For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. In 1995 a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. President Luscombe laid a wreath at the Lone pine tree. A photo of the official party at the planting of the Olive Tree of Peace in the Western Lawn of the Shrine of Remembrance in 1973. Although the back of the photo says "Planting of Lone Pine tree" it is believed that it is wrong and this photo belongs with the Olive Tree of Peace photos (see 00478 and 00479). 1973 was the Golden Jubilee year of Legacy. The names on the front of the photo mentions Sir Edmund Herring who was Lieutenant General of Victoria for 27 years, which is deputy to the Governor, so he was probably acting on behalf of the Governor at the ceremony. Herring was a renowned Australian senior officer in World War II. In September 1942 he became commander of New Guinea Force. He also served in World War I, earning the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Cross. Lone Pine, so named after a single Turkish pine on the battlefield was part of a diversionary attack to draw Turkish troops away from the main assaults elsewhere. The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contained articles on the Queenscliff camp, Anzac Student ceremony, Glenelg River canoe journey, donation in memory of Private Greg Sher, and Widows' High Tea. Also the history of the Battle of Lone Pine and the Lone Pine trees grown in Australia since. An article from the Bulletin about Legatee Frank Doolan speaking about the origins of the Lone Pine Project which was the subject of a short paper presented by Melbourne Legacy to the Perth conference. In the speech he talks about the role the 24th Battalion in the evacuation of Gallipoli. "the 24th Battalion mounted the gallant rearguard of 33 men who at the evacuation were left behind to keep up the pretence that the Lone Pine Trenches were still occupied. They destroyed the remaining guns, and embarked before daylight twenty minutes before the appointed time, and less than two hours before a storm blew up which would have made withdrawal impossible. Amongst those named in the history of the Lone Pine campaign on Gallipoli were: Lieut. S G Savige, Lieut. H C Brinsmead, Lieut John Anderson, R.Q.M.S. Frank Selleck - all of whom were foundation members of Melbourne Legacy. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. A chart for taking measurements of the Legacy boys. This was a copy of the form that was kept as an example. The data was of measurements of junior legatee W. Gallagher. The form was signed J. Teirney, which was Jim Teirney who was the first paid employee of Melbourne Legacy, he was the fitness instructor for many years. The date was 1927 so very early in the history of Legacy working with children of deceased servicemen.
