Huddart Parker traded between 1876 and 1961. It was established in 1876 by James Huddart, T.J. Parker, John Traill and Captain T. Webb. The business rapidly expanded and was travelling between Melbourne and Sydney by 1882 and Melbourne to Adelaide from 1886. The Company was established in Geelong but moved its offices to Melbourne by 1890.It is likely this tea cup was used on the Huddart Parker shipping line some time from 1950 to the company's closure in 1961. Historically, the early establishment of the company in Geelong is significant for the region. The object is significant for its connection to Victorian transport from regional ports to larger cities. It is a good example of mid 20th Century hotelware and Duraline offerred 'unchippable crockery' for utilitarian purposes. Duraline was imported by Loftus Moran P/L who were based in South Melbourne and supplied the ware to hotels and institutions across Victoria. White glazed tea cup with blue transfer printed blue line around rim, blue geometric pattern around body and Huddart Parker line logo. Cup has a triangular shaped handle. Part of a 43-photo record of the MMBW�s engineering feat in drilling a 12 inch pipe line up to 40 feet deep through rock hardened by volcanic action associated with geological fault that occurs along the line. The work took place from October 1979 to May 1980 on the southern boundary of Hubbard Reserve, North Ringwood. On 17th December 1985 record torrential rain fell in Sunbury, which flooded the main Melbourne Bendigo rail line and disrupted traffic. The campaign to save the Yarra Valley from powerlines was a significant environmental campaign in multiple suburbs in the 1980s.White tee-shirt with an image of a man being electrocuted which was produced and sold to raise funds for the campaign to save the Yarra Valley from a proposal to build a massive power line between Richmond and Brunswick. These 2 photos are of Orbost men who were part of the 13th Light Horse volunteer regiment. This military training activity continued on after W W I. These photos were taken at the training camp at Seymour, Victoria. The Orbost troop would journey to other areas for training, sometimes to Bombala, and also practice on the Orbost Rifle Range. Although not identified in these photos, George William Wraight was a leader of the Light Horse Troop in Orbost and it is his daughter Dorothy Hepburn who has donated these photos. George W Wraight was the railway-station master at Orbost from 1935. The Troop often met at the Wraight house in Tarra Street, Orbost for training. George had been in W W I in the Middle East with the Light Horse. While at the railway station at Orbost, George had an accident and suffered 2 broken legs which meant that he could no longer work there. During W W II, he worked as a recruiting officer at Sale and Warrnambool. Cudgewa Line -The Cudgewa railway line opened in stages between 1889 and 1921. The first section from Wodonga to Huon opened on 10 September 1889. It was extended to Bolga on 18 July 1890, Tallangatta on 24 July 1891 and then to Shelley on 13 June 1916. Shelley was the highest station in Victoria. It extended further on to Beetomba on 10 April 1919 and finally reached Cudgewa on 5 May 1921. The line had 1 in 30 grades and trestle bridges that have been heritage listed. In 1919, the line was used to carry materials for the construction of Hume Weir, and three years later a spur line connecting Ebden to the weir was opened. In the 1960s, Cudgewa became the railhead of materials for the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The last passenger service from Wodonga to Tallangatta ran on 30 September 1961. The turntable and passenger platform at Cudgewa were abolished in 1976.6 Rubber and wood stamps used in the stations along the Cudgewa Line. A start on the construction of Bogong Creek race line was made at the commencement of winter in 1948. Work proceeded in the following years when work on the High Plains was not practicable. In January, 1951 the special trimming machine, the special slip form and concrete mixing and placing equipment was put into service. A shortage of cement caused some delays as well as a sudden financial recession. The race line was completed and put into service in 1952. An historical record showing the machinery used , the number of workers needed at any one time ( about 16 in this photo) and the mountainous terrain of the area. The Serviceton Railway Station was completed in 1889 , with the Colony of Victoria and the Colony of South Australia sharing the cost. Ut was at Serviceton the the Victorian rail line and the Adelaide-Wolseley railway line of South Australia joined. The Railway Station included customs offices which were no longer necessary after the Federation of Australian States in 1901. One of a series of photographs, taken by Edgar James Dower in the second decade of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Olinda, his family later moved to Surrey Hills. He worked as an adult as a clerk in the city office of the Metropolitan Gas Company, and in his role as a 'collector', he was able to photograph scenes including the construction of tramlines, railways and associated buildings in Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Surrey Hills. Later he established a real estate agency with his brother - the E.J. Dower Real Estate Agency, Dandenong Office.The image is an historically significant record of the development of transport infrastructure which was used to connect Victorians in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This development resulted from increases in population and the consequent extension of Melbourne's suburbs.
