There are 49p. with black and white photographs and diagrams throughout with blank pages for the student or teacher to write notes. It is intended as a general guide and ready reminder for those taking a course in laundry work. Some pencil notes are written on p 50 and on the last inside endpaper is a small pencil drawing. Included in the book is a beige paper sheet decorated with coloured leaves around the edges with the inscription as to it's history as written below. The Christy Minstrels were originally formed in New York by Edwin Pearce Christy in 1843. Special sheet music was published for Minstrel Groups to perform and Australian versions of the troupe were very popular. Archibald Munro was an early Orbost bootmaker, became a post master until the telegraph line came and was an original member of the Orbost Brass Band.In the United States these early minstrel groups were successors to individual minstrel performers who imitated Negro singing and dancing. Minstrel shows developed in the 1840’s, peaked after the Civil War and remained popular into the early 1900s. Minstrel groups in Australia followed the custom of blackening their faces. This notebook contains cuttings from the Warrnambool Standard pasted over handwriting which appears to be orders for a business. The cuttings concern the activities of the Warrnambool Rifle Club from 1924 to 1926. Rifle shooting in Warrnambool dates from 1860 when it was part of the activities of the Volunteer Rifle Corps and other later local militia groups. As a separate organization the Warrnambool Rifle Club, still operating today, dates from 1886 with the North Warrnambool Rifle Club founded in 1928. This exercise book contains notes written in 1939 by the Warrnambool doctor, William Roy Angus. The notes detail the visits made to the patients of Dr John Hunter Henderson by the two doctors on the occasion of Dr Angus taking over the practice of Dr Henderson. The exercise book lists the familiarization visits made and include the names of the patients visited, the location of their homes, their medical condition and other allied material. Dr Henderson came to Warrnambool in 1904, succeeding to the practice of Dr J.W. O’Brien. He was a member of the Warrnambool Hospital Board of Management and on his retirement he sold the Koroit Street, Warrnambool practice to Dr William Roy Angus. Known by the name, Roy, Dr Angus came to Warrnambool in 1939 after medical work in South Australia and Nhill, Victoria. During World War Two Dr Angus served as a medical officer at Ballarat and Bonegilla. After the war he specialized as an ophthalmologist in the Warrnambool area and had a long and distinguished career. He was also very active in community affairs in Warrnambool.This exercise book is a significant item as it has the original material written by Dr Angus on the occasion of his taking over the medical practice in Koroit Street Warrnambool of Dr John Henderson. This little slate notebook was given by Webb Brothers to their customers as an advertising tool. The Webb Brothers Company a large manufacturing firm in Lava Street, Warrnambool, making windmills, dairying utensils, steam boilers, and oil engines. They were also engineers, brassfounders and wholesale tinsmiths and plumbers. Motor car work became a speciality in the 1920s. In 1921 they opened a branch of their business in Melbourne (Bayswater) and the name of the firm became Presha Engineering Company. This notebook is of some interest as it was provided by Webb Brothers, an important company in Warrnambool in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is also an example of the advertising techniques used by business houses at that time and an interesting example of the use of a slate pencil and slate pages as a recording mechanism.This is a brown leather notebook with three pages of slate material making eight spaces for recording notes. Notes recorded in slate can be rubbed out and the space used again. The slate pencil container is on the side of the notebook but the pencil is missing. The cover is mottled with creamy-yellow lines. The pages are edged in red and there is scribble on some pages. The book was used by Peter Evans (born 1927) to record notes during classes in the Wool Classing course at Gordon Institute, 1939-1944. Mr Evans was from Hamilton, Victoria, where he continued the family business of wool and sheepskin trading. The book was a gift to Dr Grahame Abbott from the inherited estate of Peter Evans in consideration of his experience in the wool industry over 35 years at the CSIRO Wool Laboratories at Belmont.A bound cash book with a cardboard cover and maroon cotton binding.
