In the mid to late 1930’s survey outposts were established to plot the early stages of the Kiewa Hydro Electric System for the SECV in the Bogong High Plains. Before any roads were built, the old cattleman’s tracks were used with packhorses to deliver supplies, wages and mail and collect timesheets and correspondence from the workmen and dam builders living in canvas tents and at the outlying survey posts. The trip up the mountain was long and hard and dangerous for both horse and man Most of the men of the survey teams were not bush-men and were often ill equipped for the harsh weather and living conditions of bush camping, often arriving in their city clothes ready for work. The tent city at Bogong was destroyed by bush fires in 1939 after which an access road was built from Mt Beauty to transport building materials for more permanent dwellings for workmen. Pack horses continued to be used for transporting goods etc. to workers further up the mountain.Without the work of horsemen and their pack horses providing supplies and communications for outlying outposts, surveying and early planning for the Kiewa Valley Hydro Electric scheme could not have gone ahead and the dams and power stations which support the system could not have been constructed. The Hydro-electric scheme, and the workers who planned and built it play a major part in the early history of the Kiewa Valley and many original families still remain living, or have ties with the local area.: Set of 21 black and white photographs and copies of photographs depicting the pack horses and the men who handled them, transporting supplies and correspondence to the outlying camps and survey posts in the Bogong High Plains, via the rough cattlemen’s tracks. Herbert Allan Leighton was an actor and elocution teacher known widely in the eastern states of Australia where he performed with his wife Tracy Hamilton. But all was not as it seemed. In 1903 he was arrested in Perth after suspicions were raised when he bought expensive clothing and jewellery for his wife. Subsequently six thousand pounds in banknotes was found under his bed. Another fellow from his theatre group was also arrested and charged with Bank robbery. Leighton was charged with receiving money that he knew to be stolen. Investigations by Perth police showed that Leighton was really, Victorian born, Norman Campbell. He had worked as a clerk for Victorian Savings Bank in Melbourne and then in the same role at Sydney Savings Bank in NSW. During this time he had amassed large sums of money by forgery and embezzlement, a crime that he spent 7 years in prison for. He then emerged as the newly minted H. A. This is a 1906 advertising poster for the photographic business, Jordan Studios, Liebig Street, Warrnambool. This business was established in 1890 by Joseph Jordan, an Englishman who had been in the British Army in India. He erected the Jordan Studios building (94 Liebig Street) in 1901. Joseph’s son, Arthur, was also a photographer and artist. He photographed and sketched Wilmot (Abraham) several times and used one of these sketches as a basis for this advertising poster. It was well-known at the time that Wilmot was always willing to pose for photographs or drawings. Wilmot (Corwhorong), called ‘the last of his tribe’, was a member of the Tooram group associated with the Kirrae tribe. He spent the early part of his life at the Allan ‘Tooram’ property and was later at the Murray Warrnambool home, ‘Waikato’. He died in 1916 and is buried in the Warrnambool CemeteryThis advertising poster is of considerable importance as it is an interesting example of advertising by a photographer at the beginning of the 20th century. It is also important because it advertises Jordan Studios, one of the most significant photographic businesses in Warrnambool’s history. After World War II, the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme was started in the Kiewa River Valley by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. On land previously used only for summer cattle grazing in the natural alpine grasslands, the first ski lodge was built in 1948 by workers from the hydro scheme as skiing was a popular recreation. Many of the hydro employees were of European background and had grown up enjoying skiing and snow sports in their homelands and were keen to continue to pursue their winter sports interests. The first lift, a rope tow, was built in 1951 at Falls Creek and the first chairlift in Australia was constructed there in 1957. Two T-Bars were opened in 1961. In 1964, the Victorian Municipal Directory recorded that Falls Creek had 29 ski club lodges and 16 commercial lodges. The area became a popular tourist destination for both winter and summer sports.: Employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in the Kiewa River Valley were the earliest skiers on the Bogong High Plains and built one of the first ski lodges at Falls Creek. They were amongst those pivotal in the development of the skiing and tourist industry at Falls Creek and on the Bogong High Plains. The town of Tawonga is in the Kiewa Valley surrounded by farmland. It is adjacent to Mt Beauty (built from 1946), an SECV town built for workers on the SECV's Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme, which was being constructed from 1911-1961. Tawonga consists of essential amenities including a store, school, post office, butter factory, sporting facilities, hall and hotel. Activities involved sport, social get togethers eg. dances, fund raising, CWA etc.The posters are a collection of historical photos, documentation and information re the history of the town of Tawonga, which is the centre of a farming community in the Kiewa Valley.Posters framed with thin black plastic strip, covered by glass. in 1922 Kergunyah Park homestead was built by David Wallace in the late 1800's and remained in the family until the sale in 1922 when it was bought by John Woodside (grandfather of Ewen Wallace) whose family retained it until 1938. Another family named Wallace bought the property in 1938 and this family's descendants are still running it in 2005.David and Henrietta Wallace purchased the original holding and built Kergunyah Park homestead in the late 1800's running cattle on the property. They arrived in Australia in 1867 with their 3 children and were early settlers in the district. Their descendants still live in the district. Their family demonstrates how properties were passed on to the next generation.
