Photograph of Foundation stone for Ringwood State School No. 2997 was laid by Mrs. J.K. Turnbull on 15th August, 1889, marking the opening of the school situated in Whitehorse Road at the corner of Ringwood Street (1889-1922). Mrs. Turnbull was the wife of the Ringwood Station Master. The stone was removed after the school closed in 1922 and re-laid in 1962 by the School Committee at this subsequent Greenwood Avenue school site and is pictured here being viewed near the entrance in 1973 by Mr. Ron Pullin, Archivist, Ringwood Historical Research Group".Sign below photograph reads, "Foundation stone of Ringwood State School (late Ringwood St.). Now in grounds of Greenwood Avenue Ringwood State School". Inscription on stone, "This foundation stone was laid by Mrs. J.K. Turnbull on 15th August 1889". Printed on plaque below stone, "No.2997 - Ringwood State School 1889-1922. Situated in Ringwood Street, East Side sixty yards north of Maroondah Highway. Foundation stone removed 19?? re-erected by the School Committee 1962".

The school was built to educate the increasing number of children of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme population. The school opened in 1948 in the Recreation hall and in the new building (photo) in 1950. A new wing was built in 1951 and became the Mt Beauty Higher Elementary School in 1953. By 1958 it had 617 pupils.Mr George Redfern was the Head Teacher for one year in 1951.Large black and white photo framed in thick wood and backed with cream cardboard. Donald Clark Collection.Two letters relating to a proposal to close various schools in the region around Tarnagulla and to create a consolidated school at Newbridge. The first (.1), dated 02/12/1947, is from the Education Department to the Newbridge School Committee asking for it to produce a report on the views of parents in the related schools which are listed. The second (.2), dated 17/01/1949, is from the Education Department to the Newbridge School Committee thanking it for compiling the report and acknowledging there was insufficient support for the proposal. schools, education

Although opened by the Church of England in 1857, Huntly was not recognised as beginning until 1860 when it began to receive government funding. In 1862 it became known as a Common School. In the 1870's it was partly destroyed in a wind storm and a brick building was built to replace it. It became a State School between 1873 and 1878 and was renamed Huntly Primary School in 1970.'Huntly State School No 306, Centenary 11th June, 1960, 1860 - 1960', on front cover. The photograph was taken at the ANA Hall & depicts the Headmaster, past students & parents who organised a very successful 'Back to School" weekend for the centenary.This photograph is a valuable record of the principal citizens of Harcourt, post WW2, given leadership by H Larter, the school headmaster, and C H James, a returned soldier/orchard supervisor turned /historian.
