The Australian Health Society was formed in Melbourne in 1875 at the instigation of Unitarian Minister MarthaTurner. It promoted hygiene and comprised of doctors, prominent citizens and politicians. It targeted poorer districts and women. Schools were pressured to place health education on the curriculum. Society stalwarts made an annual examination in state schools. Mongan's Bridge No. 3403 opened in 1902. It was located beside the Kiewa river and operated part-time with nearby schools on occasions as well as full time. Mt Beauty HES school was created for the children of the employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria who were constructing the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme at the head of the Kiewa Valley at the new town of Mount Beauty. Mt Beauty School consisted of Mt Beauty Higher Elementary School 1948-1964 before it was split into the current (2023) Mt Beauty Primary School and Mt Beauty High School. See. The Story of S.S. "Santhia" sank while in service as a troopship, of her subsequent salvage, and of how her bell came to Bogong School. Bogong State School was built and used from the 1940s when the SECV was constructing the KHES. The school bell was unique having originated from the ship "Santhia'. Teal colored background with the title printed in white at the top and the 'Bogong State School' printed in black at the bottom. 9 pages back to back with information about the School Bell. Catholics from Tawonga attended Mass at Dederang the area being part of the Myrtleford parish. With the coming of the State Electricity Commission and the increase in population Masses were said in various schools, homes and halls between Tawonga and Mt Beauty until the completion of St Joseph's ChurchSt Joseph's Catholic Church, Mt Beauty was consecrated on November 7th 1954. The SEC allocated land to each of the churches for them to provide their own places of worship. It was built by volunteers who donated money and their time to raise funds and build the church.1. The construction and development of the Kiewa Hydro scheme showing its construction and the people in work and play during its duration. It also shows the development of Mt Beauty and Bogong townships. The films were used as News Reels, Tourist Information and Entertainment.This item provids a snap shot in time (1990) when the Kiewa Valley was still relatively under populated and holiday houses owned by city bound workers was still relatively insignificant. As more and more holiday makers retire to a small but friendly region(Kiewa Valley and Mount Beauty) the increase in visitor numbers will affect the local rural bush scene more and more. The changes that will occur (in time) can be measured against the scenes presented in this video. The additional resources provided by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria of "alpine bush" fire control and management, together with an ongoing educational scheme for school children in learning about what constitutes the Alpine country's unique environment, are a very important offshoot, benefitting to both the communities within the Kiewa Valley and regional Victoria.This VHS tape is stored within its own plastic cover which has a front side Titled "KIEWA in the MAKING". This book was used in the first school in Mt Beauty only started in 1948/1949 this would have been one of the first books used in the school. Also as a state school book it is also significant to the Victorian State school system. There could be a lot of these books in other towns in the state, therefore it may not be just found in Mt Beauty. This item is historically significance as it shows what sort of books were used for that period. It is socially significant as the Mt Beauty school was new in this period therefore shows what the students were using. This item was used in Mount Beauty Primary School as part of a teacher's curriculum. The fact that it was in a rural area, Kiewa Valley did present a slightly different learning atmosphere than in the larger towns and cities. The majority of parents within the Kiewa Valley, had slight reservations of the "high and mighty" attitude of some city dwellers and the effectiveness of city bred teachers was how to overcome these ingrained mores. The mentioning of European nations and lifestyles was to the pupils in the infant schools far more like "fairyland" than the realism that they experienced on the "land". However at this age level fantasy was more important than reality. Australian fantasy tales e.g. Blinky Bill (circa 1930s) introduced main characters that infants could identify, especially in rural schools.This item is a green coloured hard backed book containing 384 double sided pages. This book was written to cover the whole of the sub intermediate syllabus for Victoria. Form 3 or Year 9 in todays levels This was an introduction to the higher levels of maths, e.g. Leaving certificate. This book is a very good indicator of what was taught in Victorian SchoolsThis has social significance because it shows what students of the Mt Beauty secondary schools would have been learning during the 1950's. This book has been donated by Wilma Davies, a local idenity, and has her usuage in the book. Therfore this makes this item very good interpretive capacity. This book would have been used for physical education for schools all over Victoria from 1946 onwards. It has a very good foward by HP Kelly MB BS Medical Inspector of Schools stating the importance of pyshical movement and sport which is still trying to be installed into children today! This book cover all ages of children from infants to sixteen year olds. This book has social and historical significance because it shows the games, sorts, exercises, and gymnastics, swimming, dancing and rhymes that were done in the mid 20th century. This shows that teachers were aware of the importance of PE during this time. Many of these principles are still being taught today and with so many children in Victoria being obese through lack of exercise, this is very topical book!
