Photograph (Digital) Harnessing Horses, Harnessing Working Horses early 1900, early 1900s
This copy of an original photograph created in the early 1900s details the "horse and cart" era when the normal transportation of the day was, in this rural setting, exclusively by horse and cart. The importance of this particular photograph to the subjects can be seen by the formal suits worn by both subjects. The natural bush and grassed backdrop have not been "touched up". The dray behind the horses is barely visible (fog like aperture). The lad , John Cooper was 14 years old when this photograph was taken. Both were in the process of harnessing four horses to "hook up" on the dray behind them. From their attire it looks like a trip to town or "the church".This photograph of life on a rural property in the early 1900 shows the rough and hard (physically) life in rural areas before great mechanical revolution/evolution post World War II. This was a time in the Kiewa Valley when most transportation was by horse drawn carriages and transportation routes where dirt roads with potholes. The significance of a local pioneer "family" encapsulated by this photograph cannot be reproduced as effectively in any other form. This digitised scanned copy of an original photograph of four work horses is on 200gms Fujicolor (Fujifilm) Crystal Archive paper has a silver side on which the image has been printed and a matt reverse side. The darker slightly "blurred" image has had a white frame placed over it at the time of encapsulation to provide the finished photo with a frame. This method highlights and focuses the view into the photograph. It is a clever way to permit the eyes to focus into the image to give it a greater third dimensional aspect. on the reverse side hand written(in pencil) "John Cooper & Paddy Cullen (itinerant worker) on grandfathers place (opposite Nesta Drews place) (orange Grove). "Grandfather emigrated from England with Ryders""orange grove " property, early tawonga life style, john cooper, paddy cullen, harnessing working horses -

Trophy CWA, Circa 1950
This trophy was presented by the Country Women's Association (C.W.A) Kiewa Valley Branch circa 1950's. This was in a period when the C.W.A. was the major women's organisation which had the greatest influence amongst rural women (especially in isolated areas). This was a period when broad based communications were mainly by radio, women orientated magazines and the telephone. The CWA was an organisation that catered exclusively to women's needs. The atmosphere was one of "sisterhood" and covered nearly all the needs of rural based women. This one organisation incorporated knowledge and learning targeting women who physically may be isolated but not mentally. The C.W.A. motto "Honour our God, Loyalty to the throne, Service to the country, Through country women, For country women, By country women."The Kiewa Valley Group of the C.W.A. was a focal point for women in this still relatively isolated rural region to have a place of refuge from the heavy domestic demands that family and business exerted, and the need of a time and space to gain all the mental relaxation and group bonding necessary to balance the sometimes harsh environment that rural life presented.Silver plated chalice trophy has two "block ear" type handles fastened at the top lip and going 40mm vertically down to reconnect with the bowl. The bowl is connected to the dark brown plastic base by a brass (silver plating has worn off) stem (flower vase shaped).the chalice stem is attached to a circular tapered dome 30mm high which is also silver plated. The plastic base has a 35mm high extension rising from the broader circular bottom section and is rectangular in shape except for the quarter circular indent at each corner. The final circular base provides the chalice with the stability to stand on a flat surface. The whole of the base is hollow allowing the stem fastening nut to be viewed. The inscription on the chalice has been carefully and professionally scribed into the metal. "*C W A* KIEWA VALLEY GROUP H & H.I. Petticoat Child
This petticoat is demonstrative of home made infant undergarment clothing in the early 1900. Distance to and from commercial haberdashery store was too far to fit out young girls especially if the are undergarments. Mothers and other family members had the seamstress talent to make clothes that are not in full view of anyoneHistorically these undergarments have no fashion relevance for the younger fashion scene and this garment is an example of the self sufficient supply of home made articles. This was especially so within the Kiewa Valley and surrounds. Fashion in Australia and more so in areas with little or no access to overseas or city merchandise lacked "modern fashionable" clothes e.g. the latest from England and Paris. This region was and still is a rural backdrop of clothes that fit into the type of life and work of the society it holds.Cotton petticoat, white, three buttons on top back, 8mm wide straps of cotton tape. Gathered skirt with triple row of Rick Rack on the bottom edge and three pintucks, 17mm wide, on the lower edge of skirt. Photograph, View from Goodwood Street, Surrey Hills in 1930, 1930
The Breeden family came to Surrey Hills in 1905, first to Guildford Road, then Middlesex Road where Horrie Breeden lived as a boy. He sometimes used to help with milking at the adjoining Kenneally's dairy in Highfield Road. Sometimes he and his brother drove the cows from there to Schneider's property near Florence Road on the way to Surrey Hills Primary School. The cows would graze here until the boys took them back after school. At other times he would deliver milk from the Croydon Road dairy (Isherwood's or Bovill's) to St Joseph's Boys Home before school. Horrie became an apprentice in woodwork / carpentry at Vine's timber yard before serving in World War 1. Horrie's father died in 1919 and in the same year he bought 3 cows and established his own dairy on his mother's property on the corner of Goodwood Street and Boisdale Road. In the 1920s Horrie built the first house in Goodwood Street. He went on to build others in the street including his own at No 7 Goodwood Street. He did all the joinery and internal fittings for this. [REF: Oral testimony: Horrie Breeden to Jocelyn Hall in 1979.] In the 1990s the owner of 7 Goodwood Street discovered a branding iron under the house; this is presumed to relate to Horrie Breeden's dairy. It was donated to SHNC's collection. Horrace Bruce Breeden (7 July 1898-24 January 1988) was son of Charles Henry Breeden and Lavinia Maria Darby, both born Warwickshire; buried in Box Hill Cemetery. He was one of a large family. He married Olive Mary Romey.Black and white photo taken from the east end of Goodwood Street, Surrey Hills in 1930, looking towards Elgar and Riversdale Roads. It shows an area which is rural in appearance. It is not built upon. The foreground is grassy and there is a post-and-wire fence to the right. Photograph postcard, St. Helena church; postcard dated December 1907
This is an early view of the historical church and precinct. Statement of Significance Last updated on - October 10, 2005 St Helena's is a rare surviving example of a churchyard cemetery. It is of local historical significance because of its association with the local pioneering family, the Beales, and other notable citizens including Walter Withers and Graham Webster. The cemetery is also the oldest in the municipality, of State significance. The high level of maintenance and the rural ambience contribute to the overall significance of the site. St Katherine's Church building has been reconstructed and is of local historical interest, principally for its value in interpreting the original setting within the Cemetery. It contains stained glass windows of local historical significance, commemorating casualties of the Beale family in World War One. - Victorian Heritage DatabaseDigital file only Postcards scanned from the collection of Michael Aitken on loan to EDHS, 13 Feb 2018michael aitken collection, postcards, st helena, st katherine's church -

Film - Video (VHS), Phil Burke et al, Shire of Eltham Grants Commsission Submission (Series 69, Item 7), 1993
Shire of Eltham Archives: Series 69, Item 7 Opens with aerial views of the Shire, 85% of the shire covered by the Green wedge principal. Discusses the obligations required of the Shire to maintain the Green Wedge. The Shire covers over 27,000 hectares with a population in excess of 45,000 residents, more than 70% living in the southern 10% of the Shire in suburbs of Eltham, Montmorency, Lower Plenty and Research. 85% of the Shire in the more sparsely populated northern area which is covered by the Green Wedge. Council is committed to providing a parity of services to all residents such as garbage collection and maintenance of roads. Views of rubbish collection trucks in Montmorency. It is emphasised that the cost of these services in highly populated areas is relatively low whereas in the sparsely populated Green Wedge areas, considerable. There are hundreds of kilometres of roads throughout the Shire, many unmade and maintenance is high to check overhanging trees and erosion especially on the steep hills is expensive and disproportionate to servicing the population in the dense urban areas. Shows views of hilly gravel roads and graders at work maintaining them. Shows scenes of assessing planning applications in these rural areas which takes significantly more time as well as other services provided such as Meals on Wheels, building permits, Ranger services. Provision of recreational facilities in hilly areas requires the acquisition of expensive river flats (views of cricket ground surrounded by hills) and where not possible, costly earthmoving required. Also, views highlighting extensive tracks of natural habitat home to significant bird, animal and plant life. Shire emphasises its commitment highlighted by the Eltham Copper Butterfly which the Shire maintains small pockets of bushland to ensure its survival at significant expense (views of Pauline Toner Copper Butterfly Reserve.) Short interview with Pat Vaughan, Environmental Officer for the Shire discussing the Eltham Copper Butterfly who also mentions many other species in the Shire of high significance from bats to mammals to plants as well as the importance of the Green Wedge to Melbourne – the lungs of Melbourne - and ensuring the protection of very important habitat which requires a great deal of planning and management to look after. Views of Wingrove Park to emphasise this maintenance by machinery in some areas is too damaging and introduced species, etc must be removed by hand. Balancing the services and facilities expected by the community with the needs of the environment requires careful planning demands requires careful planning and the principals of the Green Wedge require constant attention in the face of growing need for housing. Director of Planning & Environment, Richard Allen advises there are approximately 1,300 planning permits and development applications each year ranging from simple subdivision, boundary realignments to further complicated non-urban developments for agricultural pursuits and the level of expertise required from architectural and engineering to land degradation, flora and fauna. Certificate, Rotary Club of Eltham, Certificate, Festival Parade Award, Rotary Club of Eltham, Eighth Eltham Community Festival 1982, 1982
Eltham Community Festival awards. Awarded to the Shire of Eltham Historical Society for the most effort by locals. Newsletter No. 27, November 1982 ELTHAM COMMUNITY FESTIVAL Although our parade entry did not win a prize this year, it was considered highly successful from a participation point of view. Despite some uncertainty as to just who was corning, members and friends kept appearing at the assembly area . As in the past years our friends from the Victorian Folk Music·Club brought their instruments along and really added to the occasion. This year we concentrated on a rural theme with a tractor/trailer combination. Thanks to Peter Bassett-Smith for the tractor, Joh Ebeli for the decorations and friendly trailer owner Dennis McKay. Unfortunately the closing stages of the parade were marred by heavy rain. We just finished as the rain started but members scattered very quickly. This has prompted the suggestion for future parades that we have a tent or other suitable venue for members to gather after the event. This is worth following up. The cold driving rain provided a special problem for Peter in driving his tractor home to Kangaroo Ground. Have you ever had to choose between standing up to warm your hands on the exhaust and having your tractor seat flooded? Booklet - Folder, 2020 Vision: a preferred future, 1984
Following council amalgamations, a series of community consultations were undertaken in 1995 to inform the development of a cohesive vision for the newly formed Shire of Nillumbik. A response to the new conditions which people of the Eltham/Diamond Creek/Greensborough and surrounding rural areas found themselves in as a result of the decision by the Victorian Government to amalgamate local governments into larger entities. The case for these reforms was strong, but the amalgamation process did disrupt some people's lives. The need to bring together the people within the new boundaries of Nillumbik was recognised by the Commissioners and the Chief Executive Officer of the Shire, who felt that a good way to begin was to develop a future vision for the Shire. It was decided that the people of the Shire should be asked what they wanted their future to be and a process of consultation was established through which people could express their views. Contents: Part One: Introduction, Nillumbik 1995 -what we thought, Nillumbik - thinking the future, Creatng a Nillumbik Community, Nillumbik's assets, Goals for Nillumbik 2020. Owned at the time by architect, Ian Jelbart, the property had been in the Jelbart family since the 1940s; a 5560sqm secluded hilltop parcel in Eltham. When the manor house and its barn were built, Eltham was a rural community; Jelbart’s grandfather Ronald was a businessman whose poultry farm formed part of the family’s original 100ha holding. A portion would later be subdivided into residential lots to make way for new homes that would form the basis of the Woodridge Estate in the early 1970s.
