Book, Fragmenta Phytographiae Australiae Vol 6
This item is from the ‘Pattison Collection’, a collection of books and records that was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute, which was founded in Warrnambool in 1853. By 1886 the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute (WMI) had grown to have a Library, Museum and Fine Arts Gallery, with a collection of “… choice productions of art, and valuable specimens in almost every branch and many wonderful national curiosities are now to be seen there, including historic relics of the town and district.” It later included a School of Design. Although it was very well patronised, the lack of financial support led the WMI in 1911 to ask the City Council to take it over. In 1935 Ralph Pattison was appointed as City Librarian to establish and organise the Warrnambool Library as it was then called. When the WMI building was pulled down in 1963 a new civic building was erected on the site and the new Warrnambool Library, on behalf of the City Council, took over all the holdings of the WMI. At this time some of the items were separated and identified as the ‘Pattison Collection’, named after Ralph Pattison. Eventually the components of the WMI were distributed from the Warrnambool Library to various places, including the Art Gallery, Historical Society and Flagstaff Hill. Later some were even distributed to other regional branches of Corangamite Regional Library and passed to and fro. It is difficult now to trace just where all of the items have ended up. The books at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village generally display stamps and markings from Pattison as well as a variety of other institutions including the Mechanics’ Institute itself. RALPH ERIC PATTISON Ralph Eric Pattison was born in Rockhampton, Queensland, in 1891. He married Maude Swan from Warrnambool in 1920 and they set up home in Warrnambool. In 1935 Pattison accepted a position as City Librarian for the Warrnambool City Council. His huge challenge was to make a functional library within two rooms of the Mechanics’ Institute. He tirelessly cleaned, cleared and sorted a disarrayed collection of old books, jars of preserved specimens and other items reserved for exhibition in the city’s museum. He developed and updated the library with a wide variety of books for all tastes, including reference books for students; a difficult task to fulfil during the years following the Depression. He converted all of the lower area of the building into a library, reference room and reading room for members and the public. The books were sorted and stored using a cataloguing and card index system that he had developed himself. He also prepared the upper floor of the building and established the Art Gallery and later the Museum, a place to exhibit the many old relics that had been stored for years for this purpose. One of the treasures he found was a beautiful ancient clock, which he repaired, restored and enjoyed using in his office during the years of his service there. Ralph Pattison was described as “a meticulous gentleman whose punctuality, floorless courtesy and distinctive neat dress were hallmarks of his character, and ‘his’ clock controlled his daily routine, and his opening and closing of the library’s large heavy doors to the minute.” Pattison took leave during 1942 to 1942 to serve in the Royal Australian Navy, Volunteer Reserve as Lieutenant. A few years later he converted one of the Museum’s rooms into a Children’s Library, stocking it with suitable books for the younger generation. This was an instant success. In the 1950’s he had the honour of being appointed to the Victorian Library Board and received more inspiration from the monthly conferences in Melbourne. He was sadly retired in 1959 after over 23 years of service, due to the fact that he had gone over the working age of council officers. However he continued to take a very keen interest in the continual development of the Library until his death in 1969. The Pattison Collection, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute Collection is primarily significant in its totality, rather than for the individual objects it contains. Its contents are highly representative of the development of Mechanics' Institute libraries across Australia, particularly Victoria. A diversity of publications and themes has been amassed, and these provide clues to our understanding of the nature of and changes in the reading habits of Victorians from the 1850s to the middle of the 20th century. The collection also highlights the Warrnambool community’s commitment to the Mechanics’ Institute, reading, literacy and learning in the regions, and proves that access to knowledge was not impeded by distance. These items help to provide a more complete picture of our community’s ideals and aspirations. The Warrnambool Mechanics Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and the important role it played in the intellectual, cultural and social development of people throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s publication collection is of both local and state significance. Souvenir, Victoria Fine China, Miniature mug Warrnambool Thunder Point, C 1940
Warrnambool has been an attraction for tourists for over 100 years. It has been popular as a coastal resort and today the winter whale season brings more tourists. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Warrnambool was promoted as a spa and health resort, partly because of its hot and cold sea water baths and partly because of its bracing climate and attractive coastline. Thunder Point, depicted on this item, has been a popular visiting spot for tourists for many years. Buying a high quality ornament such as this one was a popular activity of tourists in the mid 20th century. Tourists today buy souvenir items but the choice and range vary from what was available 80 years ago. This item is retained as an example of a local souvenir bought by tourists in the mid 20th century. This is a small white china mug with a gilt edging or strip around the top opening rim, the base and the handle. There is a colour image of a seascape in blue, yellow and black on the side of the mug and the maker’s name on the base.‘Victoria Fine China’tourism in warrnambool, souvenir china items 20th century, history of warrnambool -

Ithaca along with other Ionian Islands experienced catastrophic earthquakes in 1953 resulting in widespread devastation across the island. After the damage was assessed many of the island's residents emigrated to join family in Australia, which brought about another wave of Ithacan migration. The damage on Ithaca as a result of the earthquake caused the largest ever wave of immigration from the island which resulted in the most significant decline in the island's population.A black and white photograph showing the damage caused by the earthquake which occurred across the Ionian Islands in 1953. Functional object - Bookmark, Thomas Stevens, Coventry and London, Mizpah, late 19th century
This bookmark was found loose inside one of our antiquarian books and no connection to the book or its unknown original owner have been found. The word Mizpah means Watchtower in Hebrew and a Mizpah card or bookmark was sent or given to Jewish people who were separated from their loved ones, with the message that the Lord was watching over those absent. The bookmark has been made by the firm of Thomas Stevens of Coventry. This city was the English centre of ribbon weaving in the 19th century and Thomas Stevens, a local weaver, invented and developed in the 1860s the art of making woven silk items - book marks, greeting cards, art works etc. These were called Stevengraphs. Stevens opened a factory in London in 1878 and by the 1880s was producing over 900 woven silk designs. Stevengraphs are a collectors' Items today and this Mizpah bookmark is a fine example of one. This is a woven silk bookmark with multi-coloured patterns. coloured script and a sprig of flowers, probably fuchsias, all on a yellow background. There is a red tassel at the end of the bookmark. The bookmark was affixed to a rectangular sheet of paper containing details of the maker but the bookmark is now detached. The backing sheet is partly torn.Mizpah The Lord watch between Me and thee when we are Absent one from anotherreligious book marks, stevengraphs -

This journal has been used by the Warrnambool doctor, Irving Buzzard to record his surgical operations and procedures from 1931 to 1944. Dr Irving Buzzard (1897-1981) was one of Warrnambool's best-known doctors, especially in the field of gynaecology and obstetrics. He came to Warrnambool in 1929 with his practice at Cambourne in Raglan Parade. He left Warrnambool in 1964. Whilst in Warrnambool he was active in medical associations and local community affairs. The Irving Buzzard Midwifery prize is awarded annually by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (Victorian branch). This journal is of considerable significance as it gives an insight into the work of a general medical practitioner in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century (For instance, the journal records that in 1931 Dr Buzzard carried out 38 major operations and 132 minor procedures.)This is a ledger of 193 pages with a hardboard black cover and the remains of brown leather binding on the spine and cover corners. This tin of boot polish was a product sold be Cramond and Dickson store, which traded in Warrnambool from 1855 - 1974.. John Glass Cramond and James Dickson migrated from Scotland to Melbourne where they opened a Cramond and Dickson store in St Kilda. They were inspired by the growth in Warrnambool after a visit and opened a second store there in 1855. The Cramond and Dickson store, grocers – drapery – ironmongery - chemist, was located on the corner of Liebig and Timor Streets, Warrnambool (now the site of a Mexican restaurant). Both Cramond and Dickson were involved in the business and social aspects of Warrnambool’s community. Cramond and Dickson closed in 1974. An advertisement placed by Cramond and Dickson in The Camperdown Chronicle, Saturday 6th April 1895, states them “showing the latest novelties for the coming winter season” … “import directly from English and Continental manufacturers” … “representatives in London … always in touch with the Newest Continental Fashions” ... “having been established for so many years we know the requirements of the Western District”… “allow 5 percent discount on goods paid for at the time of purchase”. Document, Newsletter St John's church Warrnambool, 1895
St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool was opened in 1875 with the Minister in 1895 being the Rev. W. Gray Dixon. At this time the Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavour was active and there was great enthusiasm for supporting missionary work in China and India. This newsletter is of considerable importance as it is an original document and describes the activities of the Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool in the 1890s and gives us some idea of the character of the church at the time. It includes information on Fred Newcombe who later died in India while working as a medical missionary and the names of many people who made their mark in our history. This is a white four-page printed newsletter - St. John’s Quarterly Record, No. 21, Warrnambool, April, 1895. The front page contains an image of St. John’s Church. The printed material includes Church Notes, Marriages, Funerals, Church Register and Disjunctions from Membership. Dish, Souvenir Dish, Mid 20th century
This item is one that was sold to tourists in Warrnambool in the mid to late 20th century. The dish has been mass produced in England and the image of Shelly Beach in Warrnambool added later, probably in Australia. As it is a Royal Stafford china piece it would have been a relatively costly item. It could have been bought for use in the buyer’s home or as a present for another person. Souvenir dishes such as this one have been popular souvenir items for tourists for over 100 years. Warrnambool, as a coastal location, has always been a tourist town and it remains today an important industry for the city. This dish is of interest as an example of the items sold to tourists in the mid 20th century. It will be useful for display. This is an oval-shaped china dish with fluted sides and a fluted edge and gold paint around the edge. The gold edging is partly worn off. The dish is white with a multi-coloured image set into the base of the dish. There is a crack on one side of the dish. On the base of the dish is a crown symbol and details of the manufacturer. ‘Shelly Beach, Warrnambool, Victoria’ “Royal Stafford China Made in England” tourism in warrnambool, history of warrnambool -

Document, Grasmere Church Dispute, 1882
These papers contain cuttings newspaper articles from the Standard of 1882 and handwritten comments appended to these cuttings. They refer to a dispute in 1882 regarding the ownership of the church in Grasmere to which the Anglican Church was claiming ownership The author of the handwritten comments is unknown but the comments purport to be a more accurate account of events than what appears in the paper cuttings. Grasmere is a small settlement 10 kilometres north of Warrnambool. In the 1850s land in Grasmere was donated for educational purposes and a Government-subsidized school which was a Denominational School run by the Church of England was established in 1858. This school was closed when Government State Schools were established after 1872 and the Anglican Church dismantled the old school and built a church on the site in the late 1870s. This church was erected by public subscription and many of the subscribers apparently believed they were donating to a building that could be used by any local Protestant churchgoers. The church in 1882 was being used by the Presbyterian Church for its services. A public meeting was held in 1882 to try to resolve the dispute between the Anglican Church claim and the local residents’ claim that the site belonged to the local community. Apparently the dispute remained unresolved and the Grasmere Anglican Church continued to operate until the early 20th century. This document is of interest as it is associated with a dispute that took place in Grasmere in 1882 and gives some indication of the arguments that were presented at the time in favour of, or opposed to, the Anglican Church’s claim to the ownership of the church. It is a document of particular interest to the history of the Grasmere. This is a folder of eleven foolscap-size sheets of paper enclosed in a mottle-coloured cardboard cover. The front cover is creased and partly torn and the back cover is detached and is in two pieces. The pages have been stitched together with thread and contain paste-in newspaper cuttings and handwritten material in purple ink. Grasmere Anglican Church -

Booklet, The story of the red cross, 1940s
This book published by the Australian Red Cross Society has been written by Joan and Daryl Lindsay. The book features the work of many Australian artists in the 1940s. The inscription shows that the book was a prize awarded to Joyce Goodall, a pupil at Warrnambool Technical School. This school commenced in 1913 in Timor Street, Warrnambool, a site now occupied by T.A.F.E. Warrnambool Technical School moved to a Caramut Road site and is now called Brauer College. The book was the James Swan Memorial Prize. Swan had a furniture business in Warrnambool. He was a City Councillor (1922-1936) and Mayor (1926-1928) and Swan Reserve in Raglan Parade is named after him. The donor of the prize, Mrs R. Pattison, was the daughter of James Swan and the wife of Ralph Pattison, Warrnambool Librarian. The winner of the prize, Joyce Goodall (Mrs Joyce Milne) was a member of the Goodall families which have been in the Warrnambool and Mortlake areas since the 1860s. John King was the first Head Teacher of Warrnambool Technical School and remained in that position for 29 years. This book is of interest as all of the names mentioned in the inscription plate in this book have a place in Warrnambool’s history. This is a hard cover book with the pages unnumbered. The cover is yellow with black lettering and the front cover has an emblem of the Red Cross and a laurel wreath in red and black. The cover is partly torn and has been mended with adhesive tape. The contents of the book are largely pictorial and illustrative with some text. The inscription is typed. ‘Warrnambool Technical School, Labor to Efficiency, 9th Dec. 1942, for Proficiency in English, James Swan Memorial Prize, donated by Mrs R. Bottle, F W Bloore, Early 20th century
This bottle was used in the pharmacy of the Warrnambool chemist Francis Bloore. It contained a mixture made up for Archdeacon Thomas Bennett who was the Anglican Vicar of Christ Church, Warrnambool from 1912 to 1915. As Captain Bennett he was the chaplain of the 22nd Battalion in World War One from 1915 to 1917. He became Archdeacon of Warrnambool in 1917 and held this position until 1937. He spent much time on his return assisting returned World War One soldiers and their kin in the Warrnambool area. He was the first President of the Warrnambool Returned Soldiers League. Francis Bloore, born in Ballarat in 1874, came to Warrnambool about 1912. In 1914 he leased a newly-built shop at the corner of Liebig Street and Raglan Parade and continued on the business until the late 1930s. This bottle is of great interest as it is one of the few items we have in our collection associated with the pharmacy business of Francis Bloore. The bottle is also associated with an important Warrnambool Anglican Church identity, Archdeacon Bennett. This is a glass bottle with a rectangular-shaped body with rounded edges, a circular-shaped neck and a circular moulded top with an opening. It has a cork stopper. The top of the bottle is chipped. The label on the front of the bottle is partly torn away and very stained with most of the handwriting and some of the printing indecipherable. The inside of the bottle is discoloured. ‘The Mixture …. tablespoonful with water every three hours - Archdn Bennett’ ‘Shake the Bottle’ ‘F.W.
