A four motor bogie drop centre combination tram of the Melbourne W7 class No. 1029, built at Preston Workshops during 1956, entered service on 1/2/1956. Amalgamation was a major push of the Hawke - Keating Government. .14 - March 1992 - supportive of Jim Harper, dismissive of Lou DiGregorio, Union executive, union amalgamation, cross linking of tram routes, racial discrimination within the PTC, Kew Depot, ACTU. Lists the rank and file committee - see key associations. Latham’s frustrations were shared by several would-be heroes in Victoria. In 1977 Paul Krutulis gained an exemption from union membership from the Arbitration Commission as a conscientious objector, only to find that tramway workers at Kew planned to stop work as soon as he appeared. Commissioner Cohen then recommended his dismissal, saying she “had to deal with the reality of the situation.” Krutulis later became president of a group called People Against Communism, before being murdered in September. Thus Krutulis departed the scene to be followed in early 1978 by motor mechanic Jack Kane, who had crossed a picket line at a Melbourne City Council depot. The AMWU forced the Council to sack him before it would end the strike. In September of the same year, Barbara Biggs succeeded in provoking a confrontation in the tramways where Krutulis had failed, by refusing to join the union and prompting 100 unionists at Brunswick depot to go on strike. The union executive had arranged token action confined to this depot, but the members wanted more. The strike spread to Preston, then 2,000 trammies at a mass meeting voted for an indefinite strike amidst “rowdy outbursts”. When Biggs complained at being excluded from the meeting a conductress told her, “We should have let you in, love. Notes that Preston and North Fitzroy Trams have had them fitted since 4/1967. Provides information about their characteristics and changeover as cast iron shoes wear out. Set of 4 run number plates used at North Fitzroy Tram/bus and Footscray depot - plastic sheets off white or cream painted with the letter N of F (to indicate the depot) and a number to indicate the run number. Would have been used on buses as well. Letters in either red or black, some plates have a single hole in the top. Used to identify the depot and "run number" or timetable that the tram was running on, two in each tram, to enable monitoring by inspectors and crews. Question - were these used on Z class trams prior to the introduction the AVM system rather than metal run numbers. Black and white negative, by Wal Jack, of S 160 (St Georges Road) and W2 455 (West Preston 10) at the intersection of Barkly St and St Georges Road, North Fitzroy. The Trolley Pole is turned on S 160 for the car to return to Lygon St along Holden St. On a wall above the W2 is written "Gone to Berlin" On the corner is a Cash Grocer, advertising McAlpin's Flour, Velvet Soap. In the background is a bus stop sign and housing that has been built since the demolition and sale of the former Cable Tram depot. See March 1961 Electric Traction - "W7 1024 was decorated and illuminated for the centenary of the City of Kew, and was scheduled to run between December 4 and December 16, 1960, from Kew Depot on the Mont Albert and North Balwyn lines. Its term was extended to mid-January and it was still running in early February. It was similarly decorated for the centenary of the City of Fitzroy in 1958 (see illustration E.T. 10/60).
