This leaflet lists five pieces of embroidery made by the South Western Branch of the Embroiderers Guild of Victoria and presented to the City of Warrnambool, one piece made for Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, one piece containing the names of 170 members of the branch and one piece made for the Jones Foundation. The South Western Group of the Embroiderers Guild of Victoria was formed in Warrnambool in 1974. The foundation stone of the Scots Church Ellerslie was laid by Mrs Jemima Vans Robertson on 1st November 1870. She was the leader and benefactor of the church. Worship services were held in the church for the next 145 years. The Sunday School was started in1871 and until 1977 Ellerslie was part of the Framlingham Presbyterian Charge. The PFA for young people was very active in the 1950s and 60s. Since 1977 the Ellerslie church has been part of the Uniting Church in Australia and was an integral part of the Mortlake Parish. The church closed in 2014 and marked for sale. This program is of some interest as it gives us a short history of Scots Church in Ellerslie and tells of its closure in 2014. This book bears the names of Linda Mathieson and Nullawarre State School. The Mathieson families were early settlers in the Warrnambool area at Woodford and Purnim and later in the Nullawarre district. Nullawarre State School was opened in 1875 with members of the Mathieson family being foundation pupils. It still operates today.This book is of interest because of its connection to the Mathieson families of Nullawarre and to Nullawarre State School.This is a hard cover book of 92 pages. It contains many short articles, over 80 illustrations and advertisements at the back of the book for other books published by T. Nelson and Sons. Some of the illustrations have been hand-coloured. This is an illustrated history of New Zealand. Since the foundation of Warrnambool in 1847 up to the present day there has been regular and important contact between the people of Warrnambool and New Zealand. In the 19th and early 20th centuries many people in Warrnambool moved either temporarily or permanently to New Zealand for marriage or economic reasons. Some residents of Warrnambool and district were involved in the Maori Wars and there was regular shipping between the two places with much timber imported from New Zealand, especially for the McGennan butter box factory and for building purposes (e.g. St. Joseph’s Church). The builder of theWarrnambool Breakwater, Arthur Dudley Dobson, came to Warrnambool after having practised his surveying and engineering skills in New Zealand (South Island – Trans Alpine Railway etc). This book is very useful for research into the Warrnambool/New Zealand connection, especially in the 19th century. There is information in this book on Arthur Dudley Dobson who was important in the history of both Warrnambool and New Zealand. This is a hard cover book of 488 pages. This book was given in 1928 as a prize by the Dennington Presbyterian Sabbath (Sunday) School to Clive Cust. The Dennington Presbyterian Church was originally established in Drummond Street in 1918. In 1951 it was moved to Lindsay Street and demolished in 1968. The Cust families have been prominent in Warrnambool’s history since its foundation days. Clive Cyril Cust was born in Warrnambool in 1914 to Alex and Annie Cust. This book is of minor interest as an example of the type of book given to a teenage boy as a Sunday School prize in 1928. It is also of interest because of its connection to a member of the Cust family. This is a hard cover book of 216 pages. It has a brown cover with black lettering and ornamental borders on the front cover and spine and a coloured sketch of several military men on horseback on the front cover. The same coloured sketch forms the frontispiece and there are three other black and white sketches scattered throughout the text. Joseph Wilder, a professional photographer, came to Warrnambool in 1860 and took a series of photographs, two of which survive today. One was of the local Volunteer Corps and the other was a series of photographs taken from Cannon Hill showing Merri Street and the town and buildings beyond. It seems that copies of these last-mentioned photographs were framed to produce a large panoramic view of 1860 Warrnambool and one of these was given to the old Warrnambool Museum in the 1880s by James Astley Bromfield. He had established a chemist’s shop in Warrnambool in 1854 and showed his interest in the history of the young town by producing a map in 1856 showing the first landowners, a seminal resource today for historians. He again demonstrated this interest when he included the names of the people and places in the 1860 photograph he gave to the museum in the 1880s. The frame fragment was found amongst the collection of items from the old Museum at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and brought to the Historical Society to accompany the original series of photographs. Bromfield went to live in Melbourne in the 1880s. It is presumed that the plastic cover has been placed on the frame fragment at a much later date than the 1880s.This frame fragment is interesting and very important for several reasons:- 1. It is one demonstration of the interest that James Astley Bromfield had in local history 2. It came from the old Warrnambool Museum and shows how that institution kept items of historical interest 3. It gives us the names of the people and places in the Joseph Wilder photographs of 1860 that placed together form a panorama that reveals what a major section of Warrnambool looked like only 13 years after its foundation. The list enables us to correctly identify the early places and people and so is invaluable for research purposes 4. It links a Museum exhibit of the 1880s with the original 1860 photographs which are held by the Historical Society This is a piece of wood broken from a frame containing a photograph. It has jagged edges. It contains the list of people and places depicted in the Joseph Wilder panorama photograph of Warrnambool in 1860. This is a 1991 program for the City of Warrnambool Eisteddfod. This Eisteddfod was first held in 1975 when the Rotary Club of Warrnambool organized a community festival attracting 150 entrants. Following this the Warrnambool City Council became the organizer of this event. Today the Warrnambool Eisteddfod is dedicated to showcasing local talents in speech, drama, music, dance, calisthenics and debating in an annual event that goes over 40 days and has over 1000 entrants. A highlight is the Aria Award for the best senior vocalist. This program is of some interest as it gives details of the events held in the Warrnambool Eisteddfod in 1991. This is a booklet of 84 pages. It has a blue and white cover and printed material. This includes office bearers of the Eisteddfod, advertisements, a program of events with the names of entrants, a list of sponsors and some annotated pages indicating the winning entrants. These framed tourist maps came from the Lane Foundation so it is presumed that they were from the office of Lane’s Travel Service which operated from 205 Raglan Parade Warrnambool with the known dates, the 1950s and 1960s. The proprietor, Alan Lane, was a successful Warrnambool businessman who operated a Warrnambool and district bus service as well as his travel business. He was heavily involved in local community affairs being a Warrnambool Councillor for 18 years from 1952 to 1970 and President of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce for six years. He was a major donor to the Warrnambool Performing Arts Centre, the Warrnambool Art Gallery and the St. John of God Hospital and left the bulk of his estate to the Alan Lane Foundation which has contributed millions of dollars to local organizations and programs. Alan Lane died in 1995. These framed maps are of some interest as examples of the tourism maps used to promote the city and district in the 1950s and 60s. This is a tourist map of the Warrnambool C.B.D. and adjoining streets produced as an advertisement for Olympic Tyres. It is multi-coloured and has cartoon sketches of the main tourist attractions and pointers to attractions outside of the main city area. It includes an inset black and white photograph of the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens and an advertisement for Olympic Tyres. It is printed on a white background and is enclosed behind glass in a wooden frame of a light brown colour. This was a retail, wholesale and manufacturing business. In 1891 Kennedy erected a new building which was described as one of the most elegant and best-stocked chemist’s shops in Victoria. Kennedy was active in Warrnambool community affairs and was a foundation member of the Warrnambool Bowls Club, being its first Vice-President and an early President. The pharmacy business continued after Kennedy’s death, trading as R.F.Kennedy and Co. Richard Frank Kennedy was one of the most significant businessmen in Warrnambool in the late 19th century. The products of his chemist shop and factory were distributed all over Victoria and beyond. This bottle is retained as an example of the smaller-sized bottles used in the Kennedy pharmacy. This is a clear glass bottle with a rectangular-shaped body with rounded edges, a circular-shaped neck and a moulded top and opening. The top is slightly chipped. There is no stopper. This booklet was produced for the Diamond Jubilee of Christ Church, Warrnambool in 1910. The Anglican Church was established in Warrnambool in 1850 with the arrival of the first minister, the Rev. Peter Beamish. He served in the Warrnambool district until 1895. The foundation stone of Christ Church was laid in 1855 and the church was consecrated in 1862. A tower was erected in 1881. At the time of the Diamond Jubilee the Anglican Minister in Warrnambool was Archdeacon Peacock. This booklet is of interest because it is a memento of the 1910 Diamond Jubilee celebrations at Christ Church, Warrnambool. This is a soft cover booklet of 24 pages. The cover is brownish orange in colour with a sepia image of Christ Church, Warrnambool on the front with gold lettering within an ornate border in sepia tonings. The booklet contains several black and white photographs, the programme of events for the Diamond Jubilee in 1910 and historical information on the church and its ministers. The printed material in the booklet is contained within a red-lined border. The booklet has been stapled but the staples have been removed. In October 1947 construction was commenced on the erection of the workmen's camp at Rocky Valley. Also in 1947 construction of a stream diversion was commenced to allow excavation to commence for the dam wall. In the summer of 1948/49, stripping of the foundation area on both sides of the river was carried out. Weather conditions were not always favourable during the construction, particularly 1955/56 summer, and work would have to cease each year for the winter season due to the severe conditions. The dam is a earth and rock fill structure with a height of about 30.5 metres and crest length 518.16 metres and was completed in March, 1959.These photographs show the type of terrain in the area prior to the construction and filling of Rocky Valley Dam. Also of interest is the type of accommodation provided for those working on the construction and the early cranes available in the 1940/50's. The construction of Clover Power Station was commenced in October 1942 and the power station building was completed in May, 1943. The first machine was placed in service August, 1944 and the second machine in May, 1945. The water discharges directly into Clover Dam and re-used in West Kiewa Station. This cookbook was produced by the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums, partly as a fund-raiser and partly as a promotional exercise. A Pipe Band was formed in Warrnambool in 1906 with twelve foundation members. Simon Fraser was the original Pipe Major and the band has had some changes of name since its foundation. The band was not operating for some time during the years of World War One and again during World War Two but today under the name of Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums it performs at concerts, dinners, band competitions, official functions, street parades etc and has won both Victorian and interstate Championship titles.
