B’ Form, 1938, of ‘W.H.S. (Warrnambool High School). The album appears to have belonged to Patricia Spencer from Dartmoor. Some of the pages are torn and stained. This ledger comes from the Model Bakery business of G.W. Greaves, a baker and pastrycook In Allansford in the first half of the 20th century. Allansford is a township 10 kilometres east of Warrnambool, now incorporated into the City of Warrnambool. The ledger contains details of the Greaves business sales of goods, mostly bread, from 1946 to 1948 and includes the names of the customers, the orders and the moneys owing. The bakery served many nearby areas including Wangoom, Hopkins Point, Cudgee, Mepunga, Naringal and Lake Glllear. This ledger is of interest as it illustrates the size of the Allansford bakery and contains many names of people in the area in the 1940s, making it a valuable research object.This is a ledger with a black cover and leather coverings at the corners and a brown leather spine. The red label on the spine has gold lettering and ornamental edges. The inside of the cover has a red mottled pattern and has tape and string stitching. The woollen industry has always been of the utmost importance in Australia. Although exports have declined over the past decades the production of fine wool still remains important in our economy. The great increase in wool production in the mid to late 19th century in Australia led to the need to replace the hand shears with some mechanized form of shearing. The first sheep shearing machine in Australia was patented in 1867 and improvements to this early model were made over the ensuing years. The early 1890s saw the introduction of flexible drive shafts. The two items here described show this innovation. These two items are of interest as examples of handpieces used early in the 20th century in the mechanized shearing of sheep. They would be typical of the pieces used in the wool industry in the early 20th century in Western Victoria. There are today many local shearers living in Warrnambool and nearby towns and working in the district. .1 This is a metal handpiece for a sheep shearing mechanism. It has a toothed blade attached with metal screws at one end and a jointed metal pipe at the other end for attachment to the shearing machine. The middle section has been covered with black leather for easier gripping. .2 This is a metal handpiece for a sheep shearing mechanism. The people in these four photographs are unidentified. The quality of the articles suggests that the original owner of the frames was in affluent circumstances. Photographs dating back to the 1860s and the early 1870s are not common in our collection.These are two rectangular-shaped metal frames with brown leather coverings. The frames are hinged in the middle and the two sides are closed over with a metal clasp. (one of the metal clasps is missing). The frames have ornate gilt edges around the sides and an ornamental pattern on the leather fronts and backs. Inside the frames are four photographs (two in each folded frame) placed behind glass. The four photograph mounts have ornate gilt edges and three photographs are mounted in a round shape and one in an oval shape. Clothes brushes are still used today but they were of more importance in the days when white collar workers, both men and women, wore suits and hats and tailored clothing to work and these required frequent brushing to keep them looking good as they were not washable items. Formal work clothes were more likely to be worn, particularly by men, in the 20th century up to about 1970. This case with two brushes would have been used particularly in times of travel. This letter book contains handwritten letters, sketch maps and plans and dates from 1917 to 1920. It comes from the office of John William Crawley Junior, an engineer, architect and surveyor in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1895 to 1935. His father, brother and son were also engineers and worked in that capacity or as Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording 132 years of service with the Shire of Warrnambool. The Shire existed from 1863 to 1994. The letter book was passed on to John Crawley’s son, Rolf, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. The letter book then came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying business of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society then acquired this letter book, along with other Crawley ledgers, from the Michael Hand estate. This letter book is of considerable significance as it contains letters, plans and maps drawn up John William Crawley Junior, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool for 40 years. It will be very useful for research. This is a hard cover book of 745 pages. It has leather trim on the cover edges and the spine with gold lettering on the spine. The leather covering is scuffed and torn. The inside covers have a mottled blue lining. The book contains maps, plans and handwritten letters and has an alphabetical index at the beginning of the book. This is a field wallet that belonged to Rolf Crawley. He was an engineer, surveyor and architect in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. His grandfather, father and uncle were also engineers, working in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years service to the Shire. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. The wallet came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying business of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the wallet, along with several ledgers and other Crawley memorabilia from the estate of Michael Hand. This wallet is of interest as it was owned and used by Rolf Crawley when he was doing field work in connection with his surveying and engineering jobs either in private practice or as the Shire of Warrnambool engineer in the 20th century. This is a brown leather wallet in two sections that fold over and close with a flap or tongue that inserts into a strip of leather stitched into the cover. The two sections have extra pieces of leather that are stitched on to make compartments. These contain three pieces of thick card folded over. These gloves were donated by Miss E. Kerr of Warrnambool and were probably worn by her. The Ponting family has been prominent in the timber and building business in Warrnambool since the 1920s and still operate today. Miss Kerr was a member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in the 1970s and donated many items, especially household goods. Many women in the early to mid 20th century owned leather gloves which they wore mostly with suits and coats in the winter time. They can still be purchased today. These gloves are of interest as an example of the type of gloves worn by women in the 20th century. They will be useful for display.These gloves are made of a light brown leather. They have a leather string lace inserted as a decorative pattern on the wrist openings and the same lacing on the upper sides of the gloves but in this area the leather string is missing. Riding crops are used as a controlling mechanism by horse riders – to regulate the speed of the horse etc. This one was owned by J.C. Lumsden was a jockey in Warrnambool. JC Lumsden or John Calder Lumsden lived at 7 Nelson Street Warrnambool with his parents, father also JC Lumsden. John junior was an amateur jockey in 1950's and sixties and was also a distinguished show rider in "flag races"and the like, winning at local shows and the Melbourne Show. He was also a leading race horse trainer at Warrnambool. This item may well have been his fathers. Although we have no record of where this item came from the following information has recently been uncovered. JC Lumsden or John Calder Lumsden lived at 7 Nelson Street Warrnambool with his parents, father also JC Lumsden. It has a rounded wooden stick with interwoven material around one section and the remains of a string handle. The end of the stick has a leather tongue or keeper. There is a knob at the top end of the stick with a brass disc inserted with the name of the owner. This ledger is a Warrnambool Swintons Store stock book and contains the sales of stock from September 1869 to an unknown date (perhaps to the end of 1870) and entries for 1871, 1872 and 1873, 1889, the 1890s and some dates early in the 20th century. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street, Warrnambool selling groceries, glassware and china. In 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch shops were opened in Cudgee, Nullawarre, Wangoom, South Warrnambool and West Warrnambool. When William died his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split in two with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, hardware and produce. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This ledger is very important as an early memento of the Swinton Stores in Warrnambool. It gives details of sales in the 19th century and has material relating to the assets of the founder of the business, William Swinton at the time of his death. It is of great interest to researchers. The current family business in Timor Street Warrnambool is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the Swinton name associated with businesses in Timor Street for 152 years, is among the oldest family businesses in Australia. Rodd Pty Ltd was founded in Melbourne in 1919 and by the 1930s it was the leading manufacturing jewellery business in Australia. In 1948 the business was taken over by Max Rodd, the son of one of the founders and by that time it was known mostly for its household silverware. Rodd products were very popular wedding presents in the mid 20th century. This item has no known local significance but is retained as an excellent example of the Rodd Silverware that was found in so many households in Australia in the early to mid 20th century. It will be useful for display.This is a black leather-bound box with a gilt rim around the edge of the lid. The lid is attached to the box by two metal clips. One of these is broken. The box has a gilt metal clasp for closing the box. The box is lined inside with purple satin material and contains five electro plated nickel silver teaspoons. There should be six in the set but one spoon is missing. The spoons are held in grooves cut into a purple block across the middle of the inside of the box (perhaps made of wood). This man’s dress box contains accessories that a man would use, perhaps in a formal situation – bow ties,buttoning studs and detachable collars. The contents of the box may not be what was originally in the box. Bow ties and studs are still used on occasions but detachable collars are no longer in vogue because wash and wear shirts are freely available. Both of the companies which made the detachable collars, Pelaco and Cremorne, were based in Richmond in Melbourne. The Warrnambool jewellery business of M. Salamy and Son, has the known dates, 1912 to 1938. There were two Salamy shops, one in Timor Street, opposite the Post Office and one at 179 Liebig Street. This box and contents are retained because they are reminders of accessories men used in the past, especially for formal occasions. Also, one of the items came from the well-known Warrnmbool jewellery business of M. Salamy and Son..1 This is a circular-shaped leather box with a lid attached by stitching and a strap and a metal buckle for closing the box. Inside the box is a blue cardboard lining. The leather is scuffed. .2 & .3 These are two black cloth bow ties with metal clips at the back. The ties are housed in a blue wooden box. .4 These are seven elasticised bands for holding back shirt sleeves. Two of these are covered with red and blue cloth and five are made of silver-coloured metal .5 & .6 These are two white detachable collars. This is an army officer’s hat from the Australian Army. It dates back to the 1940s before the word ‘Commonwealth’ was deleted in 1949 from the name of the military forces. The Australian Army has used the rising sun emblem in its official insignia since the early 1900s. The owner of this hat is not known. This hat has no known local provenance but is retained for display purposes.This is a khaki hat with an oval padded crown and a rounded peak. The top has four metal eyeleted air holes. The badge on the hat has the Rising Sun emblem. There is a brown leather strap round the brim attached by metal buttons. The inside of the hat has a blue cloth lining with a square of cellophane. There is a grey leather internal band in the peak section overlaid with black material. There is some slight staining inside the hat. Australian Commonwealth Military Forces

This hat is one worn by members of the Boy Scouts. Warrnambool today has two Boy Scout groups and Allansford has one. The Warrnambool Tooram group has halls at the corner of Banyan and Timor Streets and in Otway Road and the Warrnambool Norfolk group has its headquarters at the corner of Kepler Street and Raglan Parade. This hat is of interest as an example of the hat worn by scouts in Warrnambool in the 20th century. The same type of hat is still worn by Boy Scouts today. This is a khaki felt hat with a wide brim The crown is folded in 4 sections with four eyelets. There is a brown leather band around the crown and a silver-coloured buckle and two silver studs. The band is adjustable and a piece of string with a knot is used for adjusting the chin strap and for hanging the hat on a peg. The chin strap is made of plaited leather and the inside is slightly stained. The hat is slotted into a wooden frame made of varnished plyboard. The frame is U shaped with two straight sides. A smaller added section of plyboard has been placed on top of the frame and this has an opening at the top to allow the hat brim to slot into the frame. This ledger contains a chemist's handwritten prescriptions from 1905 to 1910, giving the date, the name of the client and the prescription contents and measurements. The chemist is unnamed but the clients have Warrnambool names and a loose envelope in the ledger addressed to 'Mr H.F. Sambell' suggests that the chemist business may be that of Sambell and Son in Fairy Street Warrnambool. John Sambell established this business in Fairy Street about 1890. He died in 1906 but his son Herbert had joined the business and it was known as Sambell and Son for many years and later as Sambell, Son ad Granddaughter.This prescription book is of interest as a record of a chemist's prescriptions in the early 20th century and it has considerable research value.This is a ledger of 496 pages . It has a cream-coloured hard board cover with remnants of leather binding on the spine. It has ruled pages, an alphabetical index at the front and handwritten entries in ink. This ledger was used in the business of Twites Bakery which was in Timor Street Warrnambool and dates from the 1940s or 1950s. Max Cust, a breadcutter and relief driver at Twites, used this ledger to record the bread delivered in the South Warrnambool area. He lived in Banyan Street, Warrnambool and worked at Twites for a great number of years. This ledger is of interest as an example of the way bread deliveries were recorded in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century and tells us a little about many of the people living in South Warrnambool at that time.This is a ledger of 285 pages. It has a green thick card cover with tan leather spine and corners. The cover is scratched and stained and a couple of corners are a little tattered.
