Letter - St Aloysius Church, Caulfield
A series of correspondence dated between 21/08/1985 to 10/11/1988 regarding the Historic Buildings Council adding St Aloysius Church on Balaclava Road, Caulfield to the Historic Buildings Register. Four of the letters are between the Historic Buildings Council, the Caulfield Historical Society and the City of Caulfield. Copies of the replies by the Historical society (as indicated by handwritten notes in the letters) are not included in the file. A fifth letter dated 14/09/1989, addressed to Reverend Father John Fraser, Parish Priest at St Aloysius, advises him of the inclusion of St Aloysius on the National Trust Register due to its historic significance. Also included is a photocopy of the Caulfield Conservation study of St Aloysius, dated February 1994, by Andrew Ward. This study details the architectural features and historic significance of the church, recommending planning scheme control. The illustration published in the Illustrated Australian News (Melbourne, Vic. : 1876 - 1889), p. 144, on 2 September 1885, depicts Sandridge now Port Melbourne in 1885 from a seamen's point of view on board a ship.This engraving is a rare depiction fo the Bethel church as there is no early photograph. The Sailors' Rest is located at the back. The Tally Ho Business Park was built on vacant land previously owned by the Methodist Church. The land was sold cheaply to the Church by Abel Hoadley, and the Tally Ho Boys Home was erected there. A change in the care of the boys meant that the land became vacant for a considerable time before buildings appeared. The file contains numerous original and copied primary sources as well as short histories and correspondence between the Kew Historical Society and the Historic Buildings Preservation Council when it was proposed to demolish the church. Following the demolition of the Church, an aged care facility - Bodalla - was erected (since demolished). The file contains some information on Bodalla and a foundation stone relating to the former Church which was placed on the site. In the file, there is a photocopy of a brass plaque from 1860 that refers to the architect being George Wharton and the builders Messrs. The site of the former Kew Congregational Church was the earliest 'built' place of religion in Kew. An earlier building by Charles Vickers was replaced by a new brick church designed by Albert Purchas. Following the creation of the Uniting Church, the church at 30 Walpole Street was declared redundant and demolished to make way for the Bodalla Nursing Home (itself later demolished).Posed photograph, mounted on card, of the congregation of the Congregational Church in Walpole Street, Kew (demolished). Holy Trinity Anglican Church is one of the parishes of the Diocese of Melbourne in the Anglican Church of Australia. Services of worship began in this building in March, 1863. The Vicarage was built in 1873, and both carry National Heritage classifications. The first St. Hilary’s Church of England (Kew) was a timber building on the corner of John and Rowland Streets, designed in 1888 by Albert Purchas. This timber building was demolished in the 1940s to make way for a new church and tennis courts.
