Corporal Frederick Edward Woodley, No. VX24588 of 2nd/10th Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers, with his wife Ruby, eldest son Arthur and John, pictured beside the shed on Cowes Jetty prior to his departure for active service overseas. January 1941. Fred subsequently voyaged from Sydney to Singapore (via Western Australia) on the troop ship Queen Mary. He was taken prisoner-of-war by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore and imprisoned at the Changi P O W Camp. Later, after being on the missing list for some two years, it was learned that he was imprisoned at the most infamous Sandakan P O W camp in North Borneo from where he did not return. Fred was 37 years of age when this photo was taken. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-56: Alexander McLardy Sr. The descendants of Alex McLardy came to Phillip Island in the year 1886. A builder by trade, he built a great number of houses and buildings on the Island. He was also the founder of the Guesthouse "Glencoe". At 90 years of age he could still read well without the aid of glasses. He died in 1956 aged 95. Others buried in the double graves are: Robert Alexander died 1926 aged 10 months, Alexander Thomas died 1971 aged 76, Beatrice died 1966 aged 73, Donald Alexander died 1992 aged 64 and Claire Isobel died 1993 aged 61. 466-57: Walter Findlay. Walter's parents George and Mary, came to Australia in 1852. Walter was born in Sale circa 1883. He married Henrieta Kennon and they lived and farmed in Settlement Road, Cowes prior to their shop and residence being built in Warley Avenue, Cowes. The shop carried general merchandise and confectionery. The property was absorbed by Bass Coast Family Medicine on the west side of Warley Avenue. Henrieta died September 1965 aged 84. Railway Trestle Bridge over the Diamond Creek, Eltham, c.1910 - looking towards Main Road (left to right) and Henry Street (centre). Built in 1901, the railway line was electrified in 1923. Photo was taken prior to 1912 and the relocation of the new St Mary’s Catholic Church on Henry Street near Main Road (or Maria Street). The church site was relocated c.1912 from further south along Main Road (near Wingrove Cottage) to be more central to the congregation following the shifting of the township away from Little Eltham and closer to the railway station. It was subsequently destroyed by fire in 1961.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years. The Reynolds family were early settlers in Research. The Reynolds/ Prior collection of photographs were taken by Tom Prior, the maternal uncle of Ivy Reynolds, around 1900 and the 60 photos in the album give a fine overview of many of the landmarks of Research and Eltham over 100 years ago. lvy lived in the family home for many years at 106 Thompson Cres Research. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. The original St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church (1865-1912) was built of clay brick with buttress walls and a slate roof on the corner of Fordhams Road and Maria Street (Main Road), Eltham South, opposite the present-day Wingrove Park. It was blessed on September 3, 1865. With the arrival of the railway in 1901 and the town centre moving closer to the station, the decision was made to relocate the site of the church to its present-day location on Henry Street at the corner of Main Road. A new timber weatherboard church, also called St Mary's was erected and blessed on October 13, 1912. The church and land cost £1,400 (Evelyn Observer). The original brick church It was demolished in the 1920s and the bricks and windows were recycled to build a dairy on the Brinkkotter farm at Research. At the time of publication and reprints this book was envisaged to empower women. Whether' a teenager, career woman,a young married or mother' as a 'guide, philosopher, and friend' The editor Alleyne Jukes was born in Warrnambool to Charles and Mary Jukes of the Floral Farm Warrnambool. She attended Braemar Grammar School and Warrnambool High School. She lived and worked in Melbourne as a journalist and secretary living in St Kilda and Elsternwick 1949, Bentleigh 1954, Oakleigh 1963. In 1961 she gathered together a number of writers and consultants to produce Woman's World, a book designed as the woman's Bible to enable her to have access to expert advice and information about home and outside work fields.The book was hailed at the time at the time as the only work of its type produced entirely for Australian conditions and was an immediate success appealing to a wide range of readers. A similar subject book of smaller size and format has been sighted 'The People's Home Library', 1910 reprinted in 1923 by RC Barnum published by The Oceanic Publishing Company. Davey's Hotel at Miners Rest was built sometime around 1850, and Mary Tait was the original Licensee.The gentleman on the white horse is Harry Telford, who was with Phar Lap in America when the horse died.Names of the other men are not known. The photo is dated "circa 1916 -17" and originally came from a lady in New Zealand.The Hotel was de-licensed in 1940. The Giles family collection is of social significance at a local level, because it not only illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill during it’s establishment. But the Giles collection also gives us today a snapshot into what domestic life was like in early colonial times prior to Federation. This chest came from County Cavan, North Ireland, with Jane Fleming, when she migrated to Australia arriving at Port Fairy in approximately 1863. Jane Flemming was about 6 or 7 years old at the time and later was to become the mother of Mary Jane Giles (nee Flemming). Pioneers migrating to Moorabbin Shire brought items they thought would assist them in the new Country. They had to be self reliant and made their own clothing and utensils while establishing their market gardens and farms. A wooden wool winder, with extending arms for winding hanks of wool into balls prior to knitting. For ease of use the winder also rotates. Major Joseph Albert Wright a WW1 Light Horse veteran was in charge of this platoon the only Aboriginal squad in the Australian Military Forces at that time. St. Mary's Anglican Church at Bulla was originally built on the outskirts of Bulla township in 1858. In the early 1970s it was moved to its present site to make way for the flight path at the newly constructed Tullamarine Airport. The former site was on the corner of Oaklands and Sunbury Roads and is covered with vegetation. Photograph shows Llanberris House, built by Joseph and Mary Gundry on Iron Bark Station, west of the Anglesea Geelong Road, off Menzels Road above Spring Creek. The Gundrys took up Iron Bark station in 1844 and subsequently bought up more surrounding land. Just prior to Joseph's death in 1878, the property comprising 7721 acres was offered for sale as well as conditional rights to adjoining land. Ballarat Old Cemetery was officially established in 1856, with a board of trustees. It had been opened by Ethersay and has burials relating back to 1848. The Rules and Regulations of this historic cemetery are dated 1854, two years prior to its official establishment.
