The Warrnambool Regatta was held on the Hopkins River on Sunday 27 December 1891. B. Laing rowed for the Warrnambool Rowing Club. A trophy was given to each member of the Maiden Four crew- A. Lumsden (bow), B. Laing (2), D. Rowan (3), J. Rowan (stroke), A. Geilhofer (cox). B. The photograph is of the 1925 Warrnambool Rowing Club Lightweight four- they raced at the clubs annual Boxing Day Regatta. H Sherriff was stroke J MacNamara (3 seat) C Earls (2 seat) L Halliwell (bow), T Fary was cox. The Regatta that year had three events and the other usual aquatic events were cancelled due to poor weather. Mr W. A. Hope was regatta secretary. It is recorded on page 109 of the 1914-35 minute book that 'Mr. Meckin, the president, said he had much pleasure in moving a motion of long salutation to the light weight four in recognition of the fine performance they put in at the Yarra Yarra and Albert Park Regattas...Mr. Hope seconded and added...credit to the crew..a fine lesson to some of the older members in perseverance..'Black and white photograph of a Warrnambool Rowing Club crew of 5 in a rowing boat on the Hopkins River, Warrnambool. CHALLENGE CUP The grand challenge cup (senior eights) brought together what is considered to be the best two club crew in Australia today - New South Wales Police and Albert Park, winners of the Gilbey Cup at the V.R.A. regatta last Saturday.

The Warrnambool Rowing Club was formed in the 1880s when there was a renewed interest in rowing and many young men were taking up competitive rowing. The Warrnambool Rowing Club used the new boatsheds erected in 1885 by Fanny Nelson near the mouth of the Hopkins River where the Hopkins Hotel was operating (Simpson Street). This badge belonged to a member (number 333) in the 20th century but the name of the owner is unknown.This badge is of interest but has no provenance so is useful for display purposes onlyThis is a small metal badge enamelled in blue and silver. It has a loop at the top for attachment to a chain or pin and a hole at the bottom – another attachment device. The back is gold-sprayed.
